KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is the long-distance passenger train brand of KiwiRail, previously Tranz Scenic (1995—2011) and InterCity Rail (1987—1995).
The first branding of long-distance trains was as InterCity Rail, in 1987, renamed Tranz Scenic in 1995.
As part of a restructuring programme, in November 2001 Tranz Scenic was incorporated as stand-alone subsidiary Tranz Scenic (2001) Ltd. Tranz Rail sold 50% of Tranz Scenic to two directors of the Victoria, Australia, rail operator West Coast Railway for $33 million. The sale included long-distance passenger rolling stock and ten diesel locomotives of the DC class (reclassified DCP), and two EF class electric locomotives. Tranz Rail was taken over by Australian transport firm Toll Holdings in 2003, and in July 2004 the 50% share of Tranz Scenic was purchased by Toll, as one of the West Coast Railway directors had died and the business was not performing adequately.
In July 2012 it was revealed that KiwiRail was considering selling the remaining services.
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.

A number of variants on the Overlander TV adverts including Steam Engine Saturdays, The Saving of the Overerlander train, the then Tranz Coastal variants as well as finally the Tranz Alpine, and Tranz Alpine Steam Saturdays! It's a case of "Spot The Difference" in pricing on some but if you can make it to the end - the last few adverts are worth it!

Settling into our assigned seats to cross the Southern Alps into Arthur's Pass Nat'l Park.
This is some footage taken on Kiwi Rail Coastal Pacific line. The track follows the east coast of the upper South Island, New Zealand, from Christchurch to Picton. The train consists of 3 new AK passenger carriages, a cafe van, a open-air viewing and luggage vans which entered service on 2 November 2011. The carriages are hauled by a NZR DC class locomotive. The trip is about 348 km and takes around 5 and a quarter hours. The highlight is the rugged, yet beautiful Kaikoura coast region with it's many tunnels and sea views. The open air observation carriage is the place to be, and personally I preferred the early train (7:00am to 12:15pm), the sunrise was very nice and there was less people and kids on the train. It has been a long time since I've traveled by rail and it was great fun.

In this (the second video) taken on an Autumn visit to the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (Cog Railway) we admire the stunning scenery far below, enhanced by the beautiful autumn colors, we also take a closer look at the wonderful little steam engines taking visitors to the summit station at Rothorn.
In part 2 (Springfield to Arthurs Pass), see all the viaducts, bridges and tunnels from the driver’s cab. After Springfield the scenery becomes really dramatic as our train follows the Waimakariri River gorge, we cross spindly viaducts over deep ravines, around every corner another awesome vista is revealed. This section of the journey is why the TranzAlpine is one of world’s most scenic train rides. Sit back and enjoy this ride with me.

Enjoy a trip on one of Kiwi Rails "Scenic Journeys" aboard the "Coastal Pacific" train from Picton to Christchurch, New Zealand. Part 1 covers the line from Picton to Lake Grassmere Salt Works, taking in the Awatere River double deck bridge, the steep grade to Dashwood Pass and the purple evaporation ponds at Grassmere. This journey is a must for rail fans visiting South Island and a great way for all visitors to see the magnificent coastline where the towering Kiakoura Mountains meet the mighty Pacific Ocean.
See what the train drivers sees and experience the railroad tracks in a whole new way. Watch the scenery float by and hear what goes on in the train cabin. Filmed from the drivers cab, open air observation carriage and the lineside - Part 3 takes our train under New Zealand's Southern Alps emerging from the Otira Tunnel to follow the Otira River. We then head for the West Coast passing Lake Brunner at Moana, as the vegetation changes to lush temperate rain forest.
Man behind me you dont know
Likes it fast better than slow
Hates the lin drum
It's his foe
Drumming one man show
He's no P. I. T. grad
Rearranging songs makes him mad
Hey Darrin
throw that stick away
You break two or three
Every time you play
Stop the music
stop the show
Stop until I signal to go
Clacking always in the street
He's the master beat
Obsessed with aliens
He is my best friend
Hey Darrin
throw that stick away
You break two or three
Every time you play
Don't you worry
you'll be endorsed one day
Hey Darrin
throw that stick away
My friend Darrin has a girlfriend
She loves him so much
even loves his furry hand
He's a hockey fan the likes you'll never see
Likes it so much
hanky panky with Wayne Gretzky
Star Wars video game
he plays it like a pro
Looks like Chewwy but thinks he's Hans Solo
Hey Darrin
throw that stick away
You break two or three
Every time you play
Don't you worry
you'll be endorsed one day
Hey Darrin
throw that stick away

You break two or three
Every time you play
Don't you worry
