This picture by Holland’s leading painter of humorous folklife, from the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo collection, shows an overdressed soldier being gulled by a girl in an elegant-looking house of ill repute. Walsh discusses Jan Steen’s career and other varieties of genre painting.

Sabrina Meloni (restaurator) en Ariane van Suchtelen (conservator) van het Mauritshuis vertellen over de start van het Oeuvreonderzoek rondom Jan Steen. Veel werken van de kunstenaar uit Leiden zijn niet gedateerd en lastig in een periode te plaatsen/groeperen. Nieuwe onderzoekstechnieken maken het mogelijk om op een bijzondere manier naar de werken van Steen te kijken. In samenwerking met Ralph Haswell van Shell Nederland wordt het oeuvre in kaart gebracht.

Jan Havickszoon Steen (Leiden, 1625 of 1626 -- aldaar, begraven 23 februari 1679) was een kunstschilder uit Nederland in de 17e eeuw, de tijd van de Nederlandse barokke schilderkunst. Zijn werk is van ongelijke kwaliteit, maar mensenkennis, humor en uitbundig kleurgebruik zijn belangrijke kenmerken van zijn werk. Het dagelijks leven was Jan Steens belangrijkste onderwerp. Veel van de taferelen waren levendig, zelfs chaotisch en wellustig. Dergelijke taferelen waren zo kenmerkend dat een huishouden van Jan Steen een veelgebruikt Nederlands gezegde is geworden.

Jan Steen-Dutch Golden Age Painter(Leiden NL)
"Jan Havickszoon Steen was probably born in the year 1626 in Leiden (The Netherlands). Like his even more famous contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen attended the Latin school in Leiden. He received his painterly education from Nicolaes Knupfer, a German painter of historical and figurative scenes in Utrecht. Influences of Knupfer can be found in Steen's use of composition and colour. In 1648 Jan Steen joined the Sint Lucas Guild of painters at Leiden. Another source of inspiration was Adriaen van Ostade, painter of rural scenes, who lived in Haarlem. Whether Steen actually studied with Ostade is not known.
Steen then moved into the house of landscape painter Jan van Goyen in The Hague, and married van Goyen's daughter Margriet. Both Jan's worked together for five years. In 1654 Steen moved to Delft, where he ran brewery De Roscam without much success. He lived in Warmond from 1656/1657 till 1660 and in Haarlem from 1660 till 1670 in which period he was especially productive. In 1670, after the death of his wife in 1669 and his father in 1670, Steen moved back to Leiden, where he stayed the rest of his life. Still in 1670 he married again, with Maria van Egmont, who gave him two children. In 1672 Steen, son of a brewer himself, opened a tavern. In 1674 he became president of the Sint Lucas Guild.
Daily life was the most important theme throughout Jan Steen's paintings, but he did not shy from other themes: he also painted historical, mythological and religious scenes, portraits, still-lives and natural scenes. His portraits of children are famous. He is also well known for his mastery of light and attention to detail, most notably in textiles. Steen produced about 800 paintings.
Jan Steen's work was valued much by contemporaries and as a result he was reasonably well paid for his work. He did not have any students, but his work proved a source of inspiration for many painters.

Jan Steen heeft ongeveer 400 schilderijen gemaakt.
Zijn grootste onderwerp was het dagelijkse leven. Sommige taferelen waren zo kenmerkend dat "een huishouden van Jan Steen" een gezegde is geworden in de Nederlandse taal.
Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial theme.
Many of the scenes he portrayed are lively to the point of chaos and lustfulness, even so much that a Jan Steen household, meaning a messy scene, became a Dutch proverb (een huishouden van Jan Steen).
Subtle hints in his paintings seem to suggest that Steen meant to warn the vieuwer rather then invite him/her to copy this behaviour.
Many of Steen's paintings bear references to old Dutch proverbs or literature.
He often used members of his family as a model.
Jan Steen painted also quite a few selfportraits, in which he showed no tendency of vanity.
Psychological insight, sence of humor and abundance of colour are marks of his trade.

Jan Havickszoon Steen (c. 1626 – buried February 3, 1679) was a Dutch genre painter of the 17th century (also known as the Dutch Golden Age). Psychological insight, sense of humour and abundance of colour are marks of his trade.
Steen was born in Leiden, where his well-to-do, Catholic family were brewers and ran the tavern The Red Halbert for two generations. Like his even more famous contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen attended the Latin school and became a student in Leiden. He received his painterly education from Nicolaes Knupfer (1603–1660), a German painter of historical and figurative scenes in Utrecht. Influences of Knupfer can be found in Steen's use of composition and colour. Another source of inspiration were Adriaen van Ostade and Isaac van Ostade, painters of rural scenes, who lived in Haarlem. Whether Steen actually studied with Ostade is not known.
In 1648 Jan Steen and Gabriel Metsu founded the painters' Guild of Saint Luke at Leiden. Soon after he became an assistant to the renowned landscape painter Jan van Goyen and moved into his house on the Bierkade in The Hague. On Oct 3, 1649 he married van Goyen's daughter Margriet, with whom he would have eight children. Steen worked with his father-in-law until 1654, when he moved to Delft, where he ran brewery De Roscam (The Curry Comb) (or De Slang (The Snake)) without much success. After the explosion in Delft in 1654 the art market was depressed, but Steen painted his famous A Burgomaster of Delft and his daughter. It does not seem to be clear if this painting should be called a portrait or a genre work.

Jan Havickszoon Steen (Leiden, 1625 of 1626 -- aldaar, begraven 23 februari 1679) was een kunstschilder uit Nederland in de 17e eeuw, de tijd van de Nederlandse barokke schilderkunst. Zijn werk is van ongelijke kwaliteit, maar mensenkennis, humor en uitbundig kleurgebruik zijn belangrijke kenmerken van zijn werk. Het dagelijks leven was Jan Steens belangrijkste onderwerp. Veel van de taferelen waren levendig, zelfs chaotisch en wellustig. Dergelijke taferelen waren zo kenmerkend dat een huishouden van Jan Steen een veelgebruikt Nederlands gezegde is geworden. Jan Steen-Dutch Golden Age Painter(Leiden NL) "Jan Havickszoon Steen was probably born in the year 1626 in Leiden (The Netherlands). Like his even more famous contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen attended the Latin school in Leiden. He received his painterly education from Nicolaes Knupfer, a German painter of historical and figurative scenes in Utrecht. Influences of Knupfer can be found in Steen's use of composition and colour. In 1648 Jan Steen joined the Sint Lucas Guild of painters at Leiden. Another source of inspiration was Adriaen van Ostade, painter of rural scenes, who lived in Haarlem. Whether Steen actually studied with Ostade is not known. Steen then moved into the house of landscape painter Jan van Goyen in The Hague, and married van Goyen's daughter Margriet. B... -

Jan Havickszoon Steen (1626- 1679) Jan Steen heeft ongeveer 400 schilderijen gemaakt. Zijn grootste onderwerp was het dagelijkse leven. Sommige taferelen waren zo kenmerkend dat "een huishouden van Jan Steen" een gezegde is geworden in de Nederlandse taal. Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial theme. Many of the scenes he portrayed are lively to the point of chaos and lustfulness, even so much that a Jan Steen household, meaning a messy scene, became a Dutch proverb (een huishouden van Jan Steen). Subtle hints in his paintings seem to suggest that Steen meant to warn the vieuwer rather then invite him/her to copy this behaviour. Jan Steen (74) is naast fameus beeldhouwer of beeldbouwer - zoals hij zelf liever zegt- en performer ook een mens met een warm hart en visie. Kunstschilder Herman Tulp bezocht hem in zijn woning in Den Andel. Jan anno 2012: hij is onder andere bezig met geheimzinnige kijkdozen voor een geplande expositie in Museum De Buitenplaats, waar ook zijn indrukwekkende kostuums en hoeden die hij voor de Strawinsky Manifestatie maakte te zien waren. In 1654 Steen moved to Delft, where he ran brewery De Roscam without much success. He lived in Warmond from 1656/1657 till 1660 and in Haarlem from 1660 till 1670 in which period he was especially productive. In 1670, after the death of his wife in 1669 and his father in 1670, Steen moved back to Leiden, where he stayed the rest of his life. Still in 1670 he married again, with Maria van Egmont, who gave him two children. In 1672 Steen, son of a brewer himself, opened a tavern. In 1674 he became president of the Sint Lucas Guild.
Daily life was the most important theme throughout Jan Steen's paintings, but he did not shy from other themes: he also painted historical, mythological and religious scenes, portraits, still-lives and natural scenes. His portraits of children are famous. He is also well known for his mastery of light and attention to detail, most notably in textiles. Steen produced about 800 paintings.
Jan Steen's work was valued much by contemporaries and as a result he was reasonably well paid for his work. He did not have any students, but his work proved a source of inspiration for many painters.

Zijn grootste onderwerp was het dagelijkse leven. Sommige taferelen waren zo kenmerkend dat "een huishouden van Jan Steen" een gezegde is geworden in de Nederlandse taal.
Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial theme.
Many of the scenes he portrayed are lively to the point of chaos and lustfulness, even so much that a Jan Steen household, meaning a messy scene, became a Dutch proverb (een huishouden van Jan Steen).
Subtle hints in his paintings seem to suggest that Steen meant to warn the vieuwer rather then invite him/her to copy this behaviour.
Many of Steen's paintings bear references to old Dutch proverbs or literature.
He often used members of his family as a model.
Jan Steen painted also quite a few selfportraits, in which he showed no tendency of vanity.
Psychological insight, sence of humor and abundance of colour are marks of his trade.
