Waitematā Harbour is the main access by sea to Auckland, New Zealand. For this reason it is often referred to as Auckland Harbour and is crossed by the Auckland Harbour Bridge, despite the fact that it is one of two harbours surrounding the city. The Waitematā forms the north and east coasts of the Auckland isthmus. It is matched on the south by the shallower waters of Manukau Harbour.
With a size of 70 square miles, it connects the city's main port and the Auckland waterfront to the Hauraki Gulf, and the Pacific Ocean. It is sheltered from Pacific storms by Auckland's North Shore, Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island.
The name is from the Māori language, with Wai te Mataa referring to obsidian glass. The 'sparkling waters' (a later translation of the meaning) of the harbour were said to glint like the volcanic glass prized by these early arrivals to the harbour.
The harbour is an arm of the Hauraki Gulf, extending west for eighteen kilometres from the end of the Rangitoto Channel. Its entrance is between North Head and Bastion Point in the south. The westernmost ends of the harbour extend past Whenuapai in the northwest, and to Te Atatu in the west, as well as forming the estuarial arm known as the Whau River in the southwest.
Auckland (/ˈɔːklənd/ AWK-lənd), in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and most populous urban area in the country. Auckland has a population of 1,454,300, 32 percent of New Zealand's population. It is part of the wider Auckland Region, which includes the rural areas and towns north and south of the urban area, plus the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, resulting in a total population of 1,570,500 that is governed by the Auckland Council. Auckland also has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. In Māori, Auckland's name is Tāmaki Makaurau and the transliterated version of Auckland is Ākarana.
The Auckland urban area (as defined by Statistics New Zealand) ranges to Waiwera in the north, Kumeu in the northwest, and Runciman in the south. It is not contiguous; the section from Waiwera to Whangaparaoa Peninsula is separate from its nearest neighbouring suburb of Long Bay. Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the few cities in the world to have two harbours on two separate major bodies of water.

This is a video of the Fullers Auckland Harbour Cruise. This is an enjoyable cruise around the Waitamata Harbour aboard a Fullers vessel, usually the Adventurer or Wanderer. It is a great way to see the harbour and explore Rangitoto Island on the ten minute stopover. Nature at its best - we were incredibly lucky to have pod of orca whales swim up close to the museum recently, in and around #Auckland Harbour. Hundreds of onlookers gathered along the wharf to see them (including calves) frolic in the Waitemata. They stayed for around half an hour before disappearing as quickly as they arrived. Apologies for the sound quality, we couldn't contain our excitement.
Auckland gets it's harbour bridge to unite the North Shore with the rest of the city.
The sheer logistics of building a bridge across the Waitemata Harbour, the largest project of its time in New Zealand, were always going to be daunting. The excavation required - both underwater for the piers and on land for the approaches - meant that 13,000cu m of earth, mud and spoil had to be shifted. Around 180 skilled workmen were brought out from England in 1955 to supplement the local workforce, still recovering from World War II losses. The bridge's workforce eventually reached 1000 men, on a job that took four years to complete. More than 17,000cu m of concrete was poured, and 12,540cu m of road surfacing material found. More than 7000 tonnes of steel were needed for the box girders and superstructure. Deciding on the colour of the bridge was a marathon effort. After 20 month...
