Whangarei (/ˌfɒŋəˈreɪ/, alt. /ˌwɒŋəˈreɪ/; Māori: [faŋaˈɾɛi]) is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. It is part of the Whangarei District, a local body created in 1989 to administer both the city proper and its hinterland from the former Whangarei City, Whangarei County and Hikurangi Town councils. The city population was estimated to be 55,400 at the June 2015 estimate, up from 47,000 in 2001. The wider Whangarei area had an estimated population of 85,900 in 2015.
The Whangarei urban area is spread throughout the valleys of the surrounding area and has several suburbs: Kamo, Springs Flat, Tikipunga, Three Mile Bush, Otangarei, Mairtown, Regent, Kensington, and Whau Valley lie to the north of the city. South and west of the city centre are Morningside, Raumanga, Maunu, Horahora, Woodhill, and the Avenues, and to the east are Riverside, Sherwood Rise, Onerahi, and Parihaka.
The Māori iwi Ngāpuhi occupied Whangarei from the early 19th century, and the Te Parawhau hapū lived at the head of the harbour. Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first Europeans to contemplate the Whangarei Harbour entrance. On 15 November 1769 they caught about one hundred fish there which they classified as "bream" (probably snapper) prompting Cook to name the area Bream Bay.
The Whangarei District is located in Northland, New Zealand. Whangarei City is the principal town and the district seat. Other towns include Hukerenui, Hikurangi, Titoki, Portland, Ruakaka and Waipu. The district contains a large amount of rural land, including beaches such as Ngunguru, game fishing mecca Tutukaka, a variety of beaches along Whangarei Harbour, as well as Matakohe or Limestone Island in the Harbour, now subject to ecological restoration. The main airport for the district is Whangarei Airport.
The district extends as far south as Bream Bay, north towards the Cape Brett Peninsula, and west almost to Waipoua Forest. It also includes the Hen and Chicken Islands and the Poor Knights Islands. The mayor of Whangarei District is Sheryl Mai.
The district population is 85,900 from the June 2015 estimate.
Finance & Policy Analyst, Larry Mitchell gave a presentation about serious financial issues facing the Whangarei District Council (WDC) and its ratepayers on September 5th, 2012. His was a warning and as Cameron Slater put it: "Larry Mitchell likes to kick local government in the teeth." It seems he is not popular with poorly performing Councils - he exposes them. He believes the Whangarei District Council is in very poor shape financially and that Council is covering up its true state of affairs. This appeared to be confirmed by a former Whangarei District Council employee, Bill Harris, who spoke about his frustrating attempts to elucidate an answer to a question about Council debt. Mitchell believes we should be looking at what is sustainable and affordable. He has released league t...
