30 St Mary Axe (widely known informally as The Gherkin and previously as the Swiss Re Building) is a commercial skyscraper in London's primary financial district, the City of London. It was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004.[4] With 41 storeys, it is 180 metres (591 ft) tall[3] and stands on the former sites of the Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, which were extensively damaged in 1992 by the explosion of a bomb placed by the Provisional IRA in St Mary Axe, the street from which the tower takes its name.[4][9]
After plans to build the 92-storey Millennium Tower were dropped, 30 St Mary Axe was designed by Norman Foster and Arup Group[10] and it was erected by Skanska, with construction commencing in 2001.[3]
The building has become an iconic symbol of London and is one of the city's most widely recognised examples of contemporary architecture.
A new building is planned to join the cluster of famous skyscrapers in London's financial district, which is known as the City. 1 Undershaft will be the tallest building in the district, and the second-tallest in the UK. It will also house the UK's highest public viewing gallery and London's highest public restaurant.
1 Undershaft was designed by architect Eric Parry on behalf of Singapore-based developer Aroland Holdings. Assuming it comes to fruition, it will be surrounded by the likes of 20 Fenchurch Street, the Leadenhall Building and 22 Bishopsgate. The only building that will reach higher than it in the UK, the Shard, will be just across the River Thames.
The 73-story building will be 294.6 m (967 ft) tall. There will be a new public square at the base of 1 Undershaft and an elevated reception area that will allow people to walk underneath the building. This space is designed in part to link the St. Andrew Undershaft and St. Helen's Bishopsgate churches, which are two of London's oldest places of worship.
The public viewing gallery will be served by dedicated lifts, and will have an accompanying Education Centre with two classrooms for visits by school groups. Elsewhere, the building will have 1,800 sq m (19,375 sq ft) of basement-level retail space, which will house restaurants, cafes, and shops.
Once complete, the building will accommodate 10,000 people. There will be space for storing 1,500 bikes, as well as shower and changing facilities to encourage active commuting. Deliveries to the building will be made outside of peak hours via an off-site consolidation center so as to minimize traffic.
Parry says the building will set new standards for the City in terms of comfort, quality, environmental sustainability; that it will serve both the companies who take up residence in it and the public; and that it will be used seven days a week due to its viewing gallery, restaurant and public square.
"It will be a building where the public are put first with a new public square at its base and the capital's tallest free public viewing gallery at its top," he says in a press release. "1 Undershaft will create more of the quality office space that is desperately needed in the capital and will reconnect the city's tall building cluster with the public."
Public consultation days this month will be followed by the submission of a planning application in the new year.

In St Mary's Axe, under the shadow of the Gherkin, is a church that survived the Fire of London.
St. Andrews Undershaft is so-called because it used to have a huge maypole outside in the 15th century which was taller than the steeple. In 1517 there was a riot when City apprentices rioted against foreigners "coming over here and stealing our jobs". (It seems things haven't changed after all these years!) So the maypole was taken down and never used again.
Inside the church there is a memorial to John Stow , the father of London historians. John Stow traversed London documenting every detail, mapping it and observing details about the people and buildings in his Survey of London.
He died in 1605 and now every three years there is a ceremony where the Lord Mayor of London replaces his quill.
William Shakespeare would have known this church pretty much exactly as it is today as he appears in the rate assessment in this parish and would have visited it.
Nearby is the Gherkin and the Lloyds building which is the most modern listed building in london.

This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. If you are visiting London and would like to see the sights for yourself, the best way is to walk, rather than take public transport. This walk is one I would definitely recommend.

St Andrew Undershaft is a Church of England church located at St Mary Axe, in Aldgate ward of the City of London, near the Lloyd's Building. It is a rare example of a City church that has managed to escape both the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the Second World War bombing during the London Blitz of 1940-1941.
The first church on the site was built in medieval times, being recorded in 1147. It was rebuilt in the fourteenth century and again in 1532, when the present church building was constructed. It is in the Perpendicular style with its entrance located at the base of its off-centre tower. The interior is divided into six bays, with a many of the original fittings that have fortunately survived Victorian renovation. Formerly, the church had one of London's few surviving large stained-glass windows, installed in the 17th century, but this was destroyed in an IRA bomb-attack in 1992.
The church's curious name derives from the shaft of the maypole that was traditionally set up each year opposite the church. The custom continued each spring until 1517, when student riots put an end to it, but the maypole itself survived until 1547 when a Puritan mob seized it and destroyed it as a "pagan idol".

A new building is planned to join the cluster of famous skyscrapers in London's financial district, which is known as the City. 1 Undershaft will be the tallest building in the district, and the second-tallest in the UK. It will also house the UK's highest public viewing gallery and London's highest public restaurant. 1 Undershaft was designed by architect Eric Parry on behalf of Singapore-based developer Aroland Holdings. A Walk Through the City of London from Barbican to London Bridge, England - 14th June, 2014
This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. 30 St Mary Axe (widely known informally as The Gherkin and previously as the Swiss Re Building) is a commercial skyscraper in London's primary financial district, the City of London. It was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004.[4] With 41 storeys, it is 180 metres (591 ft) tall[3] and stands on the former sites of the Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, which were extensively damaged in 1992 by the explosion of a bomb placed by the Provisional IRA in St Mary Axe, the street from which the tower takes its name.[4][9]
After plans to build the 92-storey Millennium Tower were dropped, 30 St Mary Axe was designed by Norman Foster and Arup Group[10] and it was erected by Skanska, with construction commencing in 2001.[3]
The building has become an iconic symbol of London and is one of the city's most widely recognised examples of contemporary architecture.

Parry says the building will set new standards for the City in terms of comfort, quality, environmental sustainability; that it will serve both the companies who take up residence in it and the public; and that it will be used seven days a week due to its viewing gallery, restaurant and public square.

"1 Undershaft will create more of the quality office space that is desperately needed in the capital and will reconnect the city's tall building cluster with the public."

This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge.
