This video is LONG! It was made for the sole purpose of HELPING buyers who have asked me questions about their radios and frequencies. I have answered many here. Also, I talk about the "signal bouncers" and tower invaders" and WHY I DO NOT program radios trunked! Some of you may not like the answers I give. To them, my response is that I don't give a flying fuck. Harsh, yes, but its for their own good.
I have loyal viewers (they know who they are and many are customers) and they know what I am talking about here. This OBVIOUSLY does not include them. I aim this to the radio users who are trying to find ways to listen in to encrypted transmissions without the proper clearances, as well as those who try to affiliate to networks who have absolutely no business doing so and the legal ramifications of affiliating to a trunked and encrypted network by hacking in, or attempting to.
I also address (OTAKC) which is an acronym for "Over-The-Air-Kill-Command" that dispatch consoles are equipped with that enable them to send a remote "kill command" to unauthorized users of two-way radios that will essentially "brick" your radio, rendering it useless without sending it in (and answering a LOT of questions as to just WHY this happened). You can be prosecuted in a Federal Court of Law for affiliating without authorization to use the networks.
This video also addresses the fellows who try to break into a trunked system that is encrypted and try to listen in to encrypted conversations. Two Federal laws were passed in the mid 1990's prohibiting listeners from doing this sort of thing. It falls under the Federal Wire Tap Law.
Below are links for buyers to use as tools to identify the frequencies currently in use in their respective counties, both TX and RX. This includes Public Safety agencies. It is for reference ONLY and is ONLY to be used in a legal manner. If you decide to use it illegally, you can't say I didn't tell you so.

The transmitting distance of a two way radio set is an important factor to consider when investing in one. The good news is that they can communicate over a multitude of different ranges depending on the type that is bought, so, with a little research, anyone will almost certainly find one that fits his or her needs.
The first thing to understand about two way radio range is that most of the commercially available ones operate on frequencies that travel exclusively in straight lines. This means that one will get different results depending on the area in which it is used. Large, metallic objects will block the radio's signal, although other things like walls will not affect it. The frequency may also bounce off of things like trees or buildings, so maximum range is greatly influenced by its environment.
Now, assuming that the radios are operating in a wide, open space, the true maximum two-way radio range is calculated by factoring in the curvature of the earth. Because the radio's signal travels in a straight line and the earth is curved, eventually the radio's signal will travel off into the horizon, through the atmosphere, and right into space. The point at which this happens depends upon the height of the antenna. Raising the height of the antenna would extend the line of sight and thus the maximum range of the radios. If one could position his antenna on top of a mountain, he would greatly increase his transmitting distance. Of course, few people are capable of doing that.
Power output is another thing that can affect two way radio range. If a radio is not powerful enough, it will cut down on the maximum range determined from the information in the last paragraph. The more power (in watts) a radio has, the farther its transmitting distance. However if the radio is battery powered, those extra watts will run down the charge quickly, so be careful!
The last major factor in two way radio range is frequency. The two most popular frequencies for this application are VHF and UHF with neither being inherently better or worse. VHF has a very low frequency and can thus transmit radio waves over longer distances, however, UHF may be better in more crowded areas because it can pass through metal buildings more easily. With all of these thoughts in mind, it is easier to decide on the technology one needs to use two-way radio.

A two-way radio is a radio that can both transmit and receive (a transceiver), unlike a broadcast receiver which only receives content. A two-way radio (transceiver) allows the operator to have a conversation with other similar radios operating on the same radio frequency (channel). Two-way radios are available in mobile, stationary base and hand-held portable configurations. Hand-held radios are often called walkie-talkies or handie-talkies.
Two-way radio systems usually operate in a half-duplex mode; that is, the operator can talk, or he can listen, but not at the same time. A push-to-talk or Press To Transmit button activates the transmitter; when it is released the receiver is active. A mobile phone or cellular telephone is an example of a two-way radio that both transmits and receives at the same time (called full-duplex mode). It uses two different radio frequencies (channels) to carry the two directions of the conversation simultaneously.
Installation of receivers and transmitters at the same fixed location allowed exchange of messages wirelessly. As early as 1907, two-way telegraphy traffic across the Atlantic Ocean was commercially available. By 1912 commercial and military ships carried both transmitters and receivers, allowing two-way communication in close to real-time with a ship that was out of sight of land.

This video is LONG! It was made for the sole purpose of HELPING buyers who have asked me questions about their radios and frequencies. I have answered many here. Also, I talk about the "signal bouncers" and tower invaders" and WHY I DO NOT program radios trunked! Some of you may not like the answers I give. To them, my response is that I don't give a flying fuck. Harsh, yes, but its for their own good. I have loyal viewers (they know who they are and many are customers) and they know what I am talking about here. This OBVIOUSLY does not include them. I aim this to the radio users who are trying to find ways to listen in to encrypted transmissions without the proper clearances, as well as those who try to affiliate to networks who have absolutely no business doing so and the legal ramifications of affiliating to a trunked and encrypted network by hacking in, or attempting to. I also address (OTAKC) which is an acronym for "Over-The-Air-Kill-Command" that dispatch consoles are equipped with that enable them to send a remote "kill command" to unauthorized users of two-way radios that will essentially "brick" your radio, rendering it useless without sending it in (and answering a LOT of questions as to just WHY this happened). You can be prosecuted in a Federal Court of Law for affiliating without authorization to use the networks. This video also addresses the fellows who try to break into a trunked system that is encrypted and try to listen in to encrypted conversations. Two Federal laws were passed in the mid 1990's prohibiting listeners from doing this sort of thing. It falls under the Federal Wire Tap Law. Below are links for buyers to use as tools to identify the frequencies currently in use in their respective counties, both TX and RX. This includes Public Safety agencies. It is for reference ONLY and is ONLY to be used in a legal manner. If you decide to use it illegally, you can't say I didn't tell you so. The transmitting distance of a two way radio set is an important factor to consider when investing in one. The good news is that they can communicate over a multitude of different ranges depending on the type that is bought, so, with a little research, anyone will almost certainly find one that fits his or her needs. The first thing to understand about two way radio range is that most of the commercially available ones operate on frequencies that travel exclusively in straight lines. This means that one will get different results depending on the area in which it is used. Large, metallic objects will block the radio's signal, although other things like walls will not affect it. The frequency may also bounce off of things like trees or buildings, so maximum range is greatly influenced by its environment. Now, assuming that the radios are operating in a wide, open space, the true maximum two-way radio range is calculated by factoring in the curvature of the earth. Because the radio's signal travels in a straight line and the earth is curved, eventually the radio's signal will travel off into the horizon, through the atmosphere, and right into space. The point at which this happens depends upon the height of the antenna. Raising the height of the antenna would extend the line of sight and thus the maximum range of the radios. If one could position his antenna on top of a mountain, he would greatly increase his transmitting distance. Of course, few people are capable of doing that. Power output is another thing that can affect two way radio range. If a radio is not powerful enough, it will cut down on the maximum range determined from the information in the last paragraph. The more power (in watts) a radio has, the farther its transmitting distance. However if the radio is battery powered, those extra watts will run down the charge quickly, so be careful! The last major factor in two way radio range is frequency. The two most popular frequencies for this application are VHF and UHF with neither being inherently better or worse. VHF has a very low frequency and can thus transmit radio waves over longer distances, however, UHF may be better in more crowded areas because it can pass through metal buildings more easily. With all of these thoughts in mind, it is easier to decide on the technology one needs to use two-way radio. -

Also, I talk about the "signal bouncers" and tower invaders" and WHY I DO NOT program radios trunked! Some of you may not like the answers I give. To them, my response is that I don't give a flying fuck. Harsh, yes, but its for their own good.
I have loyal viewers (they know who they are and many are customers) and they know what I am talking about here. This OBVIOUSLY does not include them. I aim this to the radio users who are trying to find ways to listen in to encrypted transmissions without the proper clearances, as well as those who try to affiliate to networks who have absolutely no business doing so and the legal ramifications of affiliating to a trunked and encrypted network by hacking in, or attempting to.
I also address (OTAKC) which is an acronym for "Over-The-Air-Kill-Command" that dispatch consoles are equipped with that enable them to send a remote "kill command" to unauthorized users of two-way radios that will essentially "brick" your radio, rendering it useless without sending it in (and answering a LOT of questions as to just WHY this happened). You can be prosecuted in a Federal Court of Law for affiliating without authorization to use the networks.
This video also addresses the fellows who try to break into a trunked system that is encrypted and try to listen in to encrypted conversations. Two Federal laws were passed in the mid 1990's prohibiting listeners from doing this sort of thing. It falls under the Federal Wire Tap Law.

The transmitting distance of a two way radio set is an important factor to consider when investing in one. The good news is that they can communicate over a multitude of different ranges depending on the type that is bought, so, with a little research, anyone will almost certainly find one that fits his or her needs.
The first thing to understand about two way radio range is that most of the commercially available ones operate on frequencies that travel exclusively in straight lines. This means that one will get different results depending on the area in which it is used. Large, metallic objects will block the radio's signal, although other things like walls will not affect it. The frequency may also bounce off of things like trees or buildings, so maximum range is greatly influenced by its environment.
Now, assuming that the radios are operating in a wide, open space, the true maximum two-way radio range is calculated by factoring in the curvature of the earth. Because the radio's signal travels in a straight line and the earth is curved, eventually the radio's signal will travel off into the horizon, through the atmosphere, and right into space. The point at which this happens depends upon the height of the antenna. Raising the height of the antenna would extend the line of sight and thus the maximum range of the radios. If one could position his antenna on top of a mountain, he would greatly increase his transmitting distance. Of course, few people are capable of doing that.
Power output is another thing that can affect two way radio range. If a radio is not powerful enough, it will cut down on the maximum range determined from the information in the last paragraph. The more power (in watts) a radio has, the farther its transmitting distance. However if the radio is battery powered, those extra watts will run down the charge quickly, so be careful!
The last major factor in two way radio range is frequency. The two most popular frequencies for this application are VHF and UHF with neither being inherently better or worse. VHF has a very low frequency and can thus transmit radio waves over longer distances, however, UHF may be better in more crowded areas because it can pass through metal buildings more easily. With all of these thoughts in mind, it is easier to decide on the technology one needs to use two-way radio.
