Food and
Lifestyle Expert
Cheryl Dent on ActorsE Chat with
Host Kurt Kelly.
This
Los Angeles native has studied and traveled the world. She earned a diploma from the famed
La Sorbonne in
Paris and lived and worked in
Southeast Asia and
French speaking Québec. This global perspective affords Cheryl an intriguingly rich reservoir of cross-cultural facts, techniques, and references to draw upon as she plies her craft and cooking talents.
While running her boutique catering company Cheryl garnered accolades and a celebrity A-list following for her beach
BBQ’s and contemporary cuisine with a homespun twist. “As a kid we moved to
New Orleans and it was here that I fell in love with
Cajun flavors and all things
Southern.”
Cheryl and her late father
Charles, an industrial engineer, welded together a portable mesquite grill made from a discarded barbecue, several chunks of scrap metal and a hand truck that they found at junkyard on a road trip to
Sacramento. The versatile apparatus was given the moniker ‘
Chuck’ and could be set up at catering venues as varied as the sandy beaches of
Malibu to the remote enclaves of the
Hollywood Hills. To this day her dry spice rub mixture remains top secret, although a copy of the recipe is kept locked up in a safety deposit box in
Century City, away from the prying eyes of the food police.
Currently, Cheryl stars as the gregarious chef and host of Aol’s
Kitchen Daily, an internet video series of delicious recipes and professional chef tips for the busy cook in every family’s home. She recently starred in an episode of
I Do Over for weTV, in which she designed one lucky couples’ wild and totally edible
Candy Land-inspired desert bar. She also designed one lucky couples lavish dream wedding on
TLC’s
The Wedding Wars. Cheryl also stars in the
Style Network series,
The Big Party Plan Off! This unique program immerses the audience in the fanciful world of designing the perfect party from thematic conception to prop and decor building to inventing apt and delicious foods and beverages.
Cheryl was selected as one of the country’s top Food Stylists, and she competed on
The Food Network Challenge Series -
Superstar Food Stylists, where she brought her vivacious spirit and can-do attitude to this grueling culinary battle. Cheryl has styled commercial campaigns for the likes of
T.G.I.
Fridays,
Wendy’s,
Sara Lee,
Sears,
El Torito,
Hometown Buffet, Burdine’s, Kelloggs, Albertsons,
Toll House Cookies, and many others. She works alongside many of the industries top directors, and she created the food centerfold for
FOOD &
WINE Magazines
Celebrity Chef issue. Cheryl also served as the host of the
Travel Channel series, Food
Crazy, in which she guided viewers through a plethora of culinary voyages from eating insects at authentic
Asian restaurants to exploring the world of poultry at the Butterball
Turkey test kitchen in
Chicago to uncovering cures for ice cream-induced brain freeze on the sidewalks of suburbia. Cheryl spent her childhood learning the intricacies of cooking, baking, decor, and party planning at the side of her Mom, a home economics teacher.
Cheryl has been a frequent voice of gastronomic secrets and lifestyle advice on the Emmy-winning talk show
Soap Talk (with
Lisa Rinna). Her segments included how to make
Engagement Chicken and how to fashion an unforgettable theme party. She has also appeared as a guest chef on The
Tony Dana Show and
You’re Invited, and she is a featured contributor to celebrations.com, expertvillage.com, SheKnows TV’s
Corner Kitchen and
Walmart’s Make it at
Home where she regularly dishes up in dispensable culinary counsel.
