Simon O’Connor | ‘The Spaces of Public Exhibition’: UCD/National Library Colloquium

Simon O’Connor is Curator and co-founder of the Little Museum of Dublin, a people’s museum of social and cultural history whose principle focus is the development and encouragement of civic pride. A composer by training, he has had numerous careers across the arts and creative sectors, primarily in the worlds of publishing, typography, photography, branding and art direction. As curator of the Little Museum, he has programmed, developed and designed over 20 exhibitions in the last 4 years, as well as managing the museum’s permanent collection. He continues to work as a composer – his most recent song cycle, ‘Left Behind’, forms the centrepiece of the Irish State’s International Women’s Day centenary celebration this year, and will be performed with the RTE Concert Orchestra in the National Concert Hall this April. On 4 March 2016, the Project Team, Ulysses Centre for Irish Writing @ Newman House, hosted a one-day colloquium on the topic of ‘The Spaces of Public Exhibition’. Keynote speaker was Michael John Gorman (founding director of Science Gallery, TCD) and the panelists Kate Raisz (US based Media Producer and Director), Stephanie Stewart (Creative Director at RLMG, Massachusetts), Declan McGonagle (Curator and Writer), Lynda Mulvin (Head of UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy), Kirsten Drotner (Chair of Media Studies at the University of Southern Denmark) and Simon O’Connor (Curator at the Little Museum of Dublin). Funding for the event was provided by UCD Research, Impact and Innovation Strategic Initiative Fund and UCD College of Arts and Humanities Research Fund.
