On Avialogs : http://www.avialogs.com/index.php/aircraft/germany/junkers/ju87stuka/kaltstart-fur-ju-87b-winterbetrieb.html Almost 2 weeks ago remains of Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber has been discovered near Croatian Island of Žirje but information was publicly disclosed only yesterday... wreckage is in surprisingly good condition after all this years under the relatively warm waters of the Adriatic and it stands on its wheels down position on the seabed. It is estimated that it is possible to be fully restored which is planned in the future. There are only 2 of these existing aircrafts in museums in Chicago and London out of 5709 total built, 2 other wrecks from the Norway and Greek waters were found in much worse conditions. It was discovered by luck fallowing the information from local fisherman community, the dive was conducted by the members of Department of Underwater Archeology of The Croatian Restauration Society, diving club ZG-SUB and Ministry of Defence Military Museum. Engine from the plane has been ripped off from the impact with the sea and it lies close to the aircraft.... it is presumed that this is Italian Airforce R-2 variant of the famous dive-bomber shot down by Royal Yugoslav Army in April War of 1941. Literature says it is probably the Ju 87 R-2 aircraft from the 239. Squadriglia, 97 Gruppo Bombardamento a tuffo which on 12.04. 1941 with 2 more aircraft was involved in attack on Royal Yugoslav Navy hydroplane squadron anchored in the bay of Jadrtovac near the city of Šibenik.... two planes were hit, one plane was shot down and its crew was killed, second one was damaged and was forced to land on the sea where it layed until now.

In this War Thunder video tutorial, I fly the Tier-1 / Rank-1, German Ju-87 B-2 & R-2. The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. The design of the Ju 87 had begun in 1933. The first Ju 87 prototypes were built in Sweden and secretly brought to Germany in late 1934. Now I’m not going to go thru the prototype testing & evaluation process, but I will say that it was in competition with the Heinkel He-118 a rival design. The Ju 87 V1 was powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine, and incorporated a ( Twin Tail ) design much like that of the Bf-110. One of the prototypes crashed on January 24, 1936, killing Junkers' chief test pilot, and his engineer. That crash prompted a change to a single vertical stabiliser tail design, that we are familiar with. On July 27, 1936, the He 118 prototype crashed, and immediately after this incident, The Junkers Ju-87 Stuka was announced as the winner of the development contest. The Stuka first flew in 1935 and made its combat debut in 1936 as part of the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. The aircraft was easily recognizable by its inverted gull wings , it fixed undercarriage, & The terrifying sound of it’s "Jericho Trumpets". The Stuka's design included several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high acceleration. Although sturdy, accurate, and very effective against ground targets, the Ju 87, like many other dive bombers of the war, was vulnerable to modern fighter aircraft. Its flaws became apparent during the Battle of Britain; poor maneuverability and a lack of both speed and defensive armament meant that the Stuka required heavy fighter escort to operate effectively. The Stuka operated with further success after the Battle of Britain, and its precision ground-attack aircraft became valuable to German forces in the Balkans Campaign, the African and Mediterranean theaters and the early stages of the Eastern Front campaigns where Soviet fighter resistance was disorganized and in short supply. Once the Luftwaffe lost air superiority on all fronts, the Ju 87 once again became an easy target for enemy fighter aircraft. In spite of this, because there was no better replacement, the type continued to be produced until 1944, and was still in use until the last days of the war. An estimated 6,500 Ju 87s of all versions were built between 1936 and August 1944.
