The Fashion and Textiles Museum is a museum based in Bermondsey dedicated to all aspects of fashion and textile design. Founded in 2003 by the designer Zandra Rhodes, the museum is now operated by Newham College and rather than running a permanent exhibition, offers an ongoing programme of temporary displays.
The museum is housed in a converted warehouse which was redesigned by the Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta in collaboration with Rhodes. It was Legorreta's first and only building in Europe. In addition to the exhibition space, the building contains a textile studio and printing workshop and private residential quarters. The building has become a tourist attraction in its own right due to its outrageous colour scheme of hot pink, burnt orange, yellow, and bright blue.

TITLE: Fashioning the Nation: Fashionability, Female Cultural Agency and Thainess at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles SPEAKER: Eksuda Singhalampong Eksuda Singhalampong (Lecturer, Department of Art History, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand) discusses Queen Sirikit of Thailand’s contribution to the construction of a Thai cultural identity through her invention of a national dress for women. This was in part achieved to reassert the Royal image and power within the Thai public consciousness following the revolution of 1932 that brought an end to absolute monarchy. In a sense, Queen Sirikit’s cultural project could be seen as a means to establish continuity with a suitable historic past. The project therefore commemorates the Thai monarchy’s dynastic paradigm through cultural patr...

Source: http://www.benfranklinsworld.com/024 What can John Hancock’s suit tell you about the man who wore it? The clothing a person wears tells you a lot about them: Whether they are rich or poor, what kind of work they do, what colors they like, and what they value. We know that John Hancock was a wealthy merchant and prominent politician, but did you know that his suit reveals even more about his life and personality than the documents and portraits he left behind? Museum professional and textiles expert Kimberly Alexander joins us to explore the world of 18th-century fashion and material culture and what objects like John Hancock’s suit communicate about the past.
