A detention basin is a stormwater management facility installed on, or adjacent to, tributaries of rivers, streams, lakes or bays that is designed to protect against flooding and, in some cases, downstream erosion by storing water for a limited period of a time. These basins are also called "dry ponds", "holding ponds" or "dry detention basins" if no permanent pool of water exists. Some detention ponds are also "wet ponds" in that they are designed to permanently retain some volume of water at all times. In its basic form, a detention basin is used to manage water quantity while having a limited effectiveness in protecting water quality, unless it includes a permanent pool feature.

Detention basins are storm water best management practices (BMPs) that provide general flood protection and can also control extreme floods such as a 1 in 100-year storm event. The basins are typically built during the construction of new land development projects including residential subdivisions or shopping centers. The ponds help manage the excess runoff generated by newly-constructed impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots and rooftops.

Floyd R. Lamb (September 3, 1914 – June 2, 2002) was a Democratic member of the Nevada Senate from 1956 to 1983. From 1946 to 1956, Lamb joined the Lincoln County Commission until he was elected to the senate.

In 1956, Lamb represented Lincoln County and in 1965 Lamb moved to Las Vegas where he represented Clark County and served as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee until 1983.

In 1977, Floyd Lamb convinced Nevada Legislature to acquire Tule Springs Park from the then financially troubled city of Las Vegas, and the park was later renamed Floyd Lamb State Park.

Also, Lamb Boulevard in Las Vegas is named after him and/or his brother, Ralph Lamb, a former Clark County Sherriff.

Lamb and other Nevada politicians were convicted in 1983 of taking a $23,000 bribe in an FBI sting operation (Operation Yobo). Lamb spent nine months in prison, then he was paroled and his civil rights were restored by the state Pardons Board.
