Herstmonceux Castle is a brick-built castle near Herstmonceux, East Sussex, England. From 1957 to 1988 its grounds were the home of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Today it is used by the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Canada.
Herstmonceux Castle is one of the oldest significant brick buildings still standing in England; brick was an unusual material for the time in Britain. The builders of Herstmonceux Castle concentrated more on grandeur and comfort than on defence.
Herstmonceux Castle is home to events throughout the year, including the annual England's Medieval Festival on August Bank Holiday weekend.
The first written evidence of the existence of the Herst settlement appears in William the Conqueror's Domesday Book which reports that one of William's closest supporters granted tenancy of the manor at Herst to a man named ‘Wilbert'. By the end of the twelfth century, the family at the manor house at Herst had considerable status. Written accounts mention a lady called Idonea de Herst, who married a Norman nobleman named Ingelram de Monceux. Around this time, the manor began to be called the “Herst of the Monceux”, a name that eventually became Herstmonceux.

Herstmonceux (/ˌhɜːrsmənˈzuː/ hurs-mən-ZOO or /-ˈsuː/ -SOO) is a village and civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex, England. The parish includes Herstmonceux Castle, the village of Cowbeech and a number of smaller hamlets.
The name ’’Herstmonceux’’ comes from Anglo-Saxon hyrst, "wooded hill", plus the name of the Monceux family who were lords of the manor here in the 12th century.
The parish council consists of eleven elected members. An electoral ward in the same name exists. This ward had a population at the 2011 census of 2,852.
The village (previously called Gardner Street) is part of the larger Herstmonceux civil parish, which includes Cowbeech and the hamlets of Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Cowbeech Hill, Stunts Green, Ginger's Green, Flowers Green and part of Windmill Hill. Cowbeech village is located to the north-west of the parish.
Herstmonceux Castle (some 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of the village) is a former site of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. It is now home to the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, and the area therefore enjoys an influx of Canadian and other international students each school year. The castle grounds are also home to the Observatory Science Centre, which is operated by Science Projects Limited, and the Herstmonceux Mediaeval Festival.Buckwell Place was the seat of the Hare family.
East Sussex /ˈsʌsᵻks/ is a county in South East England. It is bordered by the counties of Kent to the north and east, Surrey to the north west and West Sussex to the west, and to the south by the English Channel.
East Sussex is part of the historic county of Sussex, which has its roots in the ancient kingdom of the South Saxons, who established themselves there in the 5th century AD, after the departure of the Romans. Archaeological remains are plentiful, especially in the upland areas. The area's position on the coast has also meant that there were many invaders, including the Romans and later the Normans. Earlier industries have included fishing, iron-making, and the wool trade, all of which have declined, or been lost completely.
Sussex is traditionally divided into six sub-divisions known as rapes. From the 12th century the three eastern rapes and the three western rapes each had separate quarter sessions, with the county town of the three eastern rapes being Lewes. This situation was formalised by Parliament in 1865, and the two parts were made into administrative counties, each with distinct elected county councils in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888. In East Sussex there were also three self-administered county boroughs: Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.
A castle (from Latin: castellum) is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European innovation, castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire resulted in its territory being divided among individual lords and princes. These nobles built castles to control the area immediately surrounding them, and were both offensive and defensive structures; they provided a base from which raids could be launched as well as protection from enemies. Although their military origins are often emphasised in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local populace and important travel routes, and rural castles were often situated near features that were integral to life in the community, such as mills and fertile land.
England i/ˈɪŋɡlənd/ is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers much of the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic; and includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.
By the end of the 12th Century, the family at the manor house at Herste had considerable status. Written accounts mention a lady called Idonea de Herste, who married a Norman nobleman named Ingelram de Monceux. Around this time, the manor began to be called the 'Herste of the Monceux'; a name that eventually became Herstmonceux (pronouncedHerst-mon-soo). In 1440 a Sussex Knight by the name of Roger Fiennes petitioned the Crown for the right to crenellate or fortify his manor of Herstmonceux. He had risen to prominence after serving Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) and later serving as Treasurer of the Household of Henry VI. He had amassed a considerable fortune and had decided to use it to construct a castle befitting of his family's new found importance. The building was at the...

Follies at Stowe (first) and Herstmonceux Castle (from min 3:22) 'Capability' Brown (1716-1783): He authored over 170 gardens surrounding the finest country houses and estates in Britain, such as Stowe, Croome Court , Blenheim Palace, Warwick Castle, Harewood House, Bowood House, Milton Abbey (and nearby Milton Abbas village), partially Kew Gardens. His style: naturalistic compositions of smooth undulating grass running straight to the house, clumps, belts and scattering of trees with serpentine lakes, small rivers... His 'landscaped/grammatical garden' swept away almost all the remnants of previous formally patterned styles. His critique: Russell Page accused him of 'encouraging his wealthy clients to tear out their splendid formal gardens and replace them with his facile compositions...

Arundel Castle was established by Roger de Montgomery in 1067 as part of William the Conqueror's program to establish new fortifications. Since the 11th century it has served as the home for the Duke of Norfolk. The current Duke, and his family, preserve the monument, allowing public visits, (while retaining a little privacy for themselves). We were grateful for their hospitality. The castle has been extensively restored, changed, and remodeled over the centuries - but in a thoughtful manner. Today visitors can explore ancient, (and more modern), areas that provide a genuine feeling for this exquisite monument. At the weekend we were invited to visit the picturesque Arundel Castle in West Sussex. No relation to the Arendelle Castle of Frozen fame (although I think that Mia was convinced), entrance to the castle includes a visit to the beautiful castle gardens, a tour of the spectacular castle rooms and bedrooms, and a chance to see the very oldest part of the castle, parts of which date from 1068, with lovely views across the downland and out to sea. We had just dug out our old digital cameras for the children so they had a great time snapping photos of the things that they saw. I hope you like my quick look around the castle! Sudeley Castle is a beautiful but tragic place. The castle was briefly the home of Queen Kathrine Parr, the widow of Henry VIII. She married Sir Thomas Seymour after the death of the King and moved to Sudeley. She gave birth to a daughter, Mary, on August 30, 1548 but died five days later. The legend is that Kathrine's spirit haunts the castle. In 1549, Seymour was arrested and executed for treason. Sudeley Castle is privately owned but opened to the public on a limited basis. It is a popular venue for weddings in St. Mary's Chapel.

This is the story of Waldron, a small East Sussex village, told through historic photographs and postcards, and rare surviving cine film. It shows the historic buildings of the parish, like the Elizabethan Hersonsdale, and Possingworth Mansion, an example of Victorian Gothic exuberance, as well as village street scenes through the years. We know a great deal about the people who lived in the large houses, but there is also a visual record of the ordinary people of Waldron, many of whom were employed by the various estates and manors. For generations of Waldron families it was a hard, agricultural way of life, but much changed with the outbreak of the First World War. Not only did Waldron lose fifty-four men, but the war was a catalyst for great social and economic upheaval. This film sho...

“Archaeological Evidence of Human-Animal Cohabitation: The Herstmonceux Stables Complex” as presented at the 2016 Waterloo Climates of Change Conference. Early excavations at Herstmonceux revealed the suspected location of an extensive medieval stable structure adjacent to the present castle. These early investigations produced an extensive amount of surveys and preliminary data, however, they failed to generate professional reports or cumulative analyses. In short, earlier work remained incomplete. In the summer of 2016, a team of students from Waterloo and other schools worked under my supervision in the context of a field school to revisit the stables site, to collate previous data, and to synthesize what we know about human-animal existence at late medieval Herstmonceux. This paper ...
