Travis Orbin - First Cyclamen Session - "Never Ending Dream"
www.myspace.com A short while ago, a gentleman named Hayato Imanishi contacted me to see if I'd be interested in playing on a few of his band's tunes. It was a no-brainer, this stuff is killer! I had less than two weeks to 'Orbinate' Hayato's programmed drums and rehearse so tracking would go as smoothly as possible. We corresponded through e-mail to ensure that my parts were congruent with his vision; Hayato pays as much mind to nuances as me, it seems! He requested for me to track the drums at my buddy Taylor Larson's studio. Taylor managed to achieve some of the best drum tones I've ever heard for prog/metal music. The first tune is "Never Ending Dream." Towards the middle, it features a lengthy section in which a tom-tom ostinato is crescendoed over a passage of more than twenty bars. It was quite hard to execute, and after I flub it the video re-enters with my playing of the last few bars. I'm whacking the crap out of the toms by then, haha. Travis Orbin - First Cyclamen Session - "Djent! Djent!"
www.myspace.com Next up is "Djent! Djent!" and I managed to get a solid take in completion. It was tough slamming those 16th note rimshots down at the tune's tempo. There's an intriguing pattern occurring around 0:58 that is comprised of a stack cymbal and high-pitched crash being played in a pattern in 3-8 (each), but within different parts of the bar(s). At the end, Taylor automated the room mics so they'd increase in the mix; this is something similar to what Hayato had programmed. Travis Orbin - Second Cyclamen Session - "The Seeker"
Travis Orbin - Second Cyclamen Session - "The Seeker"
www.myspace.com Next up is "The Seeker," a swift tune with a big hardcore-punk influence. The drum set intro is pretty wacky; polyrhythms, double bass, fast fusion-esque licks and the kitchen sink are all pretty much present (this was Hayato's request, hehe). The chorus/B section possesses a challenging sticking pattern. In Hayato's original composition, the tom-tom pattern ensued even on the downbeat along with the crash cymbal. I told him that this was possible if I utilized double strokes. I used this as a basis and then composed a tom melody that also incorporated dual hi-hat chokes and crash cymbal tradeoffs. It's punctuated intermittently by fill-ins. The pattern took a lot out of my hands; much force is necessary to get those loosely-tuned toms to sing with double strokes! My grip muscles would occasionally cramp up, heh. The bridge/C section is real intense and syncopated. There's an eighth-note quintuplet occurring around 1:32 that will sound interesting when layered against the vocals. Speaking of (for all of those who are inquiring), Hayato does plan on re-recording all of the instruments on top of my drum tracks for an official release. The outro features some preposterously fast fill-ins: a 16th-note septuplet and 32nd notes. I wanted it to make it as intense as possible and that's what came out of me. Travis Orbin - Second Cyclamen Session - "Senjyu"
Travis Orbin - Second Cyclamen Session - "Senjyu"
www.myspace.com Finally, there's "Senjyu." I approached this piece a bit differently. I wanted a big, earthy sound so I switched my beaters to the felt side and 'upsized' most of my cymbals. In place of my 21" ride is another 21" ride with a heavier weight and instead of my usual 19" and 18" crashes I opted for my 21" DRK ride and 19" MDM crash (respectively). The chinese cymbal is the same, and the right-side hi-hats are my 14" MDM hats. The left-side hi-hats are a pair of 18 inchers (!), constructed out of two crashes (the top being my 18" MDM crash). I wanted to complement the mood of this tune as best as I could and I found it challenging; I really had to dig deep for parts that I liked that also melded well with everything else. From crescendoing the crash cymbals (er... one ride, and one crash, hah) in the beginning to the brief crescendo on the china at 3:54 before the vocals kick in, to the final accent (more on that later) the whole piece has sort of a forward motion. One should refer to the transcription to get a more detailed feel of the dynamics that I had in mind. When the drums first enter at 2:00, there's a neat groove that Hayato composed that superimposes a four feel over the six feel. I kept this and complemented the six feel with hi-hat splashes on the big hats every three quarter notes. There's a 16th-note quintuplet fill-in that creates some tension and marks the start of louder dynamics at 3:36 and there's an eleven-tuplet fill-in into an 8th-note ...

Travis Orbin - Second Cyclamen Session - "Princess Mononoke"
www.myspace.com I recorded another batch of tunes for UK-based Cyclamen and they're even more varied than the previous session. I'd like to publicly convey my gratitude to Hayato Imanishi for allowing me to express myself through his amazing compositions for a second time! "Princess Mononoke" kicks things off, with its angular riffage and soaring vocals. There's an interesting 'over-the-count' polyrhythm on the bass drum (three 16th-note triplets starting on the 'ah' of the beat) at 0:13 and 1:07. Overall, there is much cymbal interplay. Travis Orbin - Third Cyclamen Session - "Thirst"
Travis Orbin - Third Cyclamen Session - "Thirst"
www.myspace.com Here's another filmed session for UK-based Cyclamen. It's always an absolute pleasure working with Hayato. These tracks were recorded at my friend Taylor Larson's new studio digs (Oceanic Recording); this is the third session that I've completed there. I tried a really rad new camera angle but -- unfortunately -- the thing shook uncontrollably the more I played. Much of the footage is unusable; I incorporated what I could. I should have filmed myself playing a bit and checked it out... lesson learned. My apologies! Anyway, "Thirst" will be featured (with my performance) on another unique Cyclamen EP. It is a brief, fiery tune that features some of my more intense playing. The big section in the middle promotes a tempo change but it's just a giant metric modulation. The snare roll at 1:25 is all rimshots and is excruciatingly difficult. The cymbal accents at the end transition from a quarter note pulse to 5-16 to -- once the ride is implemented -- 3-8 (or 6-16). It lends a 'widening' feeling. Full drum set transcription: s26.photobucket.com Tempo = 145 BPM myspace.com/taylorlarsonrecording myspace.com/travisorbin

Travis Orbin - First Cyclamen Session - "Forgotten Sky" (RE-UPLOAD)
Recently, it dawned on me that all of my footage from my previous video clips is cached in iMovie. I'm especially fond of this tune and decided to redo it with continuous playback. This was originally uploaded in November of 2009. Thanks to everyone that commented, 'liked' and 'favorited' the clip. Here is a slightly revised video description that correlates to the new version: www.myspace.com Finally, there's "Forgotten Sky." This one is groovy, sexy, and dark and mysterious all at once. The choruses and bridge are beautiful and the whole piece is pulled off with much conviction. There are a myriad of very minor details that I wanted to nail to complement the mood of the tune. Some of the fill-ins during the verses are played delicately to create tension. The entire first chorus is played more delicately in general with less crash strikes than the second and some pedal hi-hat action. The second chorus promotes more crash strikes, kick drums and fill-ins to heighten the dynamics and give the whole piece forward motion. There's even a brief metric modulation that begins at 3:04 to give a little push into the bridge. The ending is played very intensely with open hi-hat strikes and double bass spurts. Following this is a pretty neat pattern-- the kick drum starts with six beats and builds with two additional beats after every bar, following the bass guitar. This leads into the last fill-in at 4:38. After that, I'm beating the living crap out of everything and there's a ...

Travis Orbin - Third Cyclamen Session - "Comfort"
www.myspace.com The third and final tune of the latest session for UK-based Cyclamen is a upbeat, groovy number called "Comfort." I especially love the subtle interplay of female and male vocals. I saw my role in this one as more of a 'nuance-enhancer,' as Hayato's beautiful kick/snare groove was already in place. I added ghosts, dual hi-hat work (strikes and foot splashes) and the transition to the ride halfway through each verse. I also added some fill-ins at the end to give it a bit more momentum and power. For the visual component, I incorporated a third camera angle to highlight some of the deceivingly difficult foot work. Daily Origami: 049 - Cyclamen
Today's origami lesson is forty-ninth in the series. Today we will make the flowers that were shown in the last lesson's basket, cyclamen. This flower is pretty easy to make and when you make a lot it creates a really pretty display.

'The Cyclamen', sung by Esther Ofarim
'The Cyclamen', sung by Esther Ofarim
My colourful, winter-flowering cyclamen made me think of this charming Israeli folk song - maybe an appropriate choice to warm and brighten the dreary January days! Esther Ofarim (she of 'Cinderella-Rockerfella' fame!) recorded this in 1963 with an anonymous orchestra conducted by Shimon Cohen. The Hebrew translates as: Under the rock grows like a wonder A very cute Cyclamen. The shining sun kisses it And crowns her with a pink crown. "Cyclamen", the bird whistles "Look at me for a minute Beautiful Cyclamen hiding under the rock Hiding from every thing." Bat sheva went out for a walk; The morning was bright. She collected every flower and plant, Her mouth full with a song. Bat sheva sings; Cyclamen speeds up and Peeps out for a moment: "Who is looking at me here"? Bat sheva gets closer slowly. Bat sheva gets off the rock, A beautiful cyclamen on her chest A bird whistles, the wind fondles And this song comes to an end.

Travis Orbin - Third Cyclamen Session - "Devoid"
Travis Orbin - Third Cyclamen Session - "Devoid"
www.myspace.com Next in the latest Cyclamen session is a tune titled "Devoid." Cryptic, haunting, somber, and with its share of what appears to be a minimalist approach, the first minute and a half (there's another 90 seconds before the drums enter where the drums are tacet and only piano is incorporated) is terrific. Then, guitars awaken the track and propel it to Tarantino-soundtrack-worthiness, haha. My drum part is chock-full of polyrhythms and other interesting syncopation. My right-side ride is courtesy of TRX Cymbals, of course, and it's an 18" DRK series flat ride. Don't call the jazz police on me because I crash on it! Cyclamen - Let Go
Cyclamen - Let Go
Interesting band I found recently. Be sure to check out their myspace for more music! www.myspace.com Lyrics translated: The new path that lies in front of you It's always been there for you - for long time Hit by waves of sadness and regret from the loss You just stare at the past distancing away No matter how much you want them back They will never come back to you To embrace the future in front of you Throw away the past and start looking forward again To seize the future that shines for you So let's starting walking again By stopping to look back into the past So let's starting walking again By stopping to look back into the past To the light that awaits for you (English) I won't look back I won't look back again To seize the future that lies before you Look up to the stars once again To seize the future that lies before you Look up to the stars once again ----------------------------------- -Copyright Law. 107.
