The Roman military was intertwined with the Roman state much more closely than in a modern European nation. Josephus describes the Roman people being as if they were "born ready armed," and the Romans were for long periods prepared to engage in almost continuous warfare, absorbing massive losses. For a large part of Rome's history, the Roman state existed as an entity almost solely to support and finance the Roman military.
The military's campaign history stretched over 1300 years and saw Roman armies campaigning as far East as Parthia (modern-day Iran), as far south as Africa (modern-day Tunisia) and Aegyptus (modern-day Egypt) and as far north as Britannia (modern-day England, south Scotland, and Wales). The makeup of the Roman military changed substantially over its history, from its early history as an unsalaried citizen militia to a later professional force. The equipment used by the military altered greatly in type over time, though there were very few technological improvements in weapons manufacture, in common with the rest of the classical world. For much of its history, the vast majority of Rome's forces were maintained at or beyond the limits of its territory, in order to either expand Rome's domain, or protect its existing borders.

Spatial analyses, in Gis-type environments, are used to develop fresh perspectives on the range of people who lived within the walls of these military establishments, the various industrial, commercial, domestic and leisure activities in which they and combat personnel were involved, and the socio-spatial organisation of these activities and these establishments. Roman Legion Army Documentary - Greatest Military Ever - Military Channel The Very early Roman military of the Roman kingdom as well as of the early republic (to c. 300 BC). During this period, when warfare primarily consisted of small-scale plundering-raids, it has actually been recommended that the Roman military complied with Etruscan or Greek models of organization as well as tools. The early Roman military was based upon a yearly levy. According to Michael Ivanovich Rostovtzeff, "the army included the whole population". The infantry rankings were filled with the lower classes while the cavalry, equites or celeres, were delegated to the patricians. This was doinged this because the wealthier could pay for horses. Additionally, the powerful authority throughout the stately period was ...

I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor) Much of the success of the Roman army can be attributed to the command structure also. Though after the Marius Reforms the army was much more organized and therefore more effective, the early Roman Republic army was still organized legibly, not into hordes. The Hastati and Principes were divided into ten groups of 120 men called maniples, and the Triarii into ten maniples of sixty men. There were ten maniples of Hastati and Principes in each legion, totaling 2400 men. The remaining force was made up of 1200 Velites. Each maniple had two centurions, in which the most experienced held the command of the maniple. A legate was in command of the whole legion consisting of 4200 men. Another part of the army's tac...
How was the life of a Roman soldier? How did they live? What did they eat? How much did they earn? The Marian reforms (of Gaius Marius) enlarged the centuries to 80 men, and grouped them into six-century "cohorts" (rather than two-century maniples). Each century had its own standard and was made up of ten units (contubernia) of eight men who shared a tent, a millstone, a mule and cooking pot. Following the reforms of the general Marius in the 2nd century BC, the legions took on the second, narrower meaning that is familiar in the popular imagination as close-order citizen heavy infantry.

Through evidence unearthed at the excavations, interviews with specialists, etchings, original illustrated graphics, and text narrated from the Roman historians, this show will reveal the test of wills and tactics that led to one of Rome’s major military disasters. Which were Ancient Rome's worst military defeats? Were they those that from our perspective changed history or the ones that the Romans held up as cautionary tales -- the ones that made them stronger? Here we look at The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (German: Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald, Hermannsschlacht or Varusschlacht), described as clades Variana (the Varian disaster) by Roman historians, took place in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE, when an alliance of Germanic tribes ambushed and decisively destroyed three Roman legions ...
