King George VI delivers his last Christmas Message on 25 December 1951.

As I speak to you today I would like to wish you, wherever you may be, a happy Christmas. Though we live in hard and critical times Christmas is, and always will be, a time when we can and should count our blessings - the blessings of home, the blessings of happy family gatherings, and the blessing of the hopeful message of Christmas.
I myself have every cause for deep thankfulness, for not only - by the grace of God and through the faithful skill of my doctors, surgeons and nurses - have I come through my illness, but I have learned once again that it is in bad times that we value most highly the support and sympathy of our friends. From my peoples in these islands and in the British Commonwealth and Empire as well as from many other countries this support and sympathy has reached me and I thank you now from my heart. I trust that you yourselves realise how greatly your prayers and good wishes have helped and are helping me in my recovery.
It has been a great disappointment to the Queen and myself that we have been compelled to give up for the second time the tour which we had planned for next year. We were looking forward to meeting my peoples in their own homes and we realise that they will share our regret that this cannot be. I am very glad that our daughter, Princess Elizabeth with her husband will be able to visit these countries and I know that their welcome there will be as warm as that which awaited us.
You are most of you now sitting at home among your families, listening to me as I speak from mine. At Christmas we feel that the old simple things matter most. They do not change however much the world outside may seem to do so.
When we say that Christmas brings good cheer we do not only think of material things, we think more of the feelings of friendliness and comradeship we have one for the other; and I think that, among all the blessings which we may count today, the chief one is that we are a friendly people. We do not all think alike, of course. We are such a large family of nations that this would be difficult. We each have our own ideas, but we have come to learn that differences of opinion are not the same as quarrels.
I wonder if we realise just how precious this spirit of friendliness and kindness is. We are living in an age which is hard and cruel, and if there is anything that we can offer to the world today perhaps it is the example of tolerance and understanding that runs like a golden thread through the great and diverse family of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
I send a special message to all those who are far from their homes and families on this Christmas Day. There is nothing new in this; we are a home loving people. But during the war we all looked forward so anxiously to the times when we shoudl spend Christmas together at home, and now the troubles of the world are forcing so many of us to be away from our families and our own homes.
The Queen and I join with all those of our people who are thinking today of the asent ones from the family circle, some of whom may be serving in foreign lands. They may be the young men doing their National Service. They may be the officers and men of my fighting services and of the merchant services. I know that on Christmas Day they will be thinking of their families at home, and you will be thinking of them.
But especially we are all thinking of our friends and our sons and brothers who are now facing hardships and dangers in Malaya and Korea. A "band of brothers" drawn from all parts of my Dominions.
The Queen and I wish you all near and far a happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year.

How the death of the late British monarch was captured on a series of archive films. George VI, "Bertie", was not the first in line to the throne, and did not want the role of Monarch. He preferred a quieter life with low profile public service, his nervousness of public profile reflected in his lifelong stammer, which he significantly overcame, thanks to help from speech therapists and the support of his wife Elizabeth. However, he led "us four", the family which stepped into the role of Royal Family, on the abdication of Edward VIII, and within a few years they restored and enhanced beyond expectations the image and respect for the British Royal Family, especially through their visibility as Britain came under attack in World War Two.
There is a famous line which summed them up, when the Queen was asked whether the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, should be evacuated to Canada as invasion seemed imminent, and the Blitz worsened. She replied "The children will not leave without their mother, their mother will not leave without the King, and the King will never leave". The pressure of the role, and its inevitable need to adapt with dignity to a new order at home and abroad after the war took its toll on the health of the shy and withdrawn man. His death followed a long illness from lung cancer but came unexpectedly. It can be seen from this footage that, whatever he was like as a monarch and an individual, the shock and the grief at his death, was genuine among his fanily and the people of Britain.

King goes to Chair of the State to take the oath. King signs the oath. The King takes off his robes before being anointed with holy oil beneath a golden canopy. The King puts on a robe of golden fabric. Lord Chamberlain touches the King's heels with the golden spurs of knighthood. Archbishop brings jewelled sword of state from the altar and hands it to the King. The King then offers it back to the Archbishop. Collar and mantle of cloth of gold are placed on the King by the Dean of Westminster. Orb is handed to the King. Ring, glove, sceptres with cross and dove are handed to King. Dean of Westminster carries the crown on a cushion; Archbishop places the crown on the King's head. The congregation shout "God Save The King" three times. King takes his place for the Homage. Peers of the Realm approach the King one by one, kneel, then touch his crown and kiss his left cheek.
Queen Elizabeth moves forward for her anointing and to receive the ring. Archbishop puts the crown on the Queen's head and gives her the sceptre and ivory rod. The Queen moves over to bow to the King then sits on a throne beside him. King and Queen move off with procession through the nave to leave the Abbey. 'God Save The King' is heard. Continued.

George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth.
As the second son of King George V, he was not expected to inherit the throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Edward. He served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during World War I, and after the war took on the usual round of public engagements. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, later that year Edward revealed his desire to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that for political and religious reasons he could not marry Mrs Simpson and remain king. Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

King George VI delivers his last Christmas Message on 25 December 1951. Transcript: As I speak to you today I would like to wish you, wherever you may be, a happy Christmas. Though we live in hard and critical times Christmas is, and always will be, a time when we can and should count our blessings - the blessings of home, the blessings of happy family gatherings, and the blessing of the hopeful message of Christmas. I myself have every cause for deep thankfulness, for not only - by the grace of God and through the faithful skill of my doctors, surgeons and nurses - have I come through my illness, but I have learned once again that it is in bad times that we value most highly the support and sympathy of our friends. From my peoples in these islands and in the British Commonwealth and Empire as well as from many other countries this support and sympathy has reached me and I thank you now from my heart. I trust that you yourselves realise how greatly your prayers and good wishes have helped and are helping me in my recovery. It has been a great disappointment to the Queen and myself that we have been compelled to give up for the second time the tour which we had planned for next year. We were looking forward to meeting my peoples in their own homes and we realise that they will share our regret that this cannot be. I am very glad that our daughter, Princess Elizabeth with her husband will be able to visit these countries and I know that their welcome there will be as warm as that which awaited us. You are most of you now sitting at home among your families, listening to me as I speak from mine. At Christmas we feel that the old simple things matter most. They do not change however much the world outside may seem to do so. When we say that Christmas brings good cheer we do not only think of material things, we think more of the feelings of friendliness and comradeship we have one for the other; and I think that, among all the blessings which we may count today, the chief one is that we are a friendly people. We do not all think alike, of course. We are such a large family of nations that this would be difficult. We each have our own ideas, but we have come to learn that differences of opinion are not the same as quarrels. I wonder if we realise just how precious this spirit of friendliness and kindness is. We are living in an age which is hard and cruel, and if there is anything that we can offer to the world today perhaps it is the example of tolerance and understanding that runs like a golden thread through the great and diverse family of the British Commonwealth of Nations. I send a special message to all those who are far from their homes and families on this Christmas Day. There is nothing new in this; we are a home loving people. But during the war we all looked forward so anxiously to the times when we shoudl spend Christmas together at home, and now the troubles of the world are forcing so many of us to be away from our families and our own homes. The Queen and I join with all those of our people who are thinking today of the asent ones from the family circle, some of whom may be serving in foreign lands. They may be the young men doing their National Service. They may be the officers and men of my fighting services and of the merchant services. I know that on Christmas Day they will be thinking of their families at home, and you will be thinking of them. But especially we are all thinking of our friends and our sons and brothers who are now facing hardships and dangers in Malaya and Korea. A "band of brothers" drawn from all parts of my Dominions. The Queen and I wish you all near and far a happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year. How the death of the late British monarch was captured on a series of archive films. George VI, "Bertie", was not the first in line to the throne, and did not want the role of Monarch. He preferred a quieter life with low profile public service, his nervousness of public profile reflected in his lifelong stammer, which he significantly overcame, thanks to help from speech therapists and the support of his wife Elizabeth. However, he led "us four", the family which stepped into the role of Royal Family, on the abdication of Edward VIII, and within a few years they restored and enhanced beyond expectations the image and respect for the British Royal Family, especially through their visibility as Britain came under attack in World War Two. There is a famous line which summed them up, when the Queen was asked whether the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, should be evacuated to Canada as invasion seemed imminent, and the Blitz worsened. She replied "The children will not leave without their mother, their mother will not leave without the King, and the King will never leave". The pressure of the role, and its inevitable need to adapt with dignity to a new order at home and abroad after the war took its toll on the health of the shy and withdrawn man. His death followed a long illness from lung cancer but came unexpectedly. It can be seen from this footage that, whatever he was like as a monarch and an individual, the shock and the grief at his death, was genuine among his fanily and the people of Britain. -

The King then offers it back to the Archbishop. Collar and mantle of cloth of gold are placed on the King by the Dean of Westminster. Orb is handed to the King. Ring, glove, sceptres with cross and dove are handed to King. Dean of Westminster carries the crown on a cushion; Archbishop places the crown on the King's head. The congregation shout "God Save The King" three times. King takes his place for the Homage. Peers of the Realm approach the King one by one, kneel, then touch his crown and kiss his left cheek. Queen Elizabeth moves forward for her anointing and to receive the ring. Archbishop puts the crown on the Queen's head and gives her the sceptre and ivory rod. The Queen moves over to bow to the King then sits on a throne beside him. King and Queen move off with procession through the nave to leave the Abbey. 'God Save The King' is heard. As I speak to you today I would like to wish you, wherever you may be, a happy Christmas. Though we live in hard and critical times Christmas is, and always will be, a time when we can and should count our blessings - the blessings of home, the blessings of happy family gatherings, and the blessing of the hopeful message of Christmas.
I myself have every cause for deep thankfulness, for not only - by the grace of God and through the faithful skill of my doctors, surgeons and nurses - have I come through my illness, but I have learned once again that it is in bad times that we value most highly the support and sympathy of our friends. From my peoples in these islands and in the British Commonwealth and Empire as well as from many other countries this support and sympathy has reached me and I thank you now from my heart. I trust that you yourselves realise how greatly your prayers and good wishes have helped and are helping me in my recovery.
It has been a great disappointment to the Queen and myself that we have been compelled to give up for the second time the tour which we had planned for next year. We were looking forward to meeting my peoples in their own homes and we realise that they will share our regret that this cannot be. I am very glad that our daughter, Princess Elizabeth with her husband will be able to visit these countries and I know that their welcome there will be as warm as that which awaited us.
You are most of you now sitting at home among your families, listening to me as I speak from mine. At Christmas we feel that the old simple things matter most. They do not change however much the world outside may seem to do so.
When we say that Christmas brings good cheer we do not only think of material things, we think more of the feelings of friendliness and comradeship we have one for the other; and I think that, among all the blessings which we may count today, the chief one is that we are a friendly people. We do not all think alike, of course. We are such a large family of nations that this would be difficult. We each have our own ideas, but we have come to learn that differences of opinion are not the same as quarrels.
I wonder if we realise just how precious this spirit of friendliness and kindness is. We are living in an age which is hard and cruel, and if there is anything that we can offer to the world today perhaps it is the example of tolerance and understanding that runs like a golden thread through the great and diverse family of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
I send a special message to all those who are far from their homes and families on this Christmas Day. There is nothing new in this; we are a home loving people. But during the war we all looked forward so anxiously to the times when we shoudl spend Christmas together at home, and now the troubles of the world are forcing so many of us to be away from our families and our own homes.
The Queen and I join with all those of our people who are thinking today of the asent ones from the family circle, some of whom may be serving in foreign lands. They may be the young men doing their National Service. They may be the officers and men of my fighting services and of the merchant services. I know that on Christmas Day they will be thinking of their families at home, and you will be thinking of them.
But especially we are all thinking of our friends and our sons and brothers who are now facing hardships and dangers in Malaya and Korea. A "band of brothers" drawn from all parts of my Dominions.
The Queen and I wish you all near and far a happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year.

How the death of the late British monarch was captured on a series of archive films. George VI, "Bertie", was not the first in line to the throne, and did not want the role of Monarch. He preferred a quieter life with low profile public service, his nervousness of public profile reflected in his lifelong stammer, which he significantly overcame, thanks to help from speech therapists and the support of his wife Elizabeth. However, he led "us four", the family which stepped into the role of Royal Family, on the abdication of Edward VIII, and within a few years they restored and enhanced beyond expectations the image and respect for the British Royal Family, especially through their visibility as Britain came under attack in World War Two.
There is a famous line which summed them up, when the Queen was asked whether the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, should be evacuated to Canada as invasion seemed imminent, and the Blitz worsened. She replied "The children will not leave without their mother, their mother will not leave without the King, and the King will never leave". The pressure of the role, and its inevitable need to adapt with dignity to a new order at home and abroad after the war took its toll on the health of the shy and withdrawn man. His death followed a long illness from lung cancer but came unexpectedly. It can be seen from this footage that, whatever he was like as a monarch and an individual, the shock and the grief at his death, was genuine among his fanily and the people of Britain.

King signs the oath. The King takes off his robes before being anointed with holy oil beneath a golden canopy. The King puts on a robe of golden fabric. Lord Chamberlain touches the King's heels with the golden spurs of knighthood. Archbishop brings jewelled sword of state from the altar and hands it to the King. The King then offers it back to the Archbishop. Collar and mantle of cloth of gold are placed on the King by the Dean of Westminster. Orb is handed to the King. Ring, glove, sceptres with cross and dove are handed to King. Dean of Westminster carries the crown on a cushion; Archbishop places the crown on the King's head. The congregation shout "God Save The King" three times. King takes his place for the Homage. Peers of the Realm approach the King one by one, kneel, then touch his crown and kiss his left cheek.
Queen Elizabeth moves forward for her anointing and to receive the ring. Archbishop puts the crown on the Queen's head and gives her the sceptre and ivory rod. The Queen moves over to bow to the King then sits on a throne beside him. King and Queen move off with procession through the nave to leave the Abbey. 'God Save The King' is heard. Continued.

Archbishop asks the King if he will solemnly promise to govern Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the union of South Africa, the Empire of India. The King answers he will. King signs the oath. The King takes off his robes before being anointed with holy oil beneath a golden canopy. The King puts on a robe of golden fabric. Lord Chamberlain touches the King's heels with the golden spurs of knighthood. Archbishop brings jewelled sword of state from the altar and hands it to the King. The King then offers it back to the Archbishop. Collar and mantle of cloth of gold are placed on the King by the Dean of Westminster. Orb is handed to the King. Ring, glove, sceptres with cross and dove are handed to King. Dean of Westminster carries the crown on a cushion; Archbishop places the crown on the King's head. The congregation shout "God Save The King" three times. King takes his place for the Homage. Peers of the Realm approach the King one by one, kneel, then touch his crown and kiss his left cheek.
Queen Elizabeth moves forward for her anointing and to receive the ring. Archbishop puts the crown on the Queen's head and gives her the sceptre and ivory rod. The Queen moves over to bow to the King then sits on a throne beside him. King and Queen move off with procession through the nave to leave the Abbey. 'God Save The King' is heard. Continued.

The film explores the relationship between King George VI and his wife Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Elizabeth) from their very first meeting to the King's death in the winter of 1952. Bertie and Elizabeth was commissioned especially for the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II and was first broadcast on ITV1 on 4 June 2002, only two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
The film begins with the initial meeting between the then Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and then moves on through their courtship, marriage, succession to the throne after the abdication of Edward VIII, and World War II.
The film portrays King George VI's struggle to overcome his stammer, the fear he felt towards his father, and the punishing stress the King was placed under during the abdication crisis of 1936.

Though Britain and its allies were ultimately victorious, the United States and the Soviet Union rose as pre-eminent world powers and the British Empire declined. After the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947, George remained as king of both countries, but the title Emperor of India was abandoned in June 1948. Ireland formally declared a republic, leaving the Commonwealth, in 1949 and India became a republic within the Commonwealth the following year. George adopted the new title of Head of the Commonwealth. He was beset by health problems in the later years of his reign. His elder daughter, Elizabeth II, succeeded him.

In January 2011, veteran journalist, George Curry visited Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire to interview both Ivorian leaders, Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara on the electoral stalemate which has both of them claiming that they won Côte d'Ivoire's 2010 November presidential election. Though the international community is supporting Ouattara and has somewhat painted a negative picture of Gbagbo, in this interview, he appears to be quite personable and honest. Mr. Curry said he made several attempts to interview Ouattara as well, but it couldn't be arranged while he was there. Mr. Curry has offered to return to Abidjan to interview Ouattara, but that still hasn't been arranged yet.
