On September 28~30, 2007, over eighty P-51 Mustangs and hundreds of WWII aviation Legends including Fighter Aces, Tuskegee Airmen and WASPs and thousands of spectators came together for the "Gathering of Mustangs and Legends" at Rickenbacker Airport in Columbus Ohio.
Many other aircraft attended this special one-time only event as well. You have to see and hear these planes in flight to appreciate the sights and deep harmonious sounds produced by 20 Rolls Royce Merlins powered Mustangs pass by!
In this segment, 20 Mustangs take off and form up to create a Giant "51" in the Saturday afternoon sky above Rickenbacker Airport. We normally go to the Reno Air Races, but this year headed to Ohio and I was glad we did.
This footage was shot using a tripod from a twelve foot high photographers platform. Mounted atop my brand new Sony V1u HD camera was a very sensitive directional microphone. The sound quality is simply the best! Enjoy!

The United States Military Aircraft Designation System was first designed in 1919 when the US Army's Aeronautical Division became the United States Army Air Service. Before this aircraft were put into service under their manufacturers' designations.
History
United States Army Air Service 1919 to 1924
During this period Type Designations used by the United States Army Air Service were allotted, using two or three letters, which were an abbreviation of the aircraft's purpose. Examples include GA for Ground Attack aircraft; NO for Night Observation aircraft and NBS for Night Bombardment, Short Distance aircraft.
Army aviation 1924 to 1962
From 1924 to 1947 the Air Service, United States Army Air Corps, United States Army Air Forces and United States Air Force used a designation system based on mission category, with each model in a category numbered sequentially. In 1947, the designation system was extensively overhauled, with several categories being dispensed with, and others renamed For instance, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star (Pursuit) was redesignated as F-80 (Fighter), while the A-26 medium bomber/attack aircraft was redesignated as the B-26, reusing the designation, the Martin B-26 having retired in the meantime.

The Horse was developed, made and built by N. American Air travel (NAA) in response to a requirements issued straight to NAA by the British Investing in Payment. The model NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the agreement was authorized and also, with an engine set up, initially flew on 26 October.
The Horse was originally created to utilize the Allison V-1710 engine, which had actually limited high-altitude efficiency. It was first flown operationally by the Royal Air Pressure (RAF) as a tactical-reconnaissance aircraft as well as fighter-bomber (Horse Mk I). The addition of the Rolls-Royce Merlin to the P-51B/ C model transformed the Horse's performance at elevations over 15,000 feet, matching or bettering that of the Luftwaffe's boxers.

On September 28~30, 2007, over eighty P-51 Mustangs and hundreds of WWII aviation Legends including Fighter Aces, Tuskegee Airmen and WASPs and thousands of spectators came together for the "Gathering of Mustangs and Legends" at Rickenbacker Airport in Columbus Ohio.
Many other aircraft attended this special one-time only event as well. You have to see and hear these planes in flight to appreciate the sights and deep harmonious sounds produced by 20 Rolls Royce Merlins powered Mustangs pass by!
In this segment, 20 Mustangs take off and form up to create a Giant "51" in the Saturday afternoon sky above Rickenbacker Airport. We normally go to the Reno Air Races, but this year headed to Ohio and I was glad we did.
This footage was shot using a tripod from a twelve foot high photographers platform. Mounted atop my brand new Sony V1u HD camera was a very sensitive directional microphone. The sound quality is simply the best! Enjoy!
