A trade union (British English / Australian English / New Zealand English / South African English / Caribbean English; also trades union), labour union (Canadian English), or labor union (American English) is an organization of workers who have come together to achieve common goals such as protecting the integrity of its trade, improving safety standards, achieving higher pay and benefits such as health care and retirement, increasing the number of employees an employer assigns to complete the work, and better working conditions. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers. The most common purpose of these associations or unions is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment". This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies.

The International Labour Organization says 168-million around the world remain trapped in child labor with half of them doing dangerous jobs. The UN agency says Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest incidence of the widespread phenomenon and that Agriculture remains the guiltiest sector. But it also says current international standards have reduced the numbers by one-third in the last decade. The International Labor Organization estimates that 168 million children are in the labor force worldwide. In Nepal, a nation of 28 million people, 1.6 million children between the ages of five and 17 are forced to work – or 21 percent of all children in the country. As many as 60,000 of them work in brick kilns, according to Global Fairness Initiative, a Washington-based international development organization. Many work up to 15 hours a day in dangerous conditions for little to no pay. -

Child labour in urban areas has seen increases in recent years due to the involvement of children and adolescents in informal activities, especially in the trade and service sectors. On the one hand, this phenomenon is related to school evasion and lack of alternatives offered by the labour market for adult family members. On the other, it relates to the current demands of consumer society and the process of building identity through the acquisition of products, a scenario that leads children and adolescents to join the labour market precociously in search of economic autonomy. Unemployment of the household heads has also aggravated the problem.
Other cases include family businesses, in which the use of child labour is often caused by the costs of formalization of these businesses, unemployment of the household heads, low salaries, lack of access to quality public services and difficulties in having these businesses inspected by the competent authorities.
• How can social protection policies and specific legislations support formalization of the labour market and replace informal child and adolescent labour with adult registered work?
• How can the implementation of policies focused on the labour market and vocational training contribute to the elimination of child labour in urban businesses?
• How can policies that promote the formalization of family businesses assist in tackling child labour in urban areas?
• How can education policies and the operation of the education system as a whole make schools more attractive than the world of work while respecting the demands of urban reality? How can the transition mechanisms from school to work be improved?

On October 18th, 2013, in Geneva, Switzerland, the Anti-Trafficking Week was launched at the request of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the ILO, the Organization of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
During the opening, a panel discussion brought together several eminent legal experts to discuss the legal definitions of human trafficking and various forms of human exploitation, including slavery, servitude, forced labour and bonded labour.
Jean Allain, Professor of Public International Law and expert on slavery, Anne Gallagher, Australian lawyer, expert on human trafficking, Babu Mathew, Professor and expert on bonded labour, and Thiago Gurjao Alves Ribeiro, Labour Prosecutor in Mato Grosso, Brazil , widely discussed legal definitions and more precisely the relationship, differences, overlap or hierarchy between and among the concepts of trafficking, forced labour, slavery and servitude, with the participation of the UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, Ms. Gulnara Shahinian.
The implications of the existing international legal framework and the lack of conceptual clarity for international cooperation and policy development were also debated.
