In December of 2012 I put HD cameras on the entire length of the Waimakariri Gorge. Now you can follow along on a Gorge trip with me, and learn all the easiest lines from the comfort of your own home. The river was at around 100cumecs for this trip which is pretty typical for this time of year, but a bit higher than what it might normally be on Coast to Coast race day in February. We decided to go from Arrowtown to Cromwell for a day trip then I decided to take a look at the Nevis road, the Cromwell Info office told me how to get there and said it was fine. It was raining by the time we got to it and progressively got wetter as we drove over the road. The worst part of the road was at the Garsten end where we did come across a couple of muddy patches which could have been worse had there been more rain. There were about 30 creek crossings and these two were slowly rising the further we went in with the heavy rain we were having. The sign at the top said highest drivable road in NZ at 1300 Metres, but we were a bit higher than that on the Molesworth trip going up to a radio tower.
