Gruinard Island (/ˈɡrɪnjərd/ GRIN-yərd;Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Ghruinneard) is a small, oval-shaped Scottish island approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) long by 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) wide, located in Gruinard Bay, about halfway between Gairloch and Ullapool. At its closest point to the mainland it is just over 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) offshore. The island was made dangerous for all mammals by experiments with the anthrax bacterium, until it was decontaminated in the late 20th century.
The island was mentioned by Dean Munro who travelled the area in the mid 16th century. He wrote that it was Clan MacKenzie territory, was "full of woods", (a striking comparison with its treelessness today) and that it was "guid for fostering of thieves and rebellis".
The population was recorded as six in 1881, but Gruinard has been uninhabited since the 1920s.
Gruinard was the site of a biological warfare test by British military scientists from Porton Down in 1942, during the Second World War. At that time there was an investigation by the British government into the feasibility of an attack using anthrax. Given the nature of the weapon which was being developed, it was recognised that tests would cause widespread and long-lasting contamination of the immediate area by anthrax spores. In order to limit contamination a remote and uninhabited island was required. Gruinard was surveyed, deemed suitable and requisitioned from its owners by the British Government.
Wikimedia Commons (or simply Commons) is an online repository of free-use images, sound, and other media files. It is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Files from Wikimedia Commons can be used across all Wikimedia projects in all languages, including Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies, Wikisource, and Wikinews, or downloaded for offsite use. The repository contains over 30 million media files. In July 2013, the number of edits on Commons reached 100,000,000.
The project was proposed by Erik Möller in March 2004 and launched on September 7, 2004. A key motivation behind the setup of a central repository was the desire to reduce duplication of effort across the Wikimedia projects and languages, as the same file had to be uploaded to many different wikis separately before Commons was created.
Several sister projects (e.g. Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Spanish, Basque, Polish, Czech and Slovak Wikipedias) moved all their media content to Commons and stopped allowing local uploading. Some projects, such as the English Wikipedia, have more compliant copyright policy and allow to upload and keep files which are not acceptable at Commons, e.g. fair use images.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

Prototype weapons charged with anthrax spores were successfully used against animals. Inevitably the terrain became contaminated with anthrax and remained so until the mid-1980s. Anthrax Island earned its name in 1942 during British military biological warfare testing. Eighty sheep were placed on Gruinard Island off the coast of Scotland. Then, bombs filled with anthrax bacterium were dropped in the area to test the weapons effectiveness. The sheep began to die within days of exposure to the anthrax spores; however, the biological weapon was never used during World War II. Gruinard Island was eventually decontaminated with 280 tons of formaldehyde solution and declared safe in the 1990’s. In 2001, Inside Edition sent me to Gruinard Island after the anthrax attacks in America to see if any of the hearty anthrax spores may have survived. We wore HAZMAT suits and full-face respirator masks. Hazardous materials expert PJ Richardson took a soil sample that was an...

A tour of Gruinard Bay and Anthrax Island from Mellon Udrigle
During World War II, the British started their biological weapons program to counter suspected Japanese and German biological threats. The program's research focused on the viability and "range of spread" of anthrax spores when delivered with a conventional bomb. Testing was conducted on Gruinard Island, off the coast of Scotland. The program ceased when an anthrax outbreak occurred in a coastal town near the island. The island proved surprisingly difficult to decontaminate, the anthrax spores remained viable in the soil for over 36 years. Initially, the British attempted to burn the soil and vegetation, but soil samples still showed viable spores. In 1986, the government hired a contractor to decontaminate the island. The process consisted of saturating the soil with 280 tons of formaldeh...

Islands are especially popular among people looking for an exotic and adventurous vacation. But there is a great threat behind their beauty. 1.IZU ISLANDS, JAPAN The seven Izu Islands are a group of volcanic islands in the Fuji Volcanic Belt that stretches from north to south for 280 miles. A reek of sulfur cannot be avoided or ignored because of the area’s volcanic nature. People who live there were actually evacuated in 2000 (and once in 1953) because the levels of gas were through the roof. They were allowed back in five years later. Residents of Miyakejima, one of Japan's Izu Islands, must wear masks at all times. 2.SABA, NETHERLANDS The Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles chain is a special municipality of the Netherlands. Warning! This declassified film, Operation CAULDRON 1952, contains footage which some viewers may find upsetting. In 2008, the Ministry of Defence made it clear that the events portrayed in this 60 year old film [including the use of live animals] in no way represents current practice. This is a historical record of experimental UK Biological Warfare research procedures which were in use over 60 years ago, and should be viewed as such. Operation CAULDRON In 1951, proposals were made by the Microbiological Research Department, Porton Down (the UK Government's Chemical and Biological Warfare research facility) to conduct a large series of Biological Warfare (BW) experiments in the open air. This series of BW experiments, known to Porton Down scientists as field trials, involved the rele...

The virulent Ames strain, which was used in the 2001 anthrax attacks in the United States, has received the most news coverage of any anthrax outbreak. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060522798/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp;=1789&creative;=9325&creativeASIN;=0060522798&linkCode;=as2&tag;=tra0c7-20&linkId;=a622e60ac36a7d71632d695e17e4f495 The Ames strain contains two virulence plasmids, which separately encode for a three-protein toxin, called anthrax toxin, and a polyglutamic acid capsule. Nonetheless, the Vollum strain, developed but never used as a biological weapon during the Second World War, is much more dangerous. The Vollum (also incorrectly referred to as Vellum) strain was isolated in 1935 from a cow in Oxfordshire. This same strain was used during the Gruinard bioweapon...
An investigation into the deadly world of germ weapons, Anthrax War begins in New York in the days following 9/11. Anthrax-laced letters, mailed to media and U.S. senators, killed five people and spread fear and panic throughout the nation. For filmmaker Bob Coen, who was raised in Rhodesia where the white regime has been accused of unleashing anthrax against the black population, biological weapons have a deep personal meaning. He embarks on a journey that raises troubling questions about the FBI's investigation of the 21st century's first act of biological terrorism. Coen's investigation takes him from the U.S. to the U.K. and from the edge of Siberia to the tip of Africa. In a rare interview, Coen confronts "Doctor Death" Wouter Basson, who headed Project Coast, the South African apar...

Most forms of the disease are dangerous, and it affects most animals. It can be transmitted through contact with infected meat. Effective vaccines against anthrax are available, and some forms of the disease respond well to antibiotic treatment.
1931 Dr. Cornelius Rhoads, under the auspices of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Investigations, infects human subjects with cancer cells. He later goes on to establish the U.S. Army Biological Warfare facilities in Maryland, Utah, and Panama, and is named to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. While there, he begins a series of radiation exposure experiments on American soldiers and civilian hospital patients. 1932 The Tuskegee Syphilis Study begins. 200 black men diagnosed with syphilis are never told of their illness, are denied treatment, and instead are used as human guinea pigs in order to follow the progression and symptoms of the disease. They all subsequently die from syphilis, their families never told that they could have been treated. 1935 The Pellagra Incident. After mi...
