Kenyan farmers say a British ban on the plant known as khat will seriously affect their businesses and economy. Exports of khat, also called miraa, are worth a lot of money to Kenya. The farmers have exported the plant mainly to European countries and Somalia. Khat is grown in the colder climates of central Kenya. For years, people have been using it as a drug. Chewing the leaves of the plant can increase the heartbeat and make a person feel more awake. Some Kenyan politicians and khat traders have called on the government to open talks with British officials to convince them to cancel the ban on khat. They say ending the ban would save Kenya's khat industry from collapse. Kipkorir Menjo is the director of the Kenya Farmers Association. He says the ban will affect tens of thousands of people.In July, British Home Secretary Theresa May banned the leafy stimulant. She warned that traders could use Britain to move khat illegally to other European countries. Khat is already banned in most European countries, including France, Germany and the Netherlands. Kenyan traders exported about 20 tons of khat to the Netherlands weekly before the ban. Another 36 tons a week was sent to Britain. Kipkorir Menjo says khat farmers and traders need to speak up so that Britain can lift the ban.As the farmers and traders study the latest developments in Europe, another battle awaits them inside Kenya. The team of Kenyan wildlife rangers crouched behind a veil of green bracken as they waited for their target.
When two armed poachers walked by, the 12-man Kenyan squad opened fire, unleashed 30 seconds of gunfire - with blank rounds - sending the role-playing pair to the ground.
Standing nearby was a team of British paratroopers leading the Kenyans through an anti-poaching exercise on the slopes of Mount Kenya on Thursday.
The three-day training exercise is part of increased efforts the international community is making to help protect African elephants and rhinos from increasingly deadly attacks from poachers who send ivory and rhino horn to Asia's growing middle class.
"We'll deliver information and the lessons to them and then these guys will be able to take away the skills and experience they've gained here to their colleagues back at their stations so hopefully it is a kind of maybe an ink spot theory of knowledge so they can take it back and then spread that amongst their colleagues," said Captain Ben Neary - one of the officers who has been training the Kenyan rangers.
During Thursday's exercise, about a dozen rangers from the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service crept through the woods, using hand signals to move as silently as possible.
Neary said the main focus of the training was to teach the Kenyan rangers on various tactics from knowing the terrain they are working in and understanding the kind of opposition they are bound to encounter.
Five Kenya Wildlife Service rangers have been killed in the line of duty this year, the same number that was killed last year.
Poachers have killed 280 elephants in Kenya this year, a huge number but down from last year, when 384 were killed.
Kenya's elephant population is estimated to be around 35,000.
Neary said the British army has been training the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) for years as way of thanking the country for allowing them to train there.
"KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) and KFS (Kenya forest Service) know our tactics, we were teaching them 20, 30 years ago so it's almost irrelevant really it's just that the timing maybe coincidental with the rise in that sort of illegal activity but our focus is just, you know, keep developing, keep the training consistent as to what they already know what they need," said Neary.

British Army troops joins forces with Kenyan anti-poaching groups in an effort to crack down on illegal wildlife crime.

British Army paratroopers on Thursday finished training about 50 Kenyan rangers on anti-poaching and illegal logging detection skills.
It's part of the British government's pledge to offer anti-poaching training to the Kenyan Wildlife Service, the Kenyan Forest Service, and other conservation agents.
[Captain Ben Neary, British Army Paratrooper]:
"The first day we literally just have a talk with the guys, understand where they operate, the challenges they face and they are taken right down to basic patrolling skills and as you have seen today we have moved through basic patrolling skills, to ways to protect themselves if they come under fire, how to operate and use the ground and understand the enemy."
Elephant poaching has revived in recent years, driven by fast-rising demand for ornamental ivory in Asia in step with growing Chinese influence and investment in Africa.
According to reports by global wildlife authorities, increased poaching, human wildlife conflicts and loss of habitats are drastically reducing elephant populations, especially in Central African countries.
The UN estimates that more than 17-thousand elephants were illegally killed in monitored sites in 2011 alone.
Overall figures may be much higher.
[Captain Ben Neary, British Army Paratrooper]:
"None of us wants to see the wildlife in this country disappear, so from a personal level it is great to help the guys protect the park. What we have done is a lot of work in terms of helping the guys in what we call interdict prior to any lethal action. So we have reinforced their means of arrest and hopefully the legal system can back that up so when the guys do arrests they get prosecuted."
The extent of African elephant killings now far exceeds the natural population growth rates, putting them at risk of extinction, especially in Central and Western Africa.
Even previously secure populations, such as those in East Africa, are now under threat.

Kenyan farmers say a British ban on the plant known as khat will seriously affect their businesses and economy. Exports of khat, also called miraa, are worth a lot of money to Kenya. The farmers have exported the plant mainly to European countries and Somalia. Khat is grown in the colder climates of central Kenya. For years, people have been using it as a drug. Chewing the leaves of the plant can increase the heartbeat and make a person feel more awake. Some Kenyan politicians and khat traders have called on the government to open talks with British officials to convince them to cancel the ban on khat. The team of Kenyan wildlife rangers crouched behind a veil of green bracken as they waited for their target.
When two armed poachers walked by, the 12-man Kenyan squad opened fire, unleashed 30 seconds of gunfire - with blank rounds - sending the role-playing pair to the ground.
Standing nearby was a team of British paratroopers leading the Kenyans through an anti-poaching exercise on the slopes of Mount Kenya on Thursday.
The three-day training exercise is part of increased efforts the international community is making to help protect African elephants and rhinos from increasingly deadly attacks from poachers who send ivory and rhino horn to Asia's growing middle class.
"We'll deliver information and the lessons to them and then these guys will be able to take away the skills and experience they've gained here to their colleagues back at their stations so hopefully it is a kind of maybe an ink spot theory of knowledge so they can take it back and then spread that amongst their colleagues," said Captain Ben Neary - one of the officers who has been training the Kenyan rangers.
During Thursday's exercise, about a dozen rangers from the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service crept through the woods, using hand signals to move as silently as possible.
Neary said the main focus of the training was to teach the Kenyan rangers on various tactics from knowing the terrain they are working in and understanding the kind of opposition they are bound to encounter.
Five Kenya Wildlife Service rangers have been killed in the line of duty this year, the same number that was killed last year.
Poachers have killed 280 elephants in Kenya this year, a huge number but down from last year, when 384 were killed.
Kenya's elephant population is estimated to be around 35,000.
Neary said the British army has been training the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) for years as way of thanking the country for allowing them to train there.

British Army paratroopers on Thursday finished training about 50 Kenyan rangers on anti-poaching and illegal logging detection skills.
It's part of the British government's pledge to offer anti-poaching training to the Kenyan Wildlife Service, the Kenyan Forest Service, and other conservation agents.
[Captain Ben Neary, British Army Paratrooper]:
"The first day we literally just have a talk with the guys, understand where they operate, the challenges they face and they are taken right down to basic patrolling skills and as you have seen today we have moved through basic patrolling skills, to ways to protect themselves if they come under fire, how to operate and use the ground and understand the enemy."
Elephant poaching has revived in recent years, driven by fast-rising demand for ornamental ivory in Asia in step with growing Chinese influence and investment in Africa.
According to reports by global wildlife authorities, increased poaching, human wildlife conflicts and loss of habitats are drastically reducing elephant populations, especially in Central African countries.
The UN estimates that more than 17-thousand elephants were illegally killed in monitored sites in 2011 alone.
Overall figures may be much higher.

"None of us wants to see the wildlife in this country disappear, so from a personal level it is great to help the guys protect the park. What we have done is a lot of work in terms of helping the guys in what we call interdict prior to any lethal action. So we have reinforced their means of arrest and hopefully the legal system can back that up so when the guys do arrests they get prosecuted."
The extent of African elephant killings now far exceeds the natural population growth rates, putting them at risk of extinction, especially in Central and Western Africa.
Even previously secure populations, such as those in East Africa, are now under threat.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, a leader of the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union, was facing strong criticism Friday for suggesting U.S. President Barack Obama may have an "ancestral dislike of the British Empire" because of his Kenyan roots.
On a visit to the U.K., Obama weighed in to Britain's debate about European Union membership, urging voters to back staying in the 28-nation bloc. The president wrote in the Daily Telegraph newspaper that the EU "enhances Britain's global leadership."
His intervention angered campaigners for a "leave" vote in the June 23 referendum, who accused the president of meddling.
Johnson said Obama's advice was "paradoxical, inconsistent, incoherent" because Americans "would never contemplate anything like the EU for themselves."
Writing in The Sun newspaper, Johnson recounted a claim that a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was removed from the Oval Office after Obama was elected and returned to the British Embassy.
Johnson wrote that some said removing the bust "was a symbol of the part-Kenyan president's ancestral dislike of the British Empire, of which Churchill had been such a fervent defender."
Obama's late father was from Kenya, a former British colony that gained independence in the 1960s.
Johnson's comments drew criticism from his political opponents. Former Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell said "this attack constitutes an unacceptable smear."
"Many people will find Boris Johnson's loaded attack on President Obama's sincerity deeply offensive," he said.

Saitoti left KANU and joined the opposition, becoming a kingpin figure in the negotiations that led to the "NARC Revolution" in 2002. As Minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and key member of the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC), he later worked closely with the national Ministry of Defence to see through the Operation Linda Nchi against the Al-Shabaab insurgent group. In addition, rival factions had for decades invoked the infamous Goldenberg fraud to knock Saitoti out of politics, but the legal courts cleared him of the scandal in July 2006.[10] Saitoti's dual heritage as a Maasai with Kikuyu family members predisposed him to a pan-Kenyan vision, but also denied him a strong ethnic base unlike his competitors. As one of Kenya's most experienced, unassuming and shrewd politicians, Saitoti was billed[by whom?] as a front-runner in the race to succeed President Mwai Kibaki.

Britain fought in the Second World War to save the world from fascism. But just a few years after the defeat of Hitler came the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya - a mass armed rebellion by the Kikuyu people, demanding the return of their land and freedom. The draconian response of Britain's colonial government was to detain nearly the entire Kikuyu population of one-and-a half-million - to hold them in camps or confine them in villages ringed with barbed wire - and to portray them as sub-human savages.
From 1952 until the end of the war in 1960 tens of thousands of detainees - and possibly a hundred thousand or more - died from the combined effects of exhaustion, disease, starvation and systemic physical brutality. Until now these events have remained untold, largely because the British government in Kenya destroyed most of its files. For the last eight years Caroline Elkins has conducted exhaustive research to piece together the story, unearthing reams of documents and interviewing several hundred Kikuyu survivors.
