A side boy is a member of an even-numbered group of seamen posted in two rows at the quarterdeck when a visiting dignitary boards or leaves the ship, historically to help (or even hoist) him aboard, presently as a ceremonial guard of honour, in a ceremony known as tending the Side. Side boys are instructed by the piping of the Boatswain's Mate. The Quarterdeck being a ceremonial location on a weatherdeck of the ship, usually at the location of the accommodation (boarding) ladder or brow.
Since 1843, United States Navy regulations have stipulated the number of Side boys according to the protocollary importance of the guests, which are similarly entitled to other honors; viz., the tune and number of ruffles and flourishes and the number of cannon fired as a salute. The side boy function may be performed by either male or female members of the ship's complement.

Broughton
Ronnie's arrived with his Radio
He carries it everywhere he goes,
And talk about knowing your airwaves
...Ronnie'll name a few
Nicholas came with his cockatoo... too,
Which is really a pigeon but his heart would stop tickin'
if he ever knew.
'Cos everybody needs somebody (sometime)
I'm still needing you
CHORUS
I've been spun and spin-dried
but still the tears fall from my eyes.
I've been spun but I'm cry-dyed
do me a favour and wring me.
I've been spun and spin-dried
but still the tears fall from my eyes.
I've been spun but I'm cry-dyed
do me a favour and wring me... sometime
Little Linda's got a way with men
And so far she's got away with about nine or ten
'Cos everybody needs somebody (sometime)
I'm still needing you
CHORUS
I've been spun and spin-dried
but still the tears fall from my eyes.
I've been spun but I'm cry-dyed
do me a favour and wring me.
I've been spun and spin-dried
but still the tears fall from my eyes.
I've been spun but I'm cry-dyed
Got myself a secret in a briefcase
Desperation rendezvous and don't be late
Mata Hari maiden, milky silky stocking
Freezen' war lolly, going iron curtain shopping.
Civil service sandwiches and there's no bar
I'd much prefer an ounce or two of caviare
There's a plane just leaving, it's gonna take me there
Something tells me that Moscow's hip this time of year
Chorus
State secrets straight from my heart
Aaah they make you shiver
State secrets straight from my heart
Aaah C'mon deliver.
Take myself a long awaited holiday
One with all advantages of extra pay
Make a Kremlin cutie for to be my comrade
And if the streets are paved with roubles then I'II stay
Chorus
State secrets straight from my heart
Aaah they make you shiver
State secrets straight from myheart
Around the singles bar, playing parlour games
Marriane plays kiss and run and waves her welcomes again.
She's way out after dark, painted for the part,
To steal some young man's week away and rob him of his
Heart.
To tease the lonelv brute with the dark blue tatoo
They choose the longer route up to his room
And leaning an the light, pursuing dirty nights
And eagle out on bail surveys his nails.
CHORUS
Young men gone west for a city roof
Young men gone west for their gin and vermouth
Young men gone west, it's young men for the boys
Leaving the next for their jewels and toys
Young men gone west from unhappy homes
Leading the way for the lonely ones.
Now Harry's lost weekend is trembling to a close,
He's drowned his dreams in nicotine and pawned his
Overcoat
He stumbles to the stairs, disturbs a love affair,
He shuffles as they stare and begs to be elsewhere
But can he claim a willing ear before they disappear
He's sure a lover's time worth a dime.
CHORUS
Young men gone west into kisses and crime
Seeing the stairway and wanting to, climb
Young men gone west for the rodeo, mistaking strangers
For people they know
Young men gone west, just wasting their days
(Mason, Thomas)
Speechless
I wish there were something to say
I drank too much of you
And now you've gone to my head
I'm laughing like a fool
You leave me
Speechless
And words I'm rehearsing all day
Are caught up in the traffic
Getting lost in their way
They're always left unsaid
You leave me
Speechless
Restless
I count every step to the phone
And when I get the nerve to dial
Then you're never home
So here I am alone
And feeling restless
I wanted to say
You're unbelievable
But then I got caught up
On my own reply
If I asked you to stay around
To hear what I might say
Would I see the answers in your eyes
Speechless
I look for the right things to say
Whoever stole my dictionary
Tore out the page
It happens every day
You leave me
Speechless
Speechless
I know that it's all down to you
You see I'm not responsible
I've met my full moon
There's nothing I can do
You leave me
(Mason , Slamer, Ward)
Leave my keys in the door
Throw my bills on the floor
A note by the bed was all that se said
You couldn't stay, your leaving me
Take the phone off the wall
Tell your friends when they call
That we're indisposed, and this house is closed
From now on, you're leaving me
You're leaving me, with no good-byes
I want to die, and I don't know why you're
Leaving me with lonely nights
My eyes on the door, my face on the floor
You're leaving me, and life goes on , night after day
And time drags by real slowly non
How d'you spend your weekend
I stayed over with friends
And talked until four, slept on the floor
I'm so happy lying here, reclining in this easy chair,
Wond'rin' what the hell could go wrong.
My mind's confused, my body tired,
I wonder if I'm still alive,
Has Anybody here please got the time
Oh no, the time
(Chorus)
Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what
A night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night, Ooh what a night,
Now the morning's drawing near, my head she thump from the beer, And
The telephone she ring (who's there?) My God that typist that I floored I
Must have drunk more than I thought, Can anybody here please show me
The door Oh no, you want more?
(MasonThomasSlamer)
I saw him selling scenes from illegal dreams
The dude with an eye for a dime
Michael, my disciple...
Then there was John the faithless one
He was a sunny side boy on a money call
Colossal apostle...
They found us in a tent by the river Trent
We stood in the stream, killing bream
An old-time revival...
Chorus
Why don'cha!
Take a walk on the water, take a walk on the water,
Take a walk on the water...Chilly, chilly cold.
Take a walk on the water, take a walk on the water,
Take a walk on the water...Chilly, chilly.
Hey Jude with Your eyes giving guilt to mine
You caught me turning the water to wine
Water Divining
In a massive country pad
Slowly going mad, gimme a banner headline
And a space in "TIME" "The boy has the Power."
Chorus
So here we had three believers in me
With virgin white robes and mystical strobes
Mazuma time with a neon sign
Forget the tent now the money's spent.
Too hot but not too hot to care
I'm sitting pretty by my Frigidaire
And it's good to breathe the midnight air
One more mosquito bite before we get (before we get)
To bed
I'm on the payroll but I'm off the street
You can't disturb a fool's reality
When there's a place i n town where they don't even
Serve you or me
We'd have to sit outside and drink all night to rescue
The economy
Up in the Eighties, where it's hard to breathe
Up in the Eighties, and it's harder to leave you alone
Too close to Heaven to believe I'm here at all
Must be the weather
I got no more use for the radio
The whole world ended just an hour ago
And there's a lot of people waking up with egg in their
Eyes
We'll charge the refugees a grand apiece to camp out in
Our paradise
Up in the Eighties, where it's hard to breathe
Up in the Eighties, and it's harder to leave you alone
Too close to Heaven to believe I'm here at all
Must be the weather
(Up) in the Eighties, where it's harder to breathe
In the Eighties, and it's harder to leave you alone
Close to Heaven to believe I'm here at all
Applying her make-up and wanting to wake up, She
Slips into something tight. With rouge on her Ace,
Lipstick in place She dresses to Ace the light:
Humming a tune and leaving her room She's ready to
Brave the night.
(Chorus) The world loves a dancer, moving in time
The world loves a dancer, the moon in her eyes. The
World loves a dancer, step into the light.
Through living with losers the tools and the boozers
Are sleeping outside her door. They're all Marion
Brandos with novelty tangos Who polish their shoes on
The floor. With Lavender Lovers who laugh under-
Covers And dance when the crowd calls more.
(Chorus) The world loves a dancer, moving in time
The world loves a dancer, the moon in her eyes The
World loves a dancer, step into the light.
Just for a moment, caught up in romance, She
Silently takes the floor. She's dancing a slow
One, partnering no-one And answering all the
Applause.
(Chorus) The world loves a dancer, moving in time.
The world loves a dancer, the moon in her eyes.
(Mason, Broughton)
A kindly word for friends and strangers almost anyone she meets
A lonely house at the end of the road full of silly memories
And when the locals laugh at her she turns a blind eye to it all
She sees the irony and so what no-one really meant it
A grey old lady, touched and lonesome, just a little bit eccentric
But no-one sees the secrets hidden in a diary stowed beneath the stairs
Chorus
And she sat that night in her chair by the fire hearing his violin
Tears appeared and burned her cheeks as he caressed every string
As the dawn arrives to hurt her eyes the coals are growing dim
And when the room grows cold she still recalls every inch of him.
Germaine was a leggy lady, barely old enough to know how
To hold the right knife at the table it was difficult but somehow
She caught the eye of an evening pirate and he sailed his way into her heart
Her Valentino played violin till it was well into the night
Enjoyed her evening oh so much although she never ate a bite
So Cinderella lost her slipper to a Lilting, Latin Gigolo.
Chorus
.And he stood that night by the tableside playing his violin
Tears arrived in Germaine's eyes as he caressed every string
As the day appeared with the tables cleared, she was still there listening
And she rose to go with her eyes still closed, but she paused to glance at him.
There was no-one there but her and as she sadly took her fur, she heard...
A little weary eyed, but smiling she wandered home...
Alone.
Then every evening she came back to her table by the window
(Mason, Thomas, Freise-Green)
Distant voice calling station-to-station
Sounding lonely like a prison cell
We embrace for the final celebration
But we break at the sound of the bell
Like two heavies walking back to their corners
So beat up they can't see themselves
It's been good to go down, spend an hour on the canvas
But you're up at the sound of the bell
It's a heartbeat away, a sound you know very well
Listen to the sound of the bell
In a world full of rumors
It's a jungle everybody yells
The sound of the bell
See the braves wearing names on their sweaters
Holding candles over wishing wells
The scent that you smelt on the back of a letter
I had words with Rudy down on the lot
He couldn't help me out, it seems he forgot
What my name was, he was one of my many shoulders
Growing cold
Nothing to cry on or rely on for a friend
CHORUS
They call me the runaroud, happily holding her hand
The best kept man in town, lead your lady around,
Runaround.
I recall when half the world held her breath
The letters of her name hung in mid-air
But I woke up to a nightmare, and she follows me around,
Running gauntlets, staring haunted at the ground.
CHORUS (repeat)
Hang around in Romanoff's to be seen,
Friends pass by like I've never been.
I remember party night, Halloween,
I was Tambourlaine and she was my queen
But the champagne and the wine stains and the friends
Who waived goodby,
Only echo as the wind blows, through the chandelier.
Desperate Dan was a solitary man, a loner
He had a girl but I guess he'd just outgrown her
It's hard to dig but he made his big decision
Became the man who ate his car - Collision !!
They spread the news to every local station
Come see the guy who swallows cars, - Sensation !!
CHORUS
They said he couldn't digest it, but he just went ahead
And undressed it
Mechanic in a panic, oh what a state.
He ate his meal full of steel from a plate.
Munched his way into a million hearts as he ate the tyres
And the spare parts.
Some guys do anything to be seen, on the screen,
What a dream, it's obscene.
Now it's clear that his career took a wrong turn,
The Golden Gate on a dinner date,
Heartburn, heartburn, heartburn
He's left the earth in a multi-berth Apollo
Venus and Mars, the rest of the stars to swallow.
I heard that you get tougher with every reel
The kids say you got fingers made of steel
They say your belt gets blacker by the hour
I know you like your victims sweet and sour.
Watch out ... He don't need no pistol in his hand
Watch out ...With so much bread and twice as many fans.
Watch out ... He scowls at you and then he chops you down
Watch out ... He's the seventh son of the holy seventh Dan.
Hap - Ki - Do, Hap - Ki - Do . . .
(He ... He's the kid, here he comes)
So you embrace the beauty and the beast
A wisdom given to you from the East.
And there your masters taught you where it's at
The noble art of breaking someone's back.
Watch out ... He don't need no pistol in his hand
Watch out ... With so much bread and twice as many fans.
Watch out ... He scowls at you and then he chops you down
Watch out .., He's the seventh son of the holy seventh Dan.
Hap - Ki - Do, Hap - Ki - Do ...
(He ... He's the kid, here he comes)
The day the Earth caught fire
We stood outside the world was laughing
And in the city square
They cast umbrellas to the sky
The sun above my head was burning greedy red
The horns began to blow "Three Cheers for jericho"
The first evacuee
I was headed for the sea, I saw them
The roadside refugees
The boys with bloody knees who waved
Abandoned cars that lay too tired to drive away
"A World in Flames Today" was all the papers
Had to say
Run for your life (The Earth's caught fire)
Run for your life (The Earth's caught fire)
Run, run, run
Run for your life (The Earth's on fire)
Run for your life (The Earth's on fire)
Run, run, run
The streetcar prophet said,
"You thought that God was dead-I warned you
The sinners and the saved
They fell down to their knees and prayed
Believers held their breath and stoned a witch to death
The leaders and the led said "Blow the bloody
Reds away!"
Run for your life (The Earth's caught fire)
Run for your life (The Earth's caught fire)
Run, run, run
Run for your life (The Earth's on fire)
Run for your life (The Earth's on fire)
There's been a lot of talk about you momma
About your shady, entertaining ways
How late at night, providing bedside drama
Is helping you to sleep more in the day.
Think of the shame, you'll never get to heaven
Although it's heaven here right by your side
Your little ways so devious and clever
Help me forget how much I love my wife.
CHORUS
She's got style, blowing me hot then cold.
She's got style, dress falling off her shoulder, like a child,
Making me drop my guard as ooh, ooh, she closing the door
She's got style, she getting rich in sin,
She's got style, she gonna take us all, a certain smile,
Recling with Garbo's eyes as ooh, ooh,
Why she leaving me asking for more?
And as I leave there's one more in the doorway,
He hangs his coat as you relieve him of his hat,
So for an hour you'll swear to love him always (always)
While you're leaving me with my feet scraping the mat.
CHORUS
She' s got style, blowing me hot then cold
She's got style, dress falling off her shoulder like a child,
Making me drop my guard as ooh, ooh, she closing the door
She's got style, she getting rich in sin,
She's got style, she gonna take us all, a certain smile,
Well it's another rainy night, here in my hometown,
And the rain beats down on the stone surround
Of the prison grounds
Well you can raise a smile but lower your eyes
When you pass by
You'd surely understand if you were the man
Doing time
I guess it's fair to say I had more than my share that day And
You know, I've been told all prison bars are closed
(Chorus) So won't you raise your glass and get drunk
For me 'Cos I'm the fool who drank too much, you see.
So won't you set them up unselfishly Please raise your
Glass to foolish me.
When I left the factory gate I was perfectly straight and sober But I
Stopped for a short one which led to a long one and murder Well he
Was six feet five, about twice my size, but I was crazy Because I heard
Him say, my wife, in the day was no lady.
I guess it's fair to say
I had more than my share that day
And you know, I've been told all prison bars are closed
(Chorus) So won't you raise your glass and drink
To me 'Cos I'm the fool who left her alone you see.
So won't you set them up unselfishly Please raise
It's one after two, still glued to the tube
And I'm missing you.
One night by the phone, two rings and you're gone
And I' m back here sleeping alone.
CHORUS
Why should I worry? All's well and it's fair.
I'm only a number, who cares?
What Flood's one after two?
It's one after two, is it afternoon?
I can't ask my room.
I' m happy here on my own, will someone please
Leave me alone?
I reach the doorway,
But the milkman's gone.
CHORUS
Why should I worry? All's well and it's fair.
I' m only a number, who cares?
Turning pages. glancing through the classified
The whole night's sleep was in my eyes
Spilling coffee on my shoes, I noticed you
Saw it all in black and white: "The Broadway Girl
Makes Good Tonight"
Then some old friend decides to phone
To ask me how I got to know
Read it in the New York Times
It was a smile I recognized
With an unfamiliar- name and another fool by your side
And it really hurt my pride
Cause it's a bitch to realize
You're only second prize, just another New York time
Sunday afternoon, and those old movies make me cry
I'II never know the reasons why
Don't know why I waste my time recalling lines
From a letter by the bed, much better left unread
But old times come on back again when you
Think you heard the last of them
I read it in the New York Times
It was a smile I recognized
With an unfamiliar name and another fool by your side
And it really hurt my pride
Cause it's a bitch realize
(Slamer, Ward)
I got excited
So I decided
I couldn't hide it
Oooh I guess it's time to confess
That you still light me up
Like a cigarette
I had to see you
I have to tell you
That if you wanted
Oooh to take a chance
And you'd see
That your saving a man from insanity
Do you need a little loving
Do you
Need a little loving
Tell me that you
Need a little loving
I see your nervous
You don't deserve it
I'll do the service
I'll bring you round to believe
That you can't mess around with reality
You're out of danger
I'm not a stranger
Sooner or later
Oooh I guess that you've got to know
That I'm here, I can't help
(Mason, Thomas)
Lying here beside myself with joy
I am too much for my mirror
Mama said she wished me dead
Called me bad, too bad...
I fell in love as a boy
Opened my eyes and saw my shadow
With eyebrows raised, they searched my face
And found my mate, too late...
Chorus
Don't need no audience round me I'm fond of my own company
Who wants the birds and the bees when I've always got me up my sleeve.
Who said that no mans an island surrounded by nothing but sea I
I tell you he's wrong and misguided I stand here surrounded by me.
(Breaking up the mirror, you're a sinner, you're a sinner
...Breaking up the mirror; you're a sinner you're a
Sinner. . .)
"Come down to earth" They called up to me
"We have a bed to ease your journey, crazy fools are born to bruise,
But we've the cure for both of you.
Don't need no audience round me I'm fond of my own company
Who wants the birds and the bees when I've always got
(Mason, Slamer, Ward)
A man could die of thirst
First to the bar and the last to get served
Landlord laughs
You can't get the staff these days
Guess who should walk through the door
Dressed to the nines
And looking nine more
Shows his face
Everyone in the place gets a wave
Hello M-m-m-Mr. Shoes
We love to look at you
Mr. Shoes
Solarium tan you could say he's a man
Mr. Shoes
We love to look at you
Mr. Shoes
A flick of the wrist
And a Listermint kiss
A boy could get sick of this
Sand in your face and the taste on your lips
And how come your suit looks much better
On you than me
It's so hard when you're 21
Life's too short when your nails are too long
And man I could use some of your
"Koo-Ka-Choo"
Talking; one way is an interrogation, Make it two ways,
You've got a conversation But three ways makes for a
Controntahon Ain't that rich? Because the odd number
Makes for separation And separation leads to
Fragmentation And before too long you're back to the
First situation, Ain't that a bitch? It's spinning me round
And round It's like losing your way in a crowd, Losing
Your way . . . losing your way.
(Chorus)
I feel we're moving in circles,
Ot which we have no undersv nding.
Weaving spirals but leaving no trace.
I can't get used to the strange eerie feeling
Ot moving in circles
I can't wipe the smile off my face.
Changing; one way is by revolution
When it seems the only to way to change the constitution
It takes too long for natural evolution
Ain't that rich?
(Before too long there's retribution, it's all part of the institution).
But it seems like a case of plain substitution,
When self-delusion leads to persecution
And before too long you're back to the first solution
Ain't that a bitch?
It's spinning me round and round
It's like losing your way in a crowd
Losing your way . . . losing your way.
(Chorus)
I feel we're moving in circles
Ot which we have no understanding
Weaving spirals but leaving no trace.
I can't get used to the strange eerie feeling
Of moving in circles.
They tell me he's a menace to man, this boy of mine
They say they're gonna take him away, make him tow the line
Don't take him away, Don't take him away.
A handsome and intelligent child, he's nobody's fool
They showed him round the chemistry lab and later lost the school.
Don't take him away, Don't take him away.
Chorus
Cause he's a Momma's boy, always been good to his
Momma that boy has always been good, cause
He's a Momma's boy, always been good to his
Momma that boy, he never does what he should,
We say Momma!
It's almost like holiday camp, if you're nice to me
I'm what they call your commandant, I'm here to please
Leave him with me, leave him with me.
Chorus
Cause he's a Momma's boy, always been good to his
Momma that boy has always been good, cause
He's a Momma's boy, always been good to his
Momma that boy, he never does what he should,
Who was it called this romance!
The fool with feathers in his head
A river to be sold down, the book that we both read
An empty lounge in some hotel
A fighter's thoughts before the bell
The film we first held hands at
A song that told us "No Regrets"
We asked for Mother's handouts, you ask and we shall
The money saved and money spent
The early morning arguments
Is this a modern love affair!
Is this a modern love affair!
Now if I shrug my shoulders
And only pass the time of day
It's more than wine and roses could ever say
Though I might sulk and you may brood, just thank
God it's me and you
Is this a modern love affair!
Is this a modern love affair!
The one they tell you to beware of
We asked for Mother's handouts, you ask and we shall
Get (Repeat)
Is this a modern love affair!
Is this a modern love affair!
Laying low, hiding out in Mexico
Talking to friends through the eye of a video.
Scared to loose, surrounded by fools, you're wanting lust to
Shout it out, but there's nothing left to talk about
Overhearing chance remarks, viewing movies in the dark,
And so your body stays alive but not your heart.
Losing all you are, to be a millionaire, a millionaire.
You remember how it used to be
Making you smile like a half-forgotten melody
Oh it made you laugh when people pushed for autographs,
But now it seems your yesterdays
Are pictures on a yellow page.
Now you've found your hideaway,
Heavy shutters hide the day
You've got nothing left to lose except the night.
Oh yes you've earned the right to be a millionaire,
A millionaire.
CHORUS
'Cause you're a millionaire, you've got plenty to spare.
All the time in the world to go anywhere
If you lose it all would you really care?
Would it bruise you?
'Cause it's a masquerade in many ways,
It's like wearing shades on a cloudy day
You know it don't make the weather change,
But it fools you.
`Cause you're a millionaire, a millionaire.
And as the sand runs from the glass
And they whisper "gone at last" and the
Shadows come and go
But never pass
Oh bad times never last, when you're a millionaire,
A millionaire.
Win or lose, pick and choose
You put your money in the slot
Hold and wait, hesitate
The name of the game is to have and have not
You don't know you lost till you know what you've got
Give me a quarter, a kroner, a yen
We all wind up wasted so try it again
Have you spent what you made!
Or Is your pocket heavyweight!
There's a price to be paid
Your heart in your mouth as the points start to grow
Your hands tell you stop when your head says to go
Give me a quarter, a kroner, a yen
We all wind up wasted so try it again
Machines, machines, Michael loves machines
Always waiting for the delay
Machines, machines. Michael loves machines
He's always looking for another game to play
Another game to play, another game to play
Every nerve, every bone
Is getting ready for the shot
It's a world of it's own
You don't see a thing as the crowd gathers 'round
They call out Your name but you don't hear a sound
Give me a quarter, a kroner, a yen
We'll wind up wasted so try it again
Machines, machines, Michael loves machines
Always waiting for the delay
Machines, machines. Michael loves machines
He's always looking for another game to play
Another game to play, another game to play
At the end of the day
There's two more buttons left to press
It's the ultimate game
Your video playmate is ready and set
It's so hard to choose when it's Russian Roulette
Just as London got up and New York got to bed
I was climbing the walls with a bomb in my head
No time to change it
(There was) No time to change it
No time to change It, It's the end of the
World
I was a lonely one
Holding up the end of the bar
Just one more excuse to stick around
Don't wanna travel too far
Who turned on the radio
"Here's the news and all of it's bad"--l guess it's that
Someone told me it's only the end of the World
I got up and got out, just a face in the street
( They gonna get you brother --you better run for
Cover)
Headlights cut through the night like a knife in the
Deep
(They gonna get you brother --you better run for
Cover)
No time to change it
No time to change It
No time to change it, it's the end of the World
I got a feeling I've been living at the end of the line
(They got love)
Love on every station but mine
Won't someone give me a sign
(Lord get me outta here)
Sorry if I wasted your time
Bright young woman came running from home
With her life in her hands 'cause they gave her such a
Bad time
Just a part-time lover and a full-time wife
With her heart in the dark and her head out in the
Daylight
Every small-town mother had a rumour on her lips
"I could tell she was trash from her head to her
Fingertips
Now and again when she disagreed
It was an interrupted melody
Shame was a runner for the lady to beat
It left a fire in her belly and a pain in her feet
Friends can be found on the lowest avenue
You never ask for a name when they offer you a lean-to
Now and again when she disagreed
It was an interrupted melody
Working the week-end--Tricks in the park
Over exposure--meat for the sharks
Turn out the headlights--Pull up the car
Business for pleasure--life after dark
There was Willie the Man with his wallet and charm
He left a smile on her face and a mark in her arm
And every Saturday night when the girls gave their
Best
He was hustling trade for the kid from out West
Now and again when she disagreed
Just an interrupted melody
One thing she learned was never give It away
They can take what they want just as long as they pay
Now all that remains of that small-town life
Is a letter from home and a look in her eye
Now and again when she disagreed
It was an interrupted melody
Working the week-end--Tricks In the park
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on Oooh yeah
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on
[Lupe Fiasco:]
Yeah, glitterati, big bodies and tall swings
Devil on me, spittlefields and all saints
Playing field aint levelling the lane
Throwin' stones at ya bones kick pebbles at your pain
Swear they go hard But they sold jello in the pain
Tryna Carmelo but he came
Lord have mercy but we be having that jersey
Flowin' so hungry, rappin' that thirsty
Think fast, fast women like Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Fast life like born on Wednesday and died on Thursday
Fast money like zakat of fitr, break-fast
Slow my roll like break pads
Cause if you run the light
They just might stop you niggas
Rodney King on the dome, just things that I'm On
[Trae Tha Truth]
I'm on this one way headed where the slums play
If I don't make it, then somebody tell my son?
Struggling first class, headed for the runway
Real n-gga shit I gotta make it one day
Hard times so I tell em to fall back
All white but the Phantom is all black
For everything I lost tell em I want it all back
Everyone who left me for nothing tell em to call back
They ain't authentic, Tell them I don't even relate
Minus the love feel like I was something to hate
Tell them hate now
The World looking out, they on the front row
Everybody looking now
I used to have dark nights now it's bright lights
Daytime bus pass, now it's night flights
Had a poor man swag now it's priced right
Always wanted a piece of the pie, now it's sliced right
Yeah you can tell em I'm home
The streets in need of a king, you can tell em I'm home
Used to be at the bottom, tell 'em it wasn't for long
Now I'm always in the hood like I was never gon'
I'm home, tell 'em I'm something they couldn't cut off
Try to hit the switch if you want I aint gon cut off
A 100 thousand volts a true thing gon shut off
Anything in the way is gon get permanantly shut off
[Big Boi]
Never letting go, although sometimes I split like banana peels for heels
My spill is so legit, know the scent everytime I pick up the microphone and spit
Eyes wide, ears open like you on a doctors visit
But this aint physics or rocket science
This a little tune to keep you motivated and inspired
I am not a motivational speaker but people get easilly motivated
When they hear BIG reeking
Havoc on the track boi, grab it hold it tight
My city, growl with me, hoochi hoo'ing through the night sky
Bunch of fly, bow tie, made my mark like the craters on the moon
Rocking aligator shoes I'm on
[Wale]
You know me, cool breeze, a nigga high
Rather live alone forever than live a lie
I'm in the zone, phone pro's keepin me comfy
Got squares, dark squares cover my luggage
I'm in love with some women, more in love with my mother
I'm in love with my God, less in love with this money
And my loving is off, got a bigger cigar
Out in Vegas with broads, bout as thick as Toccara
My ambition is ammunition if this is war
They can't run, they can't run, this is a war
Got forever indurance, forever under purists
I put my breath in this muthaf-cka
They better hear it
Good rhythm, bad women and better lyrics
My only dream to get rich and never marry
Give these niggas the pink slip when they appear
And I aint trippin, my only competition's the mirror.
[Wiz Khalifa]
Remember they used to be like who is this
Now I'm up in this bitch
Smoking weed out in London they bringing me fish and chips
Thought of this as a young'un
Who know this be the life that I really live
Now I'm flying on trips, promoters and owners giving me gifts
Don't gotta shop, I aint payin' for shit
This Audemar on my wrist, got it harder than miss
Older people looking at me how I bought all of this
I say I got it from grindin', perfect timing
Started at the bottom, aint afraid to climb it
Took something rough and turn it to a diamond
It aint come easy, had to find it
And now you can't say I got game cause I define it
Nigga I'm on like the light and if I ever fall off
I'll be back on the same night
Me and my dogs we on the same flight
Carefree I don't need the stress
Honeymooners, she was a dying breed
Honeymooners, I married a female lead.
Palm court crooners Here more to her taste,
But I was a three time loser with an ordinary face.
Honeymooners, should have heard my mother's tales
When over dinner she insisted I eat snails
Honeymooners, when I caught the waiter's eye
Was then I noticed he was smiling at my wife.
CHORUS
But oh my how we could love, I was hand
And she was glove
The marriage was born in heaven
And we were in bed by seven
But oh my how we could love,
I was hand and she was glove
The marriage went into recession,
All through my pained expression
Honeymooners, she was after making fours
And the ski-instructor was caught between floors
I saw him thank her as she offered him a hand I
So how was he to know that she was into nylon pants.
CHORUS
But oh my how we could love,
I was hand and she was glove
The marriage was born in heaven
And we were in bed by seven.
But oh my how we could love,
I was hand and she was glove.
The marriage went into recession,
All through my pained expression.
Honeymooners I guess it's time to pack my bags,
Goodbye Hawaii, au revoir to all that,
Hello mother, please forgive what I did
But I'm off to find another wife who's into playing bridge.
CHORUS
But oh my how we could love,
I was hand and she was glove,
She wanted a honeymooner,
But I was a "come to sooner''.
(Mason, Slamer, Ward)
Long, hot summer night, kisses by the street light
Button up, missed the bus, you'll never be home
For midnight...
It's a cruel world, it's a cruel world
Krushchev, Kennedy, a little piece of history
Daddy said we're coming close, we took it with a pinch of glory
What a cruel world...
Heaven for the holidays, heroes on the radio
Heaven for the holidays, searching for a place to go
Hiding in the alleyway, choking on a cigarette
Heaven for the holidays, the sun's awful red
And it scares me to death
Back seat, heartbeat, making out from memory
Hands up, heads low, eyes looking out
The window...
At the cruel world...
Space talk, moonwalk, it's all right, Ma
Prime time merchandise, it certainly pays to advertise
(Mason, Thomas)
Down on the pampas they've got trouble on the campus
Where the students are revolting and the businessmen are mean
They've got plans for the Presidente - who needs El Presedente?
He don't help nobody...
Out on the islands, all that sunshine and violence
They say close down the casinos, and open up the bank
They've got plans for the government, who needs a government?
They don't help nobody...
Roll - heads are rolling, all around the world
Roll - heads are rolling, somebody pointing a finger at you
In the deserts and the jungles, there's an old familiar rumble
It's the natives getting restless, the guerrillas turning mean
They're headed for the White House, they're ready for a wipe-out
This crowd is looking ugly...
Got trouble on the hippie trail, an army's getting greedy
Everybody's getting nervous, can you tell me what it means?
They've got plans for Afghanistan, they've got their eyes on Pakistan
The grass is overgrowing on the garden rail.
And crickets call a chorus I remember.well,
Calling me, that old familiar thunder. Writing
Letters I always meant to send you.
When every second feature showed Niagara Falls We were
Sitting pretty, feeling twice as tall. Making faces at the madman
In the alleyway. We laughed at every cowboy who stopped to
Fill his glass.
(Chorus)
Calling, Goodbye Laurelie, dirty town lullabye.
Goodbye Laurelie, goodbye.
Goodbye Laurelie, dirty town lullabye.
Goodbye Laurelie . . .
When all the city papers say you're doing well You're
Still a small town story that the neighbours tell When
You smile and say hello to strangers You're still the
Foolish boy they all remember.
The crazy Jane I chased every other night. Has
Reappeared in white like a virgin bride. I'm the
Face in the comer of the photograph A wild man
At the weddding, fixing his tie.
(Chorus)
Calling, Goodbye Laurelie dirty town lullabye.
Goodbye Laurelie, goodbye.
Goodbye Laurelie, dirty town lullabye.
(Mason, Slamer, Thomas)
Sign here sunshine never to look back again
Your star sign tells me it's all in the plan
Let's talk business over a bottle of wine
Feel dizzy! Seemingly this is the time...
Goodbye blue Monday no-one to drag me out of bed
No more signing on at ten
I'II be a starving star instead.
Hey all you creepers just form a line to kiss my ass
I'm telling you this dude's got class
Just bow your head and raise your glass.
Goodbye blue Monday, this boy needs an entourage
Something to fill the third garage
Maybe they'll auction Ceasar's barge...
Watch band-wagons, fashion is forcing the man to hang on
Helplessly shaking his can...
Still more TV. drinks in a nameless motel
Promoting a gala performance in hell.
And so the press say that they're growing tired of me
To hell with friends and N.M.E's
They only write those things to tease
You never guessed that I was in it for the bread
I only played to get ahead
See where the hype has finally led.
Goodbye blue Monday no-one to drag me out of bed
No more signing on at ten
I'II be a starving star instead...]'m a leader
I'm a leader (Repeated)
Bye-bye, bye blue Monday
(Mason, Thomas, Slamer, Ward)
There's a fly on the wall, he must have seen it all
Buzzing around my head, the angry words that you said
And when he flies out the door, like you did once before
It brings it all home (Time after time)
Pick up the phone (I'm here all night)
Always alone...
Domino, I'm in the shadows, now your gone, you know
Domino, and I can't seem to find my way
Domino, you cut me deeper than the river flow
Domino, and I stays dark in here all day
It isn't easy to crawl, it isn't easy at all
But when you're never home, it's harder sleeping alone
I'd give the devil his due, for just one word from you
A card in the mail (Once in a while)
Those little details (Keep me alive)
(Chorus) Do what you do,
Do well, Do what you do,
Do well.
Well some time before I came of age
Someone stopped me once to say,
If you don't get on with what you do,
Do what you do best.
Time to specialize - specialize forget the rest.
He said that I was out of my time
So I began to laugh and he replied,
(Chorus) Do what you do,
Do well Do what you do,
Do well.
Well ten years on when I was all alone The same guy
Stopped me once again. 'Hey you're the guy I know it's you,
I recognize your eyes This sure is some surprise - some
Surprise Hey man I've seen them all and you fumed out the
Best' I had to laugh when I thought of what he said.
(Chorus)
Do what you do, do well
Do what you do, do well
How does it feel be out in the cold?
Going solo.
What will you do when they say you're too old?
Staying single, too nervous to mingle.
Waiting for friends to drop by or maybe phone.
Standing by your window,
(Chorus) Do what you do, do well,
Do what you do, do well, Do what
Do you think that we could risk an evening at the Ritz!
Another shabby hotel room would really blitz my ego.
Why must we meet like this! Sharing illicit kisses
You turn a blind eye to the fact that your leaving my heart in pieces.
I know a little cafe noir where we can sit and count the stars
We can stay till the early hours, supposing of course they allow us
And when they play "As Time Goes By" memories seem to hide here
And while the world is deep in slumber we'll dance the the eternal rumba.
Won't you come away with me
Leave it all behind
There's a happy ending somewhere
Between the lines...
What more can you ask of me, yet another Penthouse suite!
Going through my dimes and quarters, slipping away like water.
So through her expensive tastes your pockets have gone to waste
And I can tell by the way you lie there you're only a paper tiger.
No more early mornings as I gaze in Your eyes
No more hidden kisses and sleepy lullabies...
I'm constantly aware of the things we can never share
At the stork club some chic little pub that I could never afford...
But I wish that I could bare your ultra feminine flair
For your accent on current events over dinner drives me spare...
Dinner at the Ritz, I'd be pleased to make an appointment
I'll be at your door an hour before we arranged
Dear Jean, Dear Jean
Can I appeal to your better nature?
I'm not the boy I was a week or two ago.
I lost my head halfway through your lecture,
I blew a fuse but how were you to know
Dear Jean
You should report this bizarre behaviour
Puff out your rosy reds, and blow me away
One little smile you could be my saviour
I'd be teacher's pet if you asked me to stay
Dear Jean
I nearly died when I first set eyes on your fulsome fig
Even your teeth are geometry, on your lobes I linger
Each night mother Moon sees me stealing by your ro
I can hear you breathing,
I close my eyes, there's a tingle in my thigh,
Are those fingers teasing
I'm nervous, he's nervous, I'm nervous, silly me.
He's nervous, I'm nervous, he's nervous, so tell me,
Dear Jean
Dear Jean
I'm amateur, but I know you can teach me,
I may be green, but I'm ready to learn.
And if you want me to surrender completely
Take off your mortar board and make me a man
Dear Jean
I can't believe, do my eyes deceive, is the door wide open?
Here I go, standing on tippy toe, happy heart full of hoping.
Oh but what can I do? I'm my own poor fool,
Now my dreams come crashing
As you share all the joys with my own head-boy
In a scene full of passion
I'm nervous, he's nervous, I'm nervous, what a fool.
He's nervous, I'm nervous, a nervous little fool.
He fell out of the ocean, a sailor sighting land. Smiles
And sun-tan lotion we laid him on the sand. He
Breathed a sigh or two and smiled To see what he had
Come into, run into.
We asked him what his name was, he called himself a fool He
Said 'I'm the hrst of many and you're the last of few'. He stared
Into the sea and showed us Where horizons disappear, the
Ships appeared.
(Chorus)
He fell on dangerous ground and woke up in paradise.
We took to the hills, afraid of his deep, blue eyes.
This man on dangerous ground, shaking the devil loose.
Falling down on his knees, shaking his fist at the moon.
He built himself a kingdom, we laughed and clapped our hands He
Bought us with his magic, this unfamiliar man. Silver birds have filled
The sky It seems the grass is greener on the other side. Now there's
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
(Chorus)
He fell on dangerous ground and woke up in paradise.
We took to the hills, afraid of his deep, blue eyes.
This man on dangerous ground shaking the devil loose.
The sheets are untidy, it's twelve o'clock and the bed's unmade I
Scratch my face 'cause I forgot to shave. I hide from the milkman when
His feet reach my step; thank God for my girlfriend, she left her
Cigarettes.
Ooh . . . take another drag to bring you down
Ooh . . . just another pack to take you down
(Chorus)
Cigarettes that you leave unlit
Just a trace of lipstick on a filter tip
Cigarettes that you leave unlit,
You'd better smoke it, Before you choke on it.
Cigarettes that you leave unlit
Just a trace of lipstick on a filter tip
Cigarettes that you leave unlit,
You'd better smoke it, Before you choke on it.
Another morning it's hard to hold my spirit up
As if the thought of you would really bring me luck
The sun is shining like the egg upon my face
I may have lost you, but I got your cigarettes
Ooh . . . take another drag to bring you down
Ooh . . . just another pack to take you down.
(Chorus)
Cigarettes that you leave unlit
Just a trace of lipstick on a filter tip
Cigarettes that you leave unlit,
You'd better smoke it, Before you choke on it.
Cigarettes that you leave unlit
Just a trace of lipstick on a filter tip
Cigarettes that you leave unlit,
(Mason, Thomas)
I woke up with rocks in my head
As I pulled on my shoes with my feet still in bed
Ooh, it was a lost weekend
Got to the table screaming, "Never again!"
And I was cursing my terrible luck
There was a hole in my shoe, I was late for the bus
Ooh, she was running for the stop
Got there together and the clouds opened up
There's a change in the weather
Better share an umbrella, there's a storm in the air
Change in the weather
We could stand in the doorway or run for the stairs
Ooh, feel a change for the better now
So I gave her my last cigarette
And we passed it between us with the paper getting wet
Ooh, there was a laugh in her eyes
Made it hard to consider goodbye
An it felt like a movie to me
As I came on like Bogart in a grey gabardine
I made a friend in the rain
There's a place I go, not far from New Mexico,
Where we party all night,
Soon as I came from the city, it was
Bar room brawls and lazy nights,
Why should I fight? When it's
CHORUS
Oh Oh, yes it's a Bordello Night
Oh Oh, yes it's a Bordello Night,
Burn the midnight oil, you're on foreign soil,
That somehow makes it alright.
It's a Bordello Night.
It's the kind of place where a month is just
Twenty eight lazy days,
To just whistle away, in this way.
"Come to the dance?" she asked -
The seven veils or a saraband -
And a mystery romance. When it's . . .
(Mason, Thomas)
There's a gunsight between my eyes
Oh, the jungle's so full of surprises
Looking round for my friends to arrive
Maybe they stayed at home
To stay alive
It's Sunday
Seems to be another bloody Sunday
Weather's lousy
Sunday
Seems to be another bloody Sunday
Can you tell me where the week-end goes
'Cause it sure goes ... fast!
There's a church that stay's open all day
Saving souls as they're passing the plate around
So salute the American way
Keep your head down low
And don't make a sound
The hours are irregular
When your up against the Popular Front
But you'd rather be adventuring
Than serving up in Burger King
You cut the rug and wipe the floor
When they get theirs then you get your kicks
So who cares what your fighting for
You sure look good in uniform
Keep your eyes on the road up ahead
Someone's mine may be yours
Put barbed wire round the bed
Now you've shoo-ed all the ghosties away
Hey, there's no-one to blame I feel the same way too.
Clouds in luly, stormy weather for you and 1.
We were caught in the rain, so very wet again.
Stuck in a jam, cursing the weather man.
(Chorus) Oh Beth, please treat me kindly,
Those silly little things always remind me,
Oh Beth, I need you beside me Tomorrow
Brings blue skies So please wipe the tear
From your eye.
Anyway, I'd still be the same, if you came home again.
Losing the fight, sweet surrender by G ndlelight.
(Chorus) Oh Beth please treat me kindly
Those silly little things always remind me
Oh Beth, I need you beside me Tomorrow
Brings blue skies So please wipe the tear
One night on the tiles, that night when the boys and me
Went out and played around
I should have stayed home, but I left my old lady here
And headed for the town, for the town.
Laid my money down, hung around underground
Held our glasses high, had too much rye, my head and I.
It was so bad for business, so bad for business,
So bad for business I stayed,
It was so bad for business I stayed.
One knock on the door, who's this with a ring on her hand
I just don't understand.
I'm down on the ground, I guess that I paid the price
'cause I'm married twice round.
Two times around
Come now why make a fuss?
It'll all work out for the three of us
Please don't say we' re through,
There's enough of me for the two of you.
This is so bad for business, so bad for business
So bad for business I stayed,
This is so bad for business .. .

City Boy
Five seven o five
But there's no reply
Five seven o five
Got myself just one more dime
But will the operator hold the line
When my ears keep telling me
There's no reply, no reply
I pick up the telephone
I go crazy when there's no one home
I feel cheated and small when
My number's on the wall of her room
Call me soon
Hey operator
Five seven o five
But there's no reply
Five seven o five
Why do you keep me hanging on the line
I can't believe that there's no one there
Is this a private number love affair
With your phone booth lover
Still waiting on the wire, high wire
I saw the light shine behind your door
I heard the party on the second floor
But you only pretend that you've been
Visiting friends from abroad, tell me more
Hey operator
Five seven o five
But there's no reply
Five seven o five
Why do you keep me hanging on the line
Mysterious people I can't believe what she done to me
It's too late now
It's all over town
Five seven o five
But there's no reply
Five seven o five
The doctor said that a week in bed would certainly do the trick But I knew from the start that it wasn't my heart, it was my head that was making me sick Well I got so bored, taking trips abroad to improve the condition I had. Just sitting at home like a sackful of bones, while my neighbours thought me utterly mad I took to L.
D. I wrote to magazines. The kind they sell you with one eye on the door But I'd like to endorse the lonely hoofers course That really showed me what dancing is for I was first to arrive, kinda nervous and shy, when the atmosphere put me at ease. It was cozy and warm, like the day I was born, with the smell of burning joss on the breeze I first got my chance at the Oddball Dance ... The thrill of romance At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance . . . The thrill of romance. At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance.
(Mason, Slamer, Ward)
Leave my keys in the door
Throw my bills on the floor
A note by the bed was all that se said
You couldn't stay, your leaving me
Take the phone off the wall
Tell your friends when they call
That we're indisposed, and this house is closed
From now on, you're leaving me
You're leaving me, with no good-byes
I want to die, and I don't know why you're
Leaving me with lonely nights
My eyes on the door, my face on the floor
You're leaving me, and life goes on, night after day
And time drags by real slowly non
How d'you spend your weekend
I stayed over with friends
And talked until four, slept on the floor
Moonlight. . Oh in the Moonlight
Eyes bright . . . Waiting for daylight
Please, don't fight, everything's so right
High lights . . Sweet golden goodnights.
But there you go, it goes to show, how my imagination flows.
In never ending circles, with glances asking questions
We chase each other's alibis
And if my voices show me caution,
(only through your eyes)
It's only through your eyes
Nightlife ...seems like a still life
Waiting ...for unfinished paintings
oh but meanwhile ... time in between smiles
stands still . . like some breathless windmill.
But there you go, it goes to show, how my imagination flows.
If the sages say I'm foolish. I'll say your every movement
Was like a river, washing over me.
But if you tell me that its ended, I'll shake my head and leave
