A war memorial is a building, monument, statue or other edifice to celebrate a war or victory, or (predominating in modern times) to commemorate those who died or were injured in a war.
For most of human history war memorials were erected to commemorate great victories. In Napoleon's day, the dead were shoveled into mass, unmarked graves. The Arc de Triomphe in Paris and Nelson's Column in London contain no names of those killed.
However, by the end of the nineteenth century, it was common for regiments in the British Army to erect monuments to their comrades who had died in small Imperial Wars and these memorials would list their names. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 was the first war in Europe in which rank-and-file soldiers were commemorated in war memorials. Every soldier was granted a permanent resting-place as part of the terms of the Treaty of Frankfurt (1871). By the early twentieth century some towns and cities in the United Kingdom raised the funds to commemorate the men from their communities who had fought and died in the Second Anglo-Boer War.
The Korean War (in South Korean Hangul: 한국전쟁, Hanja: 韓國戰爭, Hanguk Jeonjaeng, "Korean War"; in North Korean Chosungul: 조국해방전쟁, Joguk Haebang Jeonjaeng, "Fatherland Liberation War"; 25 June 1950 – 27 July 1953) was a war between North and South Korea, in which a United Nations force led by the United States of America fought for the South, and China fought for the North, which was also assisted by the Soviet Union. The war arose from the division of Korea at the end of World War II and from the global tensions of the Cold War that developed immediately afterwards.
Korea was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the closing days of World War II. In August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and—by agreement with the United States—occupied Korea north of the 38th parallel. U.S. forces subsequently occupied the south and Japan surrendered. By 1948, two separate governments had been set up. Both governments claimed to be the legitimate government of Korea, and neither side accepted the border as permanent. The conflict escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces—supported by the Soviet Union and China—invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. On that day, the United Nations Security Council recognized this North Korean act as invasion and called for an immediate ceasefire. On 27 June, the Security Council adopted S/RES/83: Complaint of aggression upon the Republic of Korea and decided the formation and dispatch of the UN Forces in Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the defense of South Korea, with the United States providing 88% of the UN's military personnel.
World War I (WWI or WW1), also known as the First World War, or the Great War, was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. Over 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war (including the victims of a number of genocides), a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents' technological and industrial sophistication, and the tactical stalemate caused by trench warfare, a grueling form of warfare in which the defender held the advantage. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, and paved the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved.
The war drew in all the world's economic great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom/British Empire, France and the Russian Empire) versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Although Italy was a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive, against the terms of the alliance. These alliances were reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers.

The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war.
The Australian War Memorial is Australia's national memorial to the members of all its armed forces and supporting organisations who have died or participated in the wars of the Commonwealth of Australia. The memorial includes an extensive national military museum. The Australian War Memorial was opened in 1941, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant memorials of its type in the world. The Memorial is located in Australia's capital, Canberra. It is the northern terminus of the city's ceremonial land axis, which stretches from Parliament House on Capital Hill along a line passing through the summit of the cone-shaped Mount Ainslie to the northeast. No continuous roadway links the two points, but there is a clear line of sight from the front balcony of Parliament House to the ...

Today marks 100 years since New Zealand troops joined world war one's Battle of Somme in France. The battle was the bloodiest battle of the First World War which lasted nearly five months and wounded more than a million men. A short service to commemorate the event took place at Auckland's War Memorial Museum this morning with an official ceremony set to be held at the Pukeahu War Memorial in Wellington on Sunday.

The Basic Concept of the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum In late March 1945, a fierce battle such as has rarely been seen in history took place on these islands. The "Typhoon of Steel" that lasted for ninety days disfigured mountains, destroyed much of the cultural legacy, and claimed the precious lives of upward of 200,000 people. The Battle of Okinawa was the only ground fighting fought on Japanese soil and was also the largest-scale campaign of the Asia-Pacific War. Even countless Okinawan civilians were fully mobilized. A significant aspect of the Battle of Okinawa was the great loss of civilian life. At more than 100,000 civilian losses far outnumbered the military death toll. Some were blown apart by shells, some finding themselves in a hopeless situation were driven to sui...

On Monday, September 12, filmmakers Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky came to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to preview their new film, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War. This documentary describes the remarkable story of Americans Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a minister and a social worker, who planned many daring and secret rescue missions in 1939 to save scores of refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. Watch their discussion with Museum Director, Sara Bloomfield. In telling the story of the Sharps, the film prompts us to consider what we might sacrifice to help others.
Just a few subway stations to the south of the city centre of Seoul is a large museum covering the centuries of conflict on the Korean peninsula: The War Memorial of Korea. When I arrived I thought it mainly covered the Korean War, but to my surprise this is only a part of the exhibition, so ample time has to be allocated to manage to go through everything (and I did not manage). The Korean War exhibition is very impressing, but there is also a lot about the participation in the Vietnam War and in modern peace keeping operations. South Korea has for many years been forced to lead an activist foreign policy mainly due to the many problems with its neighbors. Outside the museum is a large selection of tanks and airplanes among other a B-52 bomber and a patrol boat on display thoroughly sho...

On August 6, 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in human history. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is museum located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in central Hiroshima, Japan dedicated to documenting the atomic bombing that occurred with the additional aim of world peace. The museum was established in August 1955 with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall (now the International Conference Center Hiroshima). It is the most popular of Hiroshima's destinations for school field-trips from all over Japan and for international visitors. 53 million people had visited the museum fr...
Brigadier General Robert Doughty retired in July 2005 after 40 years of service in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1965 and received his PhD from Kansas University in 1979. He served in a variety of assignments in the United States, Europe, and Vietnam, and his awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. He served as the Head of the Department of History at the U.S. Military Academy from 1985 until 2005. Doughty makes a point that rarely in military history has a commander or an army made so many mistakes and escaped defeat than in the case of the French and General Joffre prior to and during the opening months of World War I. Doughty highlights the numerous mistakes made by the French military comm...

Good, have I done good?
I fell on command
Give me my first and last medal
Observed in ritual behind the door
A heavy ivory white door
Where I've come off my hinges
Fire underground, I murdered a sentry there
Without wanting to
Wasn't nothing else to do
Saw a squad of deserters hung from an oak
Saw officers shot from their saddles
Through driving snow and through black smoke
With a pack of feral dogs snapping at my hooves
Eyes rolled back in their heads
The blank blessed eyesight of the dead
Entire battalions snuffed like a spark
Beat like a heart
Drowned by an ocean
Don't tell me the ending of the play
Don't make me look
Look in the mirror
