This short film is part of a larger collection of folklore recorded by Michael Fortune featuring two men John Murphy and Ned Kavanagh from Kilmuckridge, Co. Wexford. The recordings are based around sites of folkloric importance, and this particular recording relates to Ballyscough Bridge which borders the villages of Oulart and Kilmuckridge in Co. Wexford.
The recording was undertaken by Michael Fortune in July 2015 in John's yard in the townsland of Morriscastle. The recording session was unplanned, and the only equipment Michael had with him was a small dslr camera without external microphone or tripod. Regardless of this, the camera captures the natural conversation between two neighbours as they re-count stories from the places around which they live.
Both men have distinctive accents. John’s in particular is an old accent found along the East Coast of County Wexford. John’s accent and dialect is sadly disappearing along this stretch of coast and it’s demise is due to a variety of reasons; primarily tourism, educational development and the influx of people from Dublin. John’s yard is surrounded by holiday homes and mobile home parks. Many of the people in which both men speak of have either passed away or the places have been consumed into the tourist bubble which has engulfed the fields and roads of the area.
Kilmuckridge lies to the south of an area called “The Macamores”, an ancient Gaelic controlled territory which ran from Kilmuckridge, County Wexford to Arklow in County Wicklow. Overlooked by many, the area is steeped in a rich folklore and dialect, and contains many intriguing cultural and linguistic links between neighbouring Wales, West Country England, Cornwall and the North of Ireland.

Jackie O'Shea, a resident of the tiny Irish coastal village of Tully More, discovers that one of his neighbors has won the lottery - the question is, who? It takes some doing, but Jackie figures out that the lucky person is none other than his new best friend, Ned Devine. Unfortunately, it turns out Ned is in no position to collect the jackpot, which totals almost 6.9 million Irish pounds. Ned Irish
Edward S. "Ned" Irish (May 6, 1905 in Lake George, New York – January 21, 1982) was a basketball promoter and one of the key figures in popularizing professional basketball. He was the president of the New York Knicks from 1946 to 1974. He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1964.
Biography
A pioneer in the late 1930s in the big-time promotion of college basketball, Ned Irish took the sport from small venues to Madison Square Garden. He also founded the New York Knicks and assisted in the organization of the National Basketball Association. For his part in popularizing basketball, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1964.
Irish grew up near Lake George, New York. He had already launched his business career at age 10. Following in his late father's footsteps, he earned money by selling sodas and newspapers and by renting boats. His mother, a practical nurse, then moved the family to Brooklyn. As a student at Brooklyn's Erasmus Hall High School, Irish covered prep and amateur sports for three New York dailies, managed the school's swimming and tennis teams, was class president, was a member of the Omega Gamma Delta Fraternity and worked in the school cafeteria.

Ned, who went to sea at 13, found he was able to keep his Manx "alive" by talking to Gaelic-speaking sailors on British ships. He was brought up in the remote village of Cregneash, where "unless you had the Manx you were a deaf and dumb man and no good to anybody." This short film is part of a larger collection of folklore recorded by Michael Fortune featuring two men John Murphy and Ned Kavanagh from Kilmuckridge, Co. Wexford. The recordings are based around sites of folkloric importance, and this particular recording relates to Ballyscough Bridge which borders the villages of Oulart and Kilmuckridge in Co. Wexford.
The recording was undertaken by Michael Fortune in July 2015 in John's yard in the townsland of Morriscastle. The recording session was unplanned, and the only equipment Michael had with him was a small dslr camera without external microphone or tripod. Regardless of this, the camera captures the natural conversation between two neighbours as they re-count stories from the places around which they live.
Both men have distinctive accents. John’s in particular is an old accent found along the East Coast of County Wexford. John’s accent and dialect is sadly disappearing along this stretch of coast and it’s demise is due to a variety of reasons; primarily tourism, educational development and the influx of people from Dublin. John’s yard is surrounded by holiday homes and mobile home parks. Many of the people in which both men speak of have either passed away or the places have been consumed into the tourist bubble which has engulfed the fields and roads of the area.
Kilmuckridge lies to the south of an area called “The Macamores”, an ancient Gaelic controlled territory which ran from Kilmuckridge, County Wexford to Arklow in County Wicklow. Overlooked by many, the area is steeped in a rich folklore and dialect, and contains many intriguing cultural and linguistic links between neighbouring Wales, West Country England, Cornwall and the North of Ireland.

Ned Broy- The Greatest Spy Of Ireland’s Freedom Struggle?
Theme of documentary-
This 45 minute documentary investigates the heroic deeds of the forgotten Irish patriot and spy Ned Broy and explains how many of the key events in the Irish revolutionary leader Michael Collin’s successful intelligence war against the British Empire during Ireland’s struggle for independence (from 1919 to 1921), can be linked back to his ace-spy Ned Broy. While Broy was only one of a few in Collin’s spy network, nevertheless he punched way above his weight and helped Collins wrest the intelligence initiative from the British. For example: 1., he successfully smuggled Collins into the nerve-centre of British intelligence in Ireland, G-Division’s files storeroom in Brunswick station; 2., he helped mentor Collins in espionage and the G-Division mindset; 3., he passed on invaluable intelligence to Collins on a continual basis; 4., and he saved Collins from capture on several occasions. Thus, without Broy’s input, Collin’s intelligence war might never have taken the direction it did, nor been as successful.

This is not a street fight, it is a sport with 2 referees, or fair play men to make sure both fighters obey the rules. Contests usually end either when either or both men say they have had enough or one is beaten or knocked out.***

Brad Pitt plays the part of a bare knuckle boxing champion in the movie Snatch. The award winning documentary 'Knuckle' covered the subject. Paddy Doherty, a former bare knuckle fighter, won the UK reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother and it has also been seen in the TV series Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.
Travellers are of Irish decent but have moved to other parts of Europe, mainly England the the rest of the UK. Some have moved as far as America, USA.
