Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. Dr Steve Morton talks about the different values that humans obtain from biodiversity and the role we will need to play in shaping its future. (07:51)

Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals living on Earth, carefully playing an important part in maintaining the balance of nature.
The diversity of species is not distributed throughout planet because life depends on many factors including geography.
There are thousands upon thousands of plant and animal species on earth. They are all continuously evolving and adapting to the environment around them. Biodiversity is the variety of animals and plants found on this planet including the geographic locations they are found in. This concept is what makes our planet different from others in our solar system and being able experience all these variations first hand is what makes the earth so marvelous.
Think of the earth as a perfectly tuned machine with sprockets, springs, and oil (plants, animals and climates) all working to maintain the balance of nature. The diversity of species is not evenly distributed throughout the planet because life depends on factors such as temperature, altitude, precipitation, soil, the presence of other species and geography, since tropical regions support more life than polar regions.
Biodiversity is important to sustaining life on earth because it prevents any one species from throwing the balance of nature out of order. For example, snakes are not a welcome presence in our lives. We fear them and kill them because of it. One of the many things that snakes feed on is rats and if we were to kill of all the snakes, we would end up having a terrible rat problem. Therefore humans should to everything in their power to conserve the natural variation of snakes to ensure it doesn’t get an unnatural rat problem.
For Example – Tropical regions support more life than polar regions.

Biodiversity is the degree of variation of life forms within a given species, ecosystem, biome, or an entire planet. Biodiversity is a measure of the health of ecosystems. Biodiversity is in part a function of climate. In terrestrial habitats, tropical regions are typically rich whereas polar regions support fewer species.
Rapid environmental changes typically cause mass extinctions. One estimate is that less than 1% of the species that have existed on Earth are extant.
Since life began on Earth, five major mass extinctions and several minor events have led to large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The Phanerozoic eon (the last 540 million years) marked a rapid growth in biodiversity via the Cambrian explosion—a period during which the majority of multicellular phyla first appeared. The next 400 million years included repeated, massive biodiversity losses classified as mass extinction events. In the Carboniferous, rainforest collapse led to a great loss of plant and animal life. The Permian–Triassic extinction event, 251 million years ago, was the worst; vertebrate recovery took 30 million years. The most recent, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago, and has often attracted more attention than others because it resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.

What is biodiversity and why is it important?
Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. What does biodiversity do for us?
How does biodiversity affect ecosystem services (everything nature provides for our survival)? The answer is complex, but this much is clear: we need to preserve the biodiversity we're so rapidly losing, and to support research that gives us real insight into how ecosystems work. This was a student project for an intro conservation biology course, taught by Brad Cardinale at the School of Natural Resources & Environment at the University of Michigan. Biodiversity is the term used to encompass the variety of all living organisms on Earth, including their genetic diversity, species diversity and the diversity of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, together with their associated evolutionary and ecological processes. But as biodiversity is also a human concept, different people bring their own set of values to bear on it. Dr Steve Morton talks about the different values that humans obtain from biodiversity and the role we will need to play in shaping its future. (07:51)

The diversity of species is not distributed throughout planet because life depends on many factors including geography.
There are thousands upon thousands of plant and animal species on earth. They are all continuously evolving and adapting to the environment around them. Biodiversity is the variety of animals and plants found on this planet including the geographic locations they are found in. This concept is what makes our planet different from others in our solar system and being able experience all these variations first hand is what makes the earth so marvelous.
Think of the earth as a perfectly tuned machine with sprockets, springs, and oil (plants, animals and climates) all working to maintain the balance of nature. The diversity of species is not evenly distributed throughout the planet because life depends on factors such as temperature, altitude, precipitation, soil, the presence of other species and geography, since tropical regions support more life than polar regions.
Biodiversity is important to sustaining life on earth because it prevents any one species from throwing the balance of nature out of order. For example, snakes are not a welcome presence in our lives. We fear them and kill them because of it. One of the many things that snakes feed on is rats and if we were to kill of all the snakes, we would end up having a terrible rat problem. Therefore humans should to everything in their power to conserve the natural variation of snakes to ensure it doesn’t get an unnatural rat problem.
For Example – Tropical regions support more life than polar regions.

It is important to note that the number of species is not comparable from one environment to another, but they can be compared from one like environment to another. Do not think desert to rainforest, but rather desert to desert.
The biodiversity of an environment is also very important. By having a variation in the environments, there can be a variation in the species of plants and animals living on the planet. It is best to have a large number of different climates for the variations of life to evolve in.

Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth explains the threats to Earth's biodiversity.
Biodiversity, or the variation of life forms within an ecosystem, is essential to the continuation of life as we know it. If the Earth's biodiversity were to suddenly become less diverse, there would be significant challenges that humans as a species may not be able to overcome.
There are several different factors that have a serious impact on the biodiversity of the world. These threats should be evaluated on an individual basis, as well as how they all interact. By tackling these threats, the diversity of the planet can be maintained and we can help to ensure our survival, as well as ensuring a legacy of diversity for future generations.
Threats to Biodiversity

There are five major threats to biodiversity. They can be simplied into the acronym HIPPO -
H: Habitat. As people expand their living area, animal habitats begin to shink. These shrinking habitats leave animals feeling cramped and often leads to added stress. This stress can result in the extinction of various animal species.
I: Invasive Species. Invasive, or introduced, species are often put into unnatural environments by humans. These animals or plants often outcompete the native species and have no natural predators allowing them to control the environment and destroy native creatures.
P: Population. The population that treatens biodiversity most is the human population. As the human population increases, so does the amount of resources needed to keep them satisfied. The appropriation of these resources means that they are not available to the plants or animals who need them for survival.
P: Pollution. As pollution increases, the plants and animals find it more and more difficult to survive. Ridding the world of, or at least limiting the pollution would not only help the world's plants and animals, but it would also help humans as well.
O: Overexploitation is the process in which humans use too much of a single resource. This can result in the loss of different species or environments.c
