Spearfishing in Aucklands Hauraki Gulf - New Zealand. Join Aquatic Rehab TV as we showcase four common spearfishing locations in the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland, New Zealand. In this episode we hunt the elusive snapper, dodge sharks and land a big yellowtail kingfish.

The video is a how to slow jig in the Inner Hauraki Gulf in depths of 28 meters and less. Once you drop the jig make sure it hits the bottom and slowly wind in the jig at a slow pace. Once you feel it has hooked a fish, slowly raise the reel & rod together so it will set the hook securely and then place the rod & reel in a comfortable position to anticipate if the fish does a quick dash in any direction. when hauling try not to use the reel to haul in the fish but use the rod to lift and reel on the downwards action of the rod and repeat. If you have hooked a good sized fish then let the drag do its thing until it tires its self out. If its putting up a long fight then add little turns to the drag but no more than a third of its max drag weight. If you find you are at a third of max drag then angle the rod in the opposite direction of which the fish is running, this will either put more pain on the fish or have it swim awkward enough to tire its self even further. Be patient and work the fish to the surface at a medium pace just in case you just hooked a little area of skin or foul hooked a undersized fish. Gear used: Shimano Soft Plastics 4-8kg medium action rod (Bendy Tip) with a "Ocean Angler" 60g Diamond Micro Jig.

Check out the rare footage Captain Cam Allan filmed of a Great White Shark attacking the sea anchor of Wave Dancer Charters Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. The crew where fishing with Catch Freestyle Kabura lures when the shark appeared. The juvenile female was over 3 metres long, and continued to circle the boat for more than 90 minutes.

This is a delicious way to eat raw kingfish. While not a traditional way of preparing sashimi it is a very good way for first time raw fish eaters to have a go. The ingredients required are ginger, garlic, olive oil and soy sauce. I've included some tips on how to handle and cut the sashimi as well.

Heli-fishing at Great Barrier – this is certainly an experience for the bucket list. Amazing views and rich rock fishing action make it hard to beat. We came home with snapper and a kingfish that ate my carpenter stickbait. The drone footage came out really well of the rugged rock terrain too.

The Hauraki Gulf is a coastal feature of the North Island of New Zealand. It has a total area of 4000 km², and lies between the Auckland Region, the Hauraki Plains, the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island (which surround it in anticlockwise order). Most of the gulf is part of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.
Hauraki is Māori for North Wind.
The gulf is part of the Pacific Ocean, which it joins to the north and east. It is largely protected from the Pacific by Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island to the north, and by the 80-kilometre-long Coromandel Peninsula to the east. The gulf is thus well-protected against all but northern winds.
Three large channels join the gulf to the Pacific. Colville Channel lies between the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier, Cradock Channel lies between the two islands, and Jellicoe Channel lies between Little Barrier and the North Auckland Peninsula. To the north of Auckland several peninsulas jut into the gulf, notably the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. Tiritiri Matangi Island is near the end of this peninsula. Further north, Kawau Island nestles under the Tawharanui Peninsula.

RBC - How To Slow Jig in the Inner Hauraki Gulf (20.1.2016)
The video is a how to slow jig in the Inner Hauraki Gulf in depths of 28 meters and less. Once you drop the jig make sure it hits the bottom and slowly wind in the jig at a slow pace. Once you feel it has hooked a fish, slowly raise the reel & rod together so it will set the hook securely and then place the rod & reel in a comfortable position to anticipate if the fish does a quick dash in any direction. when hauling try not to use the reel to haul in the fish but use the rod to lift and reel on the downwards action of the rod and repeat. If you have hooked a good sized fish then let the drag do its thing until it tires its self out. If its putting up a long fight then add little turns to the drag but no more than a third of its max drag weight. If you find you are at a third of max drag t... -

The crew where fishing with Catch Freestyle Kabura lures when the shark appeared. The juvenile female was over 3 metres long, and continued to circle the boat for more than 90 minutes. -

The video is a how to slow jig in the Inner Hauraki Gulf in depths of 28 meters and less. Once you drop the jig make sure it hits the bottom and slowly wind in the jig at a slow pace. Once you feel it has hooked a fish, slowly raise the reel & rod together so it will set the hook securely and then place the rod & reel in a comfortable position to anticipate if the fish does a quick dash in any direction. when hauling try not to use the reel to haul in the fish but use the rod to lift and reel on the downwards action of the rod and repeat. If you have hooked a good sized fish then let the drag do its thing until it tires its self out. If its putting up a long fight then add little turns to the drag but no more than a third of its max drag weight. If you find you are at a third of max drag then angle the rod in the opposite direction of which the fish is running, this will either put more pain on the fish or have it swim awkward enough to tire its self even further. Be patient and work the fish to the surface at a medium pace just in case you just hooked a little area of skin or foul hooked a undersized fish. Gear used: Shimano Soft Plastics 4-8kg medium action rod (Bendy Tip) with a "Ocean Angler" 60g Diamond Micro Jig.

This is a delicious way to eat raw kingfish. While not a traditional way of preparing sashimi it is a very good way for first time raw fish eaters to have a go. The ingredients required are ginger, garlic, olive oil and soy sauce. I've included some tips on how to handle and cut the sashimi as well.

How to prepare kingfish sashimi with garlic, ginger and soy
This is a delicious way to eat raw kingfish. While not a traditional way of preparing sashimi it is a very good way for first time raw fish eaters to have a go. The ingredients required are ginger, garlic, olive oil and soy sauce. I've included some tips on how to handle and cut the sashimi as well.
