Papyrology expert, Margaret Mountford goes in search of the truth behind the legend of Sappho - the most controversial writer of the ancient world and the first authentic woman’s voice in western history. The mysterious discovery of a lost papyrus containing the words to songs unheard for seventeen hundred years sends Margaret on a journey to explore the truth about Sappho. Was she indeed the first lesbian, a priestess, prostitute, a stern schoolmistress or an aristocratic lady of leisure as readers over the centuries have variously alleged? We ask how each generation’s view of the archetypal liberated woman of letters tells us as much about us and our fears and concerns as it does about her.

Sappho (
/ˈsæfoʊ/; Attic Greek Σαπφώ [sapːʰɔː], Aeolic Greek Ψάπφω [psapːʰɔː]) was an Ancient Greek poet, born on the island of Lesbos. Later Greeks included her in the list of nine lyric poets. Her birth was sometime between 630 and 612 BC, and it is said that she died around 570 BC, but little is known for certain about her life. The bulk of her poetry, which was well-known and greatly admired throughout antiquity, has been lost, but her immense reputation has endured through surviving fragments.
The only contemporary source for Sappho's life is her own poetry, and scholars are skeptical of reading it biographically. Later biographical accounts are also unreliable.
Strabo indicates that Sappho was the contemporary of Alcaeus of Mytilene (born ca. 620 BC) and Pittacus (ca. 645 - 570 BC), and according to Athenaeus, she was the contemporary of Alyattes of Lydia (ca. 610 - 560 BC). The Suda, a 10th century Byzantine encyclopædia, dates her to the 42nd Olympiad (612/608 BC), meaning either that she was born then or that this was her floruit. The versions of Eusebius state that she was famous by the first or second year of the 45th or 46th Olympiad (between 600 and 594 BC). Taken together, these references make it likely that she was born ca. 620 BC, or a little earlier.

Sappho: Lyrical Fragments, for 2 sopranos & strings (1981) Patricia Rozario, soprano Julia Gooding, soprano The Orchestra of the Academy of Ancient Music Paul Goodwin When John Tavener suffered a stroke in 1980 at the age of 36, his former wife Vicky Maragopoulou flew in from Greece; they had remained close friends even after their marriage ended. She was shocked at his appearance but even more amazed that he wanted to compose. He pressed her in to service, as he was setting some poetry by the Classic Greek poetess Sappho. He intended to write it in Greek, and asked her to be sure he did not betray the Greek language. Sappho was a Greek lyric poet, born on the island of Lesbos. The Alexandrians included her in the list of nine lyric poets. Notice that the letter F represents here a digamma, which sounds like /w/.

When John Tavener suffered a stroke in 1980 at the age of 36, his former wife Vicky Maragopoulou flew in from Greece; they had remained close friends even after their marriage ended. She was shocked at his appearance but even more amazed that he wanted to compose. He pressed her in to service, as he was setting some poetry by the Classic Greek poetess Sappho. He intended to write it in Greek, and asked her to be sure he did not betray the Greek language.
The poetry Tavener selected includes songs depicting Aphrodite; Sappho's beloved daughter Cleis; and Arthis, the woman Sappho had loved in the past. The cycle is written for two soprano voices, often intertwining (while at other times one of the voices provides a drone note for the other), and a string orchestra. The mood of the piece is soft and gentle. There is no effort to capture the sound of Greece music. [allmusic.com]

It wasnt by design, she says. But when I realized this was happening, I began to look for patterns and common themes among the works I was studying. SAPPHO - THE VENUS OF LESBOS - First 10 minutes widescreen - Tina Louise - Kerwin Mathews
The first 10 minutes of SAPPHO THE VENUS OF LEBOS minus the opening credits. This is my favorite set of sequences in a row from any film of the PEPLUM genre. Directed by Pietro Francisci. I could have included it in my 30 Greatest PEPLUM Sequences but this 10 minutes is a series of sequences and not just one so I didn't include it but imo it's brilliant in the way it sets up the entire story on a visual basis, in the process continuously shifting gears between sequences, with almost no dialogue. It also goes through more PEPLUM elements/clichés in that 10 minutes than most films do in their entirety. The wonderful score by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino also helps tremendously. Interview with Professor Elizabeth Berlinger.
As a graduate student in Humanities at the University of Chicago, Elizabeth Berlinger found herself reading a lot of poetry by women. It wasnt by design, she says. But when I realized this was happening, I began to look for patterns and common themes among the works I was studying. These days, Berlinger conveys her fascination with writing by women in English 353—Women in Literature—which she teaches as an adjunct lecturer in BMCCs English Department.
There are different ways to organize a survey course like this—by theme or subject matter, for example, she says. I take a chronological approach, beginning with Sappho, the ancient Greek poet, and proceeding through medieval times, the Victorian era and the 20th Century to the present day. In that way, she says, were able to gain an historical perspective and see how each artist built on the work of those who came before her.
A lot of ground to cover
Every era has its stars—from Marie de France and Julia of Norwich, who provided insights into daily life in the Middle Ages, to 20th- and 21st-Century pioneers like Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath and Toni Morrison.
Because we have to cover so much in a short time, I try to choose a variety of genres—poetry, memoirs and essays, and fiction as well as non-fiction, Berlinger says. The idea is to provide at least a taste of many historical periods, cultures and ethnic groups. Admittedly, some works, particularly the older ones, are more accessible and easier to relate to than others. While it is sometimes possible to approach the works on a purely artistic level, she notes, it often helps to contextualize them as much as possible—to view them against the historical and cultural climate of the time.
Even so, certain interlocking themes emerge time and again, irrespective of when the writer lived. We look at the suppression of women and its impact on them personally and professionally, Berlinger says. We look at the constraints traditionally imposed by marriage and family, conceptions of sexuality and identity, how women envision God, and even psychological issues such as madness and mental health.
Strong responses
The readings often elicit passionate reactions from the students, ranging from pride in the accomplishments of women to anger about the injustices they have suffered. The emotional reactions and personal stories students bring to our classroom discussions—often in response to writers they are experiencing for the first time—are an invaluable part of the course, Berlinger says.
Perhaps not surprisingly, enrollment in Women in Literature is predominantly female. But the men who have taken the course have been every bit as

Daniel Mendelsohn, Waiting for the Barbarians: Essays from the Classics to Pop Culture (New York Review Books).
From the Publisher: Over the past decade and a half, Daniel Mendelsohn's reviews for The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Book Review have earned him a reputation as "one of the greatest critics of our time" (Poets & Writers). In Waiting for the Barbarians, he brings together twenty-four of his recent essays—each one glinting with "verve and sparkle," "acumen and passion"—on a range of subjects from Avatar to the poems of Arthur Rimbaud, from our inexhaustible fascination with the Titanic to Susan Sontag's Journals. Heated discussion turns to spirited dialogue as students join in protesting homophobic book ban at Orangeview Junior High
ANAHEIM - A group of fifty people protested against the homophobic book banning at Orangeview Junior High with Ban the Ban on Thursday, February 1. Protesters included people from organizations such as Liberate Orange County, ACT UP San Francisco, Queer Nation, PFLAG, the Libertarian Party, the OC Youth Drop-In Center, the Loyola Marymount University Gay/Straight Alliance, teachers from several Orange County school districts, and students from several Orange County schools.
As Orangeview students left school, protesters cheerfully greeted them with balloons, fake tattoos, stickers, rainbow-colored pencils that read "Don't Censor Me!," and flyers which explained the book ban at their school on one side, and had a list of about 100 famous lesbians and gay men on the other side. Flyers and pencils were so popular with students that they were all handed out within the first ten minutes, and many students kept asking protesters if they had more. People held signs that read, "Ban Bigotry, Not Biographies," "End Censorship," and "Open Books, Not Closed Minds." What had been planned as a brief 30-minute action turned in to a 1 1/2 hour dialogue and discussion between students and protesters.
Chelsea House, who publishes the series of banned books, donated biographies of Sappho, Marlene Dietrich, and John Maynard Keynes to Ban the Ban to show students, protesters, and the media. They are part of the series "Lives of Notable Gay Men and Lesbians" that was banned from the school library by the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD). The AUHSD claims the books were banned because they were too complex, and because students who check them out might be teased, despite a California law prohibiting the harassment of students on the basis of sexual orientation. Protesters demanded the books be returned to the library, and that the school work to end anti-gay harassment.
Activists were shocked to learn the school administration had announced on the school PA system that students were to immediately go home after school, and that they couldn't talk to protesters or the media, despite the fact that the protest took place after school and off of school property.
"If it's not on school time or property, the school has no right to tell students who they can or can't talk to," said Mira Ingram of Liberate Orange County. "I was pleasantly surprised at the response of students who said they wanted the series of books on their library shelves. Many of the students were fully aware that their school is trying to violate their civil rights."
School officials were punishing some students with Saturday School, a four hour Saturday detention, for talking to protesters and the media. Despite the threats, about 150 students joined the protest and made their own signs. One student-made sign read, "Gay is Cool," and another, "What Next, Ban the Bible?" While protesters answered questions from some students, other students spontaneously started their own chants and danced festively. Students chanted, "Hey hey, ho ho, censorship has got to go," and "Teach, don't preach."
One student told protesters she was there because her uncle was fired from his job for being gay. Many others expressed similar sentiments. Students lined up to sign a petition for the AUHSD school board demanding they return the banned books to the school library.
"What surprised me was the students' eagerness to know more about what's going on," said Queer Nation's Todd Swindell, an Orange County native who came down from San Francisco to attend the protest. "In fact, some of the most vocal supporters were straight students. They appreciated being listened to rather than being lectured to. Let the students make up their own minds."
Energized activists vowed to remain vocal on the issue until the books are returned to the Orangeview library. In addition, they are donating the biographies from Chelsea House to the Orange County Youth Drop-In Center, where youth will be free to read them without the threat of them being banned.

The first 10 minutes of SAPPHO THE VENUS OF LEBOS minus the opening credits. This is my favorite set of sequences in a row from any film of the PEPLUM genre. Directed by Pietro Francisci. I could have included it in my 30 Greatest PEPLUM Sequences but this 10 minutes is a series of sequences and not just one so I didn't include it but imo it's brilliant in the way it sets up the entire story on a visual basis, in the process continuously shifting gears between sequences, with almost no dialogue. It also goes through more PEPLUM elements/clichés in that 10 minutes than most films do in their entirety. The wonderful score by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino also helps tremendously.
This film is in limbo and no clear pristine copy is available in widescreen. I edited the English audio with this clip. I already uploaded this at my old SapphoPEPLUM Youtube channel but I'll be closing that channel soon so I re-uploaded here.
