Quotes:
Mousy Julie: Should I tell you what I know? I was going to, but now maybe I've changed my mind...::Katie Burke: What are you talking about?::Mousy Julie: Harrison Hobart is missing... That's two, isn't it?
Samantha Harper: You're thinking about the cop, aren't you?::Katie Burke: Maybe.::Samantha Harper: Okay, visualize this with me. You're down in New York consulting with Lou Gerstner or the head of GE telling them how to buy South American countries but on the weekends, you fly back up here to hang out with the cop, do cop things, maybe go to cop mixers...::Katie Burke: I like the cop.::Samantha Harper: Yeah, um, I can see that.
Embry Larkin: You have no grace.
Samantha Harper: Please, I'll have a double order of escape fantasy and a side order of running away.
Embry Larkin: [walking into the play audition] Okay, stop, stop! That was... appalling. Sopranos, this piece was written by monks who believed in God. They're singing not to other monks, but to God. They're singing to God about God. And you think I'm a tough audience.
Embry Larkin: [looks through Katie's calendar book] You're a virgin. [grins] Nobody this organized ever had time for sex. [throws the book out of the window] Right, Katie from Rushville. If you have a voice, you sing. Nobody ever said "If you had a voice, take finance." [throws the finance book out as well]
Wade Handler: Did you think it was odd that, he still liked her a lot, and she hadn't really show him any real interest in over two years?::Mousy Julie: I thought it was the opposite of odd. Guys are drawn to her like bugs surround a bug lamp. For four years I've had the privilege of watching it.::Wade Handler: That bother you Julie?::Mousy Julie: Think you see the horns of jealousy? You got my angle? You might want to ask yourself why you're so interested in her. They think it's a cultish vulnerability... but it's just self obsession: The pea-brain says: "she needs saving", the pea-brain says: "I can save her". And then she doesn't notice them, so, they go crazy. It's about the missing dad and, validation. She just needs a friend.

Chance: You were so awesome. You were like Rin Tin Tin.::Shadow: What?::Chance: Rin Tin Tin. Don't you ever watch TV?
Chance: [catapults the mountain lion] Hasta la vista, Kitty!
Chance: Are we going in circles? That tree smells familiar.::Shadow: It's pine, Chance.
[At the vet, having porcupine quills removed]::Chance: Okay, okay, I'll talk! I left a gift on the carpet. I let Sassy take the rap for when I unrolled the toilet paper all over the house. I stole underwear on three occasions. [the vet yanks a quill out of his face] Okay, okay, four!
Fat Guy: Here, kitty kitty kitty kitty.::Sassy: "Here, kitty kitty kitty." Not on your life, chubby.::Fat Guy: Here, kitty kitty. Here, kitty. Here, kitty kitty kitty.::Sassy: No, dummy dummy dummy dummy.
Shadow: Chance, you're a genius!::Chance: No, I'm not! Uh, what's a genius?::Shadow: Never mind.
Shadow: You've learned all you need to know, Chance. Now all you need to learn is how to say goodbye.

Plot: It's a hot summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main business is its beaches. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn't sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy's mother puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. A local fisherman with much experience hunting sharks, Quint, offers to hunt down the creature for a hefty fee. Soon Quint, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature, they're going to need a bigger boat.

Quotes:
Quint: Hooper ya idiot. Starboard. Ain't you watchin' it?
Hooper: I'm not going to waste my time arguing with a man who's lining up to be a hot lunch.
Quint: Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.
Quint: This shark, swallow you whole.
Mayor Vaughn: Fellows, let's be reasonable, huh? This is not the time or the place to perform some kind of a half-assed autopsy on a fish... And I'm not going to stand here and see that thing cut open and see that little Kintner boy spill out all over the dock.
Mayor Vaughn: Martin, it's all psychological. You yell barracuda, everybody says, "Huh? What?" You yell shark, we've got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July.
Hooper: You were on the Indianapolis?::Brody: What happened?::Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know, you know that when you're in the water, chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. Well, we didn't know. 'Cause our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent, huh. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it's... kinda like 'ol squares in battle like uh, you see on a calendar, like the battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the shark goes to the nearest man and then he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, bosom's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. Well... he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He's a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper, anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.
Quint: [the Orca, their boat, is clearly sinking with water all over the deck, Quint hands Brody a small hand pump] Pump it out Chief!
Hooper: [Hooper attempts to wet his mask before Quint and Brody lower him in the shark cage] I got no spit.
Quint: [seeing Hooper's equipment] What are you? Some kind of half-assed astronaut?::[examining the shark cage]::Quint: Jesus H Christ, when I was a boy, every little squirt wanted to be a harpooner or a sword fisherman. What d'ya have there - a portable shower or a monkey cage?::Hooper: Anti-Shark cage.::Quint: Anti-shark cage. You go inside the cage?::[Hooper nods]::Quint: Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark.::[sings]::Quint: Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.
