For surfers, Europe has always been a destination that offers promise of something more than simply wave riding. The remnants of eras long past often stand right at the water’s edge, defying the ocean’s penchant for constant, radical change. Not surprising, such an environment is always inspiring unique approaches to the act and art of surfing.
Like… river surfing. For the second installment of our Made In Europe Series, Southern California-based filmmaker Matt Payne turns his back to the ocean altogether and heads hundreds of miles inland, to a reliable little wedge in Munich, Germany. Payne catches up with local Quirin Rohleder, who got hooked on surfing as a kid, after discovering the very rippable standing wave of the Eisbach—or “ice brook”.

River Surfing the Eisbach in Munich | Made in Europe
Surfing in Calgary?
The nearest ocean surf is at least 1000 kilometres to the west, but that hasn't stopped surfers both beginners and experts from enjoying some river surfing on the Bow River - the standing wave near the 10th street bridge is a result of all the changes wrought by last years massive flooding and it is creating a lot of fun time on the river.

So River Surfing is a real thing! We know since we've just done it in Calgary on the Bow river and the Kananaskis river! Definitely a must try! Naturally we had to suit up and look good for it!

River surfing
surfing is the sport of surfing either standing waves or tidal bores in rivers. Claims for its origins include a 1955 ride of 1.5 miles along the tidal bore of the River Severn.
River surfing on standing waves has been documented as far back as the early-1970s in Munich, Germany, today offering the world's largest urban surfing spot.
Standing waves
In this type of river surfing, the wave is stationary on the river, caused by a high volume of water constricted by flowing over a rock and creating a wave behind. It is a form of hydraulic jump. A river surfer can face up-stream and catch this wave and have the feeling of traveling fast over water while not actually moving.

Germany
Despite being many hundreds of kilometres from the nearest ocean, Munich has a reputation as a surfing hotspot, offering one of Europe's best waves. The Bavarian capital is the birthplace of river surfing. The city has been the center of surfboard riding on a stationary wave since the early-1970s. Up to 100 surfers daily hit the waves in the city's Englischer Garten, the largest urban park in the world. There, in the Eisbach river, the world’s best known river surf spot, the Eisbach wave — literally “ice brook” — the flow velocity of the icy water is about 5 meters at a rate of 20 tons per second, and the temperature never gets above 15 degrees Celsius. An annual surfing competition is held on the standing wave. Additionally, there are further stationary waves that form on the river Isar just downstream of the Wittelsbacherbrücke bridge in Isarvorstadt, as well as on the canal that joins the Isar channel with the Floßlände. Munich has produced the best river surfers and was the first location that created a true surfing community around an inland river wave. The scene has around 1,000 active surfers, while 10,000 in Munich will have tried it at some point.

For the second installment of our Made In Europe Series, Southern California-based filmmaker Matt Payne turns his back to the ocean altogether and heads hundreds of miles inland, to a reliable little wedge in Munich, Germany. Payne catches up with local Quirin Rohleder, who got hooked on surfing as a kid, after discovering the very rippable standing wave of the Eisbach—or “ice brook”.

Pororoca Surfing The Amazon
Pororoca From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The pororoca is a tidal bore, with waves up to 4 meters high that travel as much as 13 kilometers inland upstream the Amazon River. Its name comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise". It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean. The phenomenon is best seen in February and March. The wave has become popular with surfers. Since 1999, an annual championship has been held in São Domingos do Capim. The pororoca is a tidal bore, with waves up to 4 meters high that travel as much as 13 kilometers inland upstream the Amazon River. Its name comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise". It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean. The phenomenon is best seen in February and March.
The wave has become popular with surfers. Since 1999, an annual championship has been held in São Domingos do Capim. However, surfing the Pororoca is especially dangerous, as the water contains a significant amount of debris from the shores of the river (often, entire trees). In 2003 the Brazilian Picuruta Salazar won the event with a record ride of 12.5 kilometers during 37 minutes.
In this short film, a group of professional surfers take their boards for a ride on the Pororoca.

A surfer was injured at a popular beach in Oregon when he was bitten by a shark Monday afternoon, officials said. The victim, whom officials identified as Joseph Tanner, 29, was surfing near Indian Beach in Ecola State Park around 4 p.m. when he was bitten, according to preliminary information.
