Boudica (/ˈbuːdᵻkə/; alternative spelling: Boudicca, also known as Boadicea /boʊdᵻˈsiːə/ and in Welsh as Buddug [ˈbɨ̞ðɨ̞ɡ]) (d. AD 60 or 61) was a queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire.
Boudica's husband Prasutagus ruled as a nominally independent ally of Rome and left his kingdom jointly to his daughters and the Roman emperor in his will. However, when he died his will was ignored, and the kingdom was annexed. Boudica was flogged, her daughters raped, and Roman financiers called in their loans.
In AD 60 or 61, when the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was campaigning on the island of Anglesey off the northwest coast of Wales, Boudica led the Iceni, the Trinovantes, and others in revolt. They destroyed Camulodunum (modern Colchester), earlier the capital of the Trinovantes but at that time a colonia, a settlement for discharged Roman soldiers and site of a temple to the former Emperor Claudius. Upon hearing of the revolt, Suetonius hurried to Londinium (modern London), the 20-year-old commercial settlement that was the rebels' next target.
Warrior Queen is a British television series made by Thames Television for ITV from 20 February to 27 March 1978.
Set in Britain under Roman rule, this historical drama starred Siân Phillips in the title role as Boudica, queen of the Iceni and chronicled her efforts to maintain the peace for her people and fight the Romans. Nigel Hawthorne played the Roman tax collector Catus Decianus.
A very youthful looking Michael Wood presents this interesting series from the 1970s. I discovered this broadcast preserved on an old, but pristine VHS tape. Unbelievably, the recording is dated March 1980.

Emma Powell commissioned Stephanie Young to write comedy for a voice demo. The brief was to create three, 30-second interviews with 'notable' women -- from literature or history. The interview had to close with the famous character being offended by a question, hauling back, slugging the interviewer and storming out. Full text below. Performed by Emma Powell, written by Stephanie Young. Sound design and recording by Raoul Brand. (Boudica via Sloane Street:) First of all I have to say -- oops! Haha, yes it really wasn't meant to be a complete RAZING of the city, not a SACKING. I was, well Daddy always said I had a biiiit of a temper and it's not that flogging and raping should go REWARDED. Boadicea
choir : Boadicea, behold the fate of the army you
controlled,
Did it quench your lust for blood, did it satisfy your
soul ?
Darkness fell upon the land,
the day the kingdom died,
the empire tore it’s grasping hand,
through our darkest night,
they robbed us, and raped us,
flogged us, betrayed us,
for our freedom,
for our kingdom
we will make a stand and
fight, fire with fire,
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, suddenly you’re sad and
sorry ,
Boadicea, did it please ya when the final battle
raged....
heaven’s on our side.....
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, how’d you miss your claim
to glory,
Boadicea, would you be a heroine if here today ?
Boadicea, behold the fate of the army you controlled,
Did it quench your lust for blood, did it satisfy your
soul ?
two hundred thousand arms to wield,
a wild and mindless might,
the sun rose on the battlefield,
to mock a woman’s pride,
they stabbed us, and shamed us,
burned us, and maimed us,
for our freedom,
for our kingdom
hear my call to arms and
fight, fire with fire,
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, suddenly you’re sad and
sorry ,
Boadicea, did it please ya when the final battle
raged....
heaven’s on our side.....
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, how’d you miss your claim
to glory,
Boadicea, would you be a heroine if here today ?
to avenge your king,
choir : In the name of Glory
to avenge your queen,
choir : the Iceni Glory
fight on !
fight on !
fight on, fight…..
or die !
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, suddenly you’re sad and
sorry ,
Boadicea, did it please ya when the final battle
raged....
Heaven’s on our side.....
choir : Boadicea, Boadicea, how’d you miss your claim
