Ian Tyson Tells The Story Behind 'Four Strong Winds'
In this "I Was There" segment, Canadian folk legend Ian Tyson tells the story of how he wrote "Four Strong Winds" — a certified classic, which would go on to become a hit in Canada when he recorded it as one half of Ian & Sylvia.
Eighty years old and still going strong, Tyson is touring western Canada and the United States this summer and fall. See his tour dates here:

Four Strong Winds
Who is Ian Tyson? From Wiki:
Ian Dawson Tyson CM, AOE (born 25 September 1933) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, best known for his song "Four Strong Winds". He was also one half of the duo Ian & Sylvia.
Tyson was born to British immigrants in Victoria in 1933, and grew up in Duncan B.C.[1] A rodeo rider in his late teens and early twenties, he took up the guitar while recovering from an injury he sustained in a fall. He has named fellow Canadian country artist Wilf Carter as a musical influence.[2] He made his singing debut at the Heidelberg Café in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1956 and played with a rock and roll band, "The Sensational Stripes." After graduation from the Vancouver School of Art in 1958, Tyson moved to Toronto, Ontario where he commenced a job as a commercial artist. There he performed in local clubs and in 1959 began to sing on occasion with Sylvia Fricker. By early 1959 Tyson and Fricker were performing part-time at the Village Corner as "Ian & Sylvia." The pair became a full-time musical act in 1961 and married four years later. In 1969, they formed and fronted the group The Great Speckled Bird. Residing in southern Alberta, Tyson toured all over the world.
From 1971 to 1975, he hosted a national television program, The Ian Tyson Show, on CTV, based on the 1970–71 season music show Nashville North, later titled Nashville Now.[3]
As of 1980, Tyson became associated with Calgary music manager and producer Neil MacGonigill. Tyson decided to concentrate on country and cowboy music, resulting in the well-received 1983 album, Old Corrals and Sagebrush,[4] released on Columbia Records.
In 1989, Tyson was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
In 2005, CBC Radio One listeners chose his song "Four Strong Winds" as the greatest Canadian song of all time on the series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version. There was strong momentum for him to be nominated the Greatest Canadian, but he fell short. He has been a strong influence on many Canadian artists, including Neil Young, who recorded "Four Strong Winds" for Comes a Time (1978). Johnny Cash would also record the same song for American V: A Hundred Highways (2006). Judy Collins recorded a version of his popular song, "Someday Soon", in 1968.
Bob Dylan and the Band recorded his song "One Single River" in Woodstock, NY in 1967. The recording can be found on the unreleased Genuine Basement Tapes, vol. I.
In 2006, Tyson sustained irreversible scarring to his vocal cords as a result of a concert at the Havelock Country Jamboree followed a year later by a virus contracted during a flight to Denver.[6] This resulted in a notable loss of the remarkable quality and range he was known for; he has self-described his new sound as "gravelly".[7] Notwithstanding, he released the album "From Yellowhead to Yellowstone and Other Love Stories" in 2008 to high critical praise. He was nominated for a 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards for Solo Artist of the Year. The album includes a song about Canadian hockey broadcasting icon Don Cherry and the passing of his wife Rose, a rare Tyson cover written by Toronto songwriter Jay Aymar.
Tyson's first marriage, to Sylvia Fricker Tyson, ended in an amicable[12] divorce in 1975. Their son Clay (Clayton Dawson Tyson,[13] born 1966[14]) was also a musical performer, and then moved to a career modifying racing bikes.[15][16]
Ian Tyson married Twylla Dvorkin in 1986, and their daughter Adelita was born c. 1987.[15][17] Tyson's second marriage ended in divorce which was made official in early 2008, several years after separating from Dvorkin.

Welcome back for Part 2 of our 3-Part tour of the human brain, guided by neuroscientists Mayim Bialik and Dr. Heather Berlin. Join host Neil deGrasse Tyson, co-host Eugene Mirman, guests Bill Nye, Michael Ian Black and Paul Rudd and the audience at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as we learn about NASA’s studies on neuroplasticity in space and how adaptable the brain is. Get an update from the cutting edge of neuroscience, where mapping the underlying structure of the brain is just the beginning of understanding how to fix it when it’s broken or malformed. You’ll learn about the new technique called optogenetics, which injects a virus carrying photo-receptive genes from algae into the brain to monitor and control individual neurons, and about neuroprosthetics which could help blind people to see. Find out why sleep is necessary and how it impacts memory and Alzheimer’s Disease. Learn about the difference between how the brain stores procedural memory and declarative memory. The tour concludes next Wednesday.

It was an interesting week here at TG Central. I got a little behind due to jury duty, maybe more on that at another time, but had a lot of fun over the weekend, including a short, impromptu set (well, 2 tunes) at a local restaurant, a nice dinner at home with the family, and a trip to Santa Cruz watching some surfers out on a beautiful January day, including a short visit with Ed Claxton. So enough about my week, stuff I mentioned on the News included some of the new releases, solutions to dropping picks, the difficulty I have in determining levels to lessons, a little more info on the creations of Pumpkin Pie and The Good Life, and some thoughts on pieces that don't have to be done note-for-note, like "And Winter Glows."
There was quite a bit of playing, at least partial versions of things like That's The Way I've Alway Heard It Should Be by Carly Simon, along with many I did not identify. I'll leave that up to you, maybe a prize this week for the most correct answers.
Other new lessons included Vanessa's contribution of Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran, and a Fly video with Sandy working on Four Strong Winds by Ian Tyson, particularly an instrumental intro to spruce it up a bit.
The rest I will leave to you to discover and enjoy (hopefully).
Stay Tuned & In Touch,
Neil

Neil Percival Young, (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. He began performing in a group covering Shadows instrumentals in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield together with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, and later joined Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1969. He released his first album in 1968 and has since forged a successful and acclaimed solo career, spanning over 45 years and 35 studio albums, with a continuous and uncompromising exploration of musical styles. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website describes Young as "one of rock and roll's greatest songwriters and performers". He was inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, first as a solo artist in 1995, and second as a member of Buffalo Springfield in 1997
Comes a Time (October 2, 1978), Young's first entirely new solo recording since the mid-1970s, also featured Larson and Crazy Horse. The album became Young's most commercially accessible album in quite some time and marked a return to his folk roots, including a cover of Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds", a song Young associated with his childhood in Canada. Another of the album's songs, "Lotta Love", was also recorded by Larson, with her version reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1979. In 1978, much of the filming was done for Young's film Human Highway, which took its name from a song featured on Comes a Time. Over four years, Young would spend $3,000,000 of his own money on production. This also marked the beginning of his brief collaboration with the post-punk band Devo, whose members appeared in the film
Young's two accompanying albums Rust Never Sleeps (July 2, 1979; new material, culled from live recordings, but featuring studio overdubs) and Live Rust (November 19, 1979) (a mixture of old and new, and a genuine concert recording) captured the two sides of the concerts, with solo acoustic songs on side A, and fierce, uptempo, electric songs on side B. A movie version of the concerts, also called Rust Never Sleeps (1979), was directed by Young under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey. Young worked with rock artist Jim Evans to create the poster art for the film, using the Star Wars Jawas as a theme. Young's work since Harvest (1972) had alternated between being rejected by mass audiences and being seen as backward-looking by critics, sometimes both at once, and now he was suddenly viewed as relevant by a new generation, who began to discover his earlier work. Readers and critics of Rolling Stone voted him Artist of the Year for 1979 (along with The Who), selected Rust Never Sleeps as Album of the Year, and voted him Male Vocalist of the Year as well. The Village Voice named Rust Never Sleeps as the year's winner in the Pazz & Jop Poll, a survey of nationwide critics, and honored Young as the Artist of the Decade. The Warner Music Vision release on VHS of Rust Never Sleeps in 1987 had a running time of 116 minutes, and although fully manufactured in Germany, was initially imported from there by the markets throughout Europe.

There’s no escaping the Zombie Apocalypse when Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews Max Brooks, the world’s leading “authority” on these nonexistent killers. The author of World War Z discusses fast and slow zombies and the latest in “zombie science” — mathematical models of how a zombie virus would spread and a Harvard doctor’s book about zombie brain patterns. You’ll find out why a cemetery is the safest place to be in a zombie apocalypse, and what’s inside Eugene Mirman’s “evil beef jerky.” But it’s not all fun and games: Dr. Ian Lipkin, Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia, is on hand to warn us about the really scary stuff: viruses like HIV, SARS, Ebola, Cholera, Influenza and a million others yet to be discovered. Are we all doomed? You’ll have to wait until Part 2 to find out.

At Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, Profesor Ian Robertson talks about his new book, The Winner Effect.
The Winner Effect investigates what makes a winner, why some succeed in life and business, whereas others fail, and why few individuals become supremely powerful, while many remain powerless. Through scientific and psychological analysis, Ian Robertson shows how success affects the inner workings of the brain and explores the implications for this on individuals -- in business, on the public stage and in family life.
'The winner effect' is a term used in biology to describe how an animal that has won a few fights against weak opponents is much more likely to win later bouts against stronger contenders. As Ian Robertson reveals, it applies to humans, too: achievement changes the chemistry of the brain making people more focused, smarter, more confident and more aggressive. The effect is as strong as a drug, and the more an individual wins, the more they will go on to win. In fact, winning can become physically addictive.
By understanding what the mental and physical changes are that take place in the brain of a 'winner', how they happen, and why they affect some people more than others, Ian Robertson shows why some people attain and handle success better than others. He explains what makes a winner -- and a loser -- and how knowing this can help to understand better the behaviour of one's colleagues, employees, family, and friends.
For those interested in the rise to pre-eminence of figures like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, The Winner Effect is invaluable. At a time when entrepreneurship is so fascinating to many, the book sheds new light on the physiological and psychological causes for rising to the top. For readers interested in science, education, business, politics and psychology this is a definitive book for a 'go-getting' age.
Newsworthy angles presented by Ian Robertson include the conclusion that had there been more women in boardrooms, it might have prevented risk-taking, such as that which occurred at corporations like Enron. Individual case studies featured in the book include: Picasso, Caravaggio, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Frank Bruno, Mike Tyson, Enron, Fred Goodwin, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
About Ian Robertson
A neuroscientist and trained clinical psychologist, Ian Robertson is an international expert on neuropsychology. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, and formerly Fellow of Hughes Hall, Cambridge. Ian holds visiting professorships at the University of Toronto, University College London, and the University of Wales. Ian is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and has published over 250 scientific articles in leading journals. He is also author and editor of ten scientific books, including the leading international textbook on cognitive rehabilitation (Cognitive Neurorehabilitation), and three books for the general reader (Mind Sculpture: Unleashing Your Brain's Potential; The Mind's Eye: The Essential Guide to Boosting Your Mental; Emotional and Physical Powers, and Stay Sharp with the Mind Doctor: Practical Strategies to Boost Your Brain Power). Ian is a regular keynote speaker at conferences on brain function throughout the world.
