Manukau Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in New Zealand by area. It is located to the southwest of the Auckland isthmus, and opens out into the Tasman Sea.
The harbour mouth is between the northern head ("Burnett Head" / "Ohaka Head") located at the southern end of the Waitakere Ranges and South Head at the end of the long Awhitu Peninsula reaching up from close to the mouth of the Waikato River. The mouth is only 1800 metres wide, but after a nine kilometre channel it opens up into a roughly square basin 20 kilometres in width. The harbour has a water surface area of 394 square kilometres. There is a tidal variation of up to 4 metres, a very substantial change, especially since the harbour, being silted up with almost 10 million years of sedimentation, is rather shallow itself.
Because of the large harbour area and narrow mouth between the Manukau Heads, tidal flow is rapid and a bar at the mouth makes navigating in or out of the harbour dangerous. New Zealand's most tragic shipwreck occurred on the bar in 1863 when HMS Orpheus ran aground in clear weather with a loss of 189 lives. For this reason, along with the harbour's shallowness, it is not Auckland's favoured port, and the facilities at Onehunga are not very large compared to the other Ports of Auckland facilities on the Waitemata Harbour along the northeast of the isthmus.
Manukau (/ˈmɑːnᵿˌkaʊ/) or Manukau Central is a suburb of south Auckland, New Zealand, centred on the Manukau City Centre business district. It is located 23 kilometres south of the Auckland CBD, west of the Southern Motorway, south of Papatoetoe and north of Manurewa. The industrial and commercial suburb of Wiri lies to the east and south.
The headquarters of Manukau City Council were in Manukau Central until the council was merged into Auckland Council in November 2010. Manukau Central should not be confused with the much larger Manukau City, which was the entire area administered by the city council.
The Manukau Central area was part of the largely rural area of Wiri in the early 20th century. Its transition from farmland was driven by Manukau City Council, which formed in 1965 and purchased land there in 1966 for the development of an administrative and commercial centre. The Manukau City Centre mall, now Westfield Manukau City, opened in October 1976, and the Manukau City Council administration building in 1977. Several government departments established offices in the late 1970s.
A harbor or harbour (see spelling differences), or haven, is a body of water where ships, boats and barges seek shelter from stormy weather, or are stored for future use. Harbors and ports are often confused with each other. A port is a facility for loading and unloading vessels; ports are often located in harbors.
Harbors can be natural or artificial. An artificial harbor can have deliberately constructed breakwaters, sea walls, or jettys, or they can be constructed by dredging, which requires maintenance by further periodic dredging. An example of an artificial harbor is Long Beach Harbor, California, which was an array of salt marshes and tidal flats too shallow for modern merchant ships before it was first dredged in the early 20th century.
In contrast, a natural harbor is surrounded on several sides by prominences of land. Examples of natural harbors include Sydney Harbour, Australia and San Francisco Bay, California.
Artificial harbors are frequently built for use as ports. The oldest artificial harbor known is the Ancient Egyptian site at Wadi al-Jarf, on the Red Sea coast, which is at least 4500 years old (ca. 2600-2550 BC, reign of King Khufu). The largest artificially created harbor is Jebel Ali in Dubai. Other large and busy artificial harbors include:
Today I decided to do something a little different from my usual fishing and today was the best fishing day ever. Target species was the New Zealand snapper. The gear I was using was a shimano bait runner 6000oc which worked great and a 7 foot triton rod. The rig I used was a strayline rig and black magic flasher rig. The last time I fished off the boat was in 2007 and I admit it was hard to balance on a rough sea plus I did feel dizzy from the experience. Oh and this wasn't my boat, it was my dad's friend boat Please like and subscribe to my channel for more fishing videos

I always wanted to visit the northern shore of the entrance to the Manukau Harbour on the West Coast of Auckland, New Zealand. Preferably by land rather than entering by sea. Wouls still lover to explore it by boat (prehaps a job for "Travelin' lite". Hard to believe that sailing ships used to tie up here to load kauri logs from the Waitakere Ranges. This Harbour's Bar has a fearsome reputation. Not much shipping uses the Manukau Harbour today with most using the Waitemata Harbour on Auckland's east Coast, but we did see a ship leave.
Two males were saved from drowning late this afternoon by three people that heard their yells for help after their boat capsized in the Manukau Harbour near the Hillsborough area. Nitin Chakravarthy and Ron Berking where two of the rescuers and describe how they went to the aid of the med in trouble. One was winched away by the Westpac helicopter and the other was helped to shore by the rescuers. Netting flounder in the shallows
It's been a while since I've fished from this spot and it was great to be out on the water again. Lately fishing has been super tough and it's been hard trying to catch some good fish. I was out on the Manukau Harbour in NZ trying to target some fish for the table with my own pulley rig I managed to make, but instead I got something else entirely..... honestly no matter where I go, I end up hooking on to those pesky rays.... Waikowhai Park, Auckland Waikowhai Park is a park full of bush walks, beaches and attractive scenery off Hillsborough Road. From the lookout, you can see across the Manukau Harbour to Mangere Mountain and Ambury Park Farm. Orua Bay
The most populous, and prosperous, region of New Zealand, Auckland stretches from the base of Northland, down through the North Auckland Peninsula, to the mouth of the Waikato River. The Hauraki Gulf lies on the east coast of the region and, to the west, the natural harbours of Kaipara and Manukau stretch out into the Tasman Sea -- a difficult inlet for the brave ships who try to navigate her. Comprised of four main cities: Auckland; Manukau; North Shore and Waitakere, the volcanic (but dormant!) Auckland region is home to 35% of New Zealand's entire population. Maori heritage is strong here, and the area is a living example of the country's ethnic diversity -- the heady mix of Pacific, Asian and European cultures is reflected in the endless variety of shops, restaurants, museums and fest...
Recorded January 26, 2007. The Auckland metropolitan area, in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and most populous urban area in the country with over 1.4 million residents. Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the few cities in the world to have harbours on two separate major bodies of water. The entire video is shot from the top of the Sky Tower in downtown Auckland. The Sky Tower is an observation and telecommunications...
