Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction, to help a person change and overcome problems in desired ways. Psychotherapy aims to increase each individual's well-being and mental health, to resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions, and to improve relationships and social functioning. Certain psychotherapies are considered evidence-based for treating some diagnosed mental disorders.
There are over a thousand different named psychotherapies, some being minor variations while others are based on very different conceptions of psychology, ethics (how to live) or techniques. Most involve one-to-one sessions between client and therapist but some are conducted with groups, including families. Therapists may be mental health professionals or come from a variety of other backgrounds, and depending on the jurisdiction may be legally regulated, voluntarily regulated or unregulated.
Sigmund Freud (/ˈfrɔɪd/;German: [ˈziːkmʊnt ˈfʁɔʏt]; born Sigismund Schlomo Freud; 6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Freud was born to Galician Jewish parents in the Moravian town of Freiberg, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Freud qualified as a doctor of medicine in 1881 at the University of Vienna, and then carried out research into cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy at the Vienna General Hospital. Upon completing his habilitation in 1885, he was appointed a docent in neuropathology and became an affiliated professor in 1902.
In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the mechanisms of repression as well as for elaboration of his theory of the unconscious. Freud postulated the existence of libido, an energy with which mental processes and structures are invested and which generates erotic attachments, and a death drive, the source of compulsive repetition, hate, aggression and neurotic guilt. In his later work Freud developed a wide-ranging interpretation and critique of religion and culture.

In this video we introduce existential psychotherapy, which proposes that many psychological disorders are the result of the individual’s inability to reconcile themselves to ultimate concerns such as death, meaninglessness, freedom, and isolation. =================================================== Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/academyofideas Recommended Readings: Existential Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom - http://amzn.to/2bzoc9C (affiliate link) Get the transcript http://academyofideas.com/2016/08/existential-psychotherapy-death-freedom-isolation-meaninglessness/ ===================================================
How does psychotherapy work; what a psychotherapist does to create a good session. http://www.marksehl.com/psychotherapy-interventions.html Fear, judgement, shame and parent's needs vs child's needs. Intruding on patients, defenses are necessary, countertransference, what was former treatment like?, setting fees and frequency, what is a well conducted first session. "It is joy to be hidden and disaster not to be found", what would you like to do when you grow up (is this a genuine question?).

All in all
I ramble slowly
down the back streets where they know me
All in all
I felt degraded
it left me less than stimulated
All in all
I sowed my treasures
and sold them for the empty pleasures
All in all
I felt degraded
All in all
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
I woke up and found out that I was
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
I woke up and found out that I wasAll in all
I painted pictures
with fading light and fading fixtures
All in all
the mystery's over
I rolled it with a four leaf clover
All in all
the clouds were forming
around the castles I was storming
All in all
the mystery's over
All in all
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
I woke up and found out that I was
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
I woke up and found out that I wasAll in all
I left my powers
in a bed of bushy flowers
All in all
I took the credit
(and now I'd rather soon forget it)
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
I woke up and found out that I was
I was the mystery killer
I was the mercury filler
I laid down and wished I was dead
