Hey, I'm Student Dr. Thompson here with a review of my pediatrics rotation and resources to use to study for the pediatrics shelf exam. Below are the notes I jotted down to help make the video all in one take. Thanks for watching.
Pediatrics Rotation
Disclaimer: Everyones experience is going to be different, I encourage you guys to write about your experience in the comments to give younger viewers a broader perspective. Stay tuned, in the end I will tell you the best resources to use for the shelf exam.
I will talk about my experience, which may have similarities to most. I only had 4 weeks, where others get 6 and even 8. All 4 were with the same physician, 95% clinic 5% hospital.
Primary care physician for Birth to 18
Residency: 3 years
Average Salary: $177k (that means 50% make less, vice versa)
Clinical Setting: Varies GREATLY depending on the season. I was in summer right before school started. Lots of back to school check ups. Sports physicals. Lots of well child visits. Fall and Winter might be totally different with sick kids coming in all day, I missed out on all of that, maybe that is why I like this rotation so much, not sure. Lots of vaccinations. Depression screening. Sexual counseling.
A few procedures - stitches, broken bones, circumcisions
Hospital setting: Rounding on newborns in the hospital, circumcisions, congratulating the parents. Seeing the patient without the parents (one of the few times)
MY PRECEPTOR: Dr. K, awesome guy, late 30’s, worked 3 days a week (So I studied a ton), wore skate shoes and a button up shirt. Everyone loved him. Sent me in to write a SOAP note on all new patients, and most existing patients depending on time. I would see them, do a FAST presentation and then we would go in together.
He didn’t want to work so hard he never saw his family
He made much more than average, even working less (many in UT do it sounds like)
One pediatrician said his starting salary was what his ending salary would have been

Pediatrics (also known as paediatrics) is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. A medical practitioner who specializes in this area is known as a pediatrician, or paediatrician. The word pediatrics and its cognates mean healer of children; they derive from two Greek words: παῖς (pais = child) and ἰατρός (iatros = doctor or healer).
In the United States, a pediatrician (US spelling) is often a primary care physician who specializes in children, whereas in the Commonwealth a paediatrician (British spelling) generally is a medical specialist not in primary general practice.[citation needed]
Pediatrics is a relatively new medical specialty. A 2nd century AD manuscript by the Greek physician and gynecologist Soranus of Ephesus dealt with neonatal pediatrics; the Persian scholar and doctor al-Razi (865–925) published a short treatise on diseases among children. The first printed book on pediatrics was in Italian (1472) – Bagallarder's Little Book on Disease in Children. Pediatrics as a specialized field of medicine developed in the mid-19th century; Abraham Jacobi (1830–1919) is known as the father of pediatrics because of his many contributions to the field. He was born in Germany, where he received his medical training, but later practiced in New York City.

I will talk about my experience, which may have similarities to most. I only had 4 weeks, where others get 6 and even 8. All 4 were with the same physician, 95% clinic 5% hospital.
Primary care physician for Birth to 18
Residency: 3 years
Average Salary: $177k (that means 50% make less, vice versa)
Clinical Setting: Varies GREATLY depending on the season. I was in summer right before school started. Lots of back to school check ups. Sports physicals. Lots of well child visits. Fall and Winter might be totally different with sick kids coming in all day, I missed out on all of that, maybe that is why I like this rotation so much, not sure. Lots of vaccinations. Depression screening. Sexual counseling.
A few procedures - stitches, broken bones, circumcisions
Hospital setting: Rounding on newborns in the hospital, circumcisions, congratulating the parents. Seeing the patient without the parents (one of the few times)
MY PRECEPTOR: Dr. K, awesome guy, late 30’s, worked 3 days a week (So I studied a ton), wore skate shoes and a button up shirt. Everyone loved him. Sent me in to write a SOAP note on all new patients, and most existing patients depending on time. I would see them, do a FAST presentation and then we would go in together.
He didn’t want to work so hard he never saw his family
He made much more than average, even working less (many in UT do it sounds like)
One pediatrician said his starting salary was what his ending salary would have been

I just finished my PEDS rotations and now I'm on to inpatient IM. I did experience some hearing loss after that rotation but otherwise I walked away unscathed. There is also news about my coordinator who sucks balls!! (SPOILER: she still sucks balls). We're actually making a list of all the students whom she has screwed over within the few short months she's been working. Fun stuff: Allyne and I traveled together to Philly where we met Minh Dao to take our PE board exam. 12 patients and 7 hours later we were free!! and $1300 poorer. We took to the town to explore. I just finished my PEDS rotations and now I'm on to inpatient IM. I did experience some hearing loss after that rotation but otherwise I walked away unscathed.
