Before I proceed to the introduction I would like to let you know this is the first and original version of this ghazal by Sher Ali and Mehr Ali which was sung around 20 years before and other episodes which came later on are not even of full length thanks.
Mehr and Sher Ali are Qawwali singers who were born in the Pakistani border-town of Kasur in the early 1950s and received their earlier training in classical music from their father who was a court classical singer at the small Sikh principality of Patiala (now in India). Their father then became the disciple of Fateh Ali Khan, the father of the famous Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and young Sher Ali was the student of Bakhshi Salamat Ali Qawwal. Mehr Ali and Sher Ali thus acknowledge that the family of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is their "Ustad Gharana" or "Teacher House", a term imbued with veneration among musician circles in Pakistan and North India. Mehr Ali was taught by Muhammad Ali Fareedi, an ordained Sufi qawwal of the shrine of the 13th century Sufi, Baba Farid. Their family is a devoti of Sufis like Baba Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussain and Baba Jyoti Shah.
Mehr Ali was thus trained in Sufi philosophy, poetry, texts and rituals. All qawwals must have a deep knowledge of Sufi poetic texts. In practice, this often means sacrificing musical quality to retain purity of text.
Mehr and Sher are qawwals who have achieved the rare combination of both musical quality and authentic text rendition: Sher is known for his ability to understand the importance of rhythm (lai-kari) and render classical modes in a strong voice, while Mehr's heart-rending high-pitched voice strikes the heart (zarb-ul-qalb) when the poetry contains words of entreaty or sorrow.
The group feels that their music brings harmony and peace to the soul and projects the message of love and unity for all. "We sometimes go into a trance during our performance, so moved are we by the text and music," says Mehr Ali. They believe that qawwali goes beyond the limitations of orthodox religion and is a universal invitation to all living beings to share in the feelings of the powerful emotion of pure love, the pain of separation and the joy of union.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (/ˈɑːli, ɑːˈliː/;Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, translit. ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕaliː bɪn ʔabiː t̪ˤaːlɪb]; 13 Rajab, 21 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH; 15 September 601 – 29 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic caliphate from 656 to 661.
Born to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Ali was the only person born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam, as many sources, especially Shia ones say. Ali was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Medina, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatimah. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community. He was appointed caliph by Muhammad's Companions (Sahaba) in 656, after caliph Uthman ibn Affan was assassinated. Ali's reign saw civil unrest and in 661, he was attacked and assassinated by a Kharijite while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, dying two days later.

Mehr Ali
Mehr Ali is a village in the Razar Tehsil and Swabi District in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The road from Shewa Adda leading to Sher Darra passeses through Mehr Ali. This road ends at Sher Darra, a village about three km at the north of Mehr Ali from where the Buner District starts. It is surrounded by barsati Nalahs from west and east. A road from Rustam via Machi Mardan District links it with an other road to the Buner District leading to Swat valley. It lies at the foot of Hamalias range of mountains.

Mehr Ali was taught by Muhammad Ali Fareedi, an ordained Sufi qawwal of the shrine of the 13th century Sufi, Baba Farid. Their family is a devoti of Sufis like Baba Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussain and Baba Jyoti Shah. Mehr Ali was thus trained in Sufi philosophy, poetry, texts and rituals. All qawwals must have a deep knowledge of Sufi poetic texts. In practice, this often means sacrificing musical quality to retain purity of text. Mehr and Sher are qawwals who have achieved the rare combination of both musical quality and authentic text rendition: Sher is known for his ability to understand the importance of rhythm (lai-kari) and render classical modes in a strong voice, while Mehr's heart-rending high-pitched voice strikes the heart (zarb-ul-qalb) when the poetry contains words of entreaty or sorrow. The group feels that their music brings harmony and peace to the soul and projects the message of love and unity for all. "We sometimes go into a trance during our performance, so moved are we by the text and music," says Mehr Ali. They believe that qawwali goes beyond the limitations of orthodox religion and is a universal invitation to all living beings to share in the feelings of the powerful emotion of pure love, the pain of separation and the joy of union. -

Before I proceed to the introduction I would like to let you know this is the first and original version of this ghazal by Sher Ali and Mehr Ali which was sung around 20 years before and other episodes which came later on are not even of full length thanks.
Mehr and Sher Ali are Qawwali singers who were born in the Pakistani border-town of Kasur in the early 1950s and received their earlier training in classical music from their father who was a court classical singer at the small Sikh principality of Patiala (now in India). Their father then became the disciple of Fateh Ali Khan, the father of the famous Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and young Sher Ali was the student of Bakhshi Salamat Ali Qawwal. Mehr Ali and Sher Ali thus acknowledge that the family of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is their "Ustad Gharana" or "Teacher House", a term imbued with veneration among musician circles in Pakistan and North India. Mehr Ali was taught by Muhammad Ali Fareedi, an ordained Sufi qawwal of the shrine of the 13th century Sufi, Baba Farid. Their family is a devoti of Sufis like Baba Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussain and Baba Jyoti Shah.
Mehr Ali was thus trained in Sufi philosophy, poetry, texts and rituals. All qawwals must have a deep knowledge of Sufi poetic texts. In practice, this often means sacrificing musical quality to retain purity of text.
