A trade bloc is a type of intergovernmental agreement, often part of a regional intergovernmental organization, where regional barriers to trade, (tariffs and non-tariff barriers) are reduced or eliminated among the participating states.
Historic economic blocs include the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance in northern Europe in existence between the 13th and 17th centuries and the German Customs Union (Zollverein) initiated in 1834, formed on the basis of the German Confederation and subsequently German Empire from 1871. Surges of trade bloc formation were seen in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as in the 1990s after the collapse of Communism. By 1997, more than 50% of all world commerce was conducted within regional trade blocs.
Economist Jeffrey J. Scott of the Peterson Institute for International Economics notes that members of successful trade blocs usually share four common traits: similar levels of per capita GNP, geographic proximity, similar or compatible trading regimes, and political commitment to regional organization.
This video gives an overview of the types of trade agreements, or trade blocs. "Episode 38: Trade Blocs" by Dr. Mary J. McGlasson is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

African leaders have signed a agreement in Egypt to create a new free-trade zone stretching from Cairo to Cape Town. The Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) will include 26 countries - around half the continent's total - uniting three existing trade blocs in eastern and southern Africa. It is hoped that reducing trade barriers will bring prices down and boost economic activity between African countries that has long suffered for several reasons including poor infrastructure. The Sudanese ambass… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/06/10/african-leaders-sign-pact-to-create-cape-to-cairo-free-trade-bloc What are the top stories today? The pact known as the Tripartite Free Trade Area was signed after five years of negotiations in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. The deal is intended to ease the movement of goods across member countries. It will still need to be ratified by the parliaments of signatory states. According to analysts, the pact could have enormous effects on African economies, which despite growth still only account for about two percent of global trade. At the end of May, the European Union endorsed stricter import requirements for South African citrus fruit. Among other things, those measures mean farmers and exporters must keep records of pre and post-harvest chemical treatments, mandatory registration of packing houses and on-site official inspections at orchards. Angelo Coppola spent some time with citrus farmers in the Eastern Cape province to figure out how the new measures will work.

South Africa's agricultural industry is still dealing with the economic fallout from one of the worst droughts to hit the country in three decades. It isn't alone, however. Many Southern African states are facing the exact same conditions. The regional bloc, SADC, is now launching a multibillion-dollar international appeal for assistance. Travers Andrews has this report.
While free trade has become unpopular in some parts of the world, the presidents of the Pacific Alliance trade bloc make the case for its benefits. Chile, Colombia, and Peru's presidents, along with Mexico's economy secretary, took on the subject at an AS/COA event on September 21 during their visit to New York for the 71st UN General Assembly. "Opening up economies has been extremely productive to the world," said recently elected Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. "We've had the best period of growth in the last 50 years." In this highlights video of the panel, the leaders also discussed their hopes for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), as well as their views on the U.S. election. Mexico's Ildefonso Guajardo emphasized the importance of maintaining stable U.S.-Mexico ties, say...

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is an agreement signed by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. The agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. It superseded the Canada -- United States Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and Canada. In terms of combined GDP of its members, as of 2010 the trade bloc is the largest in the world. NAFTA has two supplements: the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) and the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC). Securing U.S. congressional approval for NAFTA would have been impossible without addressing public concerns about NAFTA's environmental impact. The Clinton administration negotiated a side agreement on the environment with...
The United Kingdom's vote last week to exit the European Union should have little short-term impact on trade flows, as long as negotiations on the country's split with the trade bloc do not drag on too long, the top executive of UPS (UPS.N) said on Thursday. "If the government sorts things out in a way that's considered reasonable in the minds of our shippers, then I believe it will have much less effect," United Parcel Service Inc Chief Executive David Abney told Reuters in an interview at the company's Atlanta headquarters. "But if this thing gets long drawn out and real complicated, that never helps anything." The CEO of the world's largest package delivery company said the referendum result will have no impact on UPS's five-year, $2 billion expansion in the EU, set to end in 2019, in...
