The most influential member of the Royal family is the King of Saudi Arabia, currently King Salman. The throne was designed to pass from one son of the first king, Ibn Saud, to another. His deputy Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is also from the ruling House of Saud, and the king-appointed cabinet includes more members of the royal family. While the monarchy is hereditary now, future Saudi kings will be chosen by a committee of Saudi princes, in line with a 2006 Royal Decree.[1]
The family is estimated to be composed of 15,000 members, but the majority of the power and wealth is possessed by a group of only about 2,000.[2][3]
The House of Saud has gone through three phases: the First Saudi State, the Second Saudi State, and the modern nation of Saudi Arabia. The First Saudi State marked the expansion of Wahhabism. The Al-Saud family had been in exile since 1893 following the disintegration of the Second Saudi State and the rise of Jebel Shammar under the Al Rashid clan. In 1902, Ibn Saud recaptured Riyadh, the Al Saud dynasty's former capital. He went on to subdue the rest of Nejd, Al-Hasa, Jebel Shammar, Asir, and Hejaz (location of the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina) between 1913 and 1926. The resultant polity was named the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz from 1927 until it was further consolidated with Al-Hasa and Qatif into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.
The Treaty of Darin, or the Darin Pact, of 1915 was between the United Kingdom and Abdul-Aziz Al Saud (Ibn Saud) ruler of Nejd, The Treaty made the lands of the House of Saud a British protectorate and attempted to define its boundaries. The British aim of the treaty was to guarantee the sovereignty of Kuwait, Qatar and the Trucial States. Abdul-Aziz agreed not to attack these British protectorates, but gave no undertaking that he would not attack the Sharif of Mecca.
The Treaty of Jeddah (1927), superseded the Treaty of Darin (1915) and was signed on May 20, 1927, between King Abdul Aziz and the United Kingdom. It recognized the sovereignty of King Abdul Aziz over what was then known as the Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd; these regions were unified into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. In return, King Abdul Aziz would hold back his forces from attacking and harassing neighbouring British Protectorates.

The House of Saud is the ruling royal family of Saudi Arabia. The family has thousands of members. It is composed of the descendants of Muhammad bin Saud and his brothers, though the ruling faction of the family is primarily led by the descendants of Abdulaziz Ibn Saud.
The most influential member of the Royal family is the King of Saudi Arabia, currently King Salman. The throne was designed to pass from one son of the first king, Ibn Saud, to another. The next in line, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nayef is also from the ruling House of Saud, and the king-appointed cabinet includes more members of the royal family. While the monarchy is hereditary now, future Saudi kings will be chosen by a committee of Saudi princes, in line with a 2006 Royal Decree.
The family is estimated to be composed of 15,000 members, but the majority of the power and wealth is possessed by a group of only about 2,000.
The House of Saud has gone through three phases: the First Saudi State (1744–1818), the Second Saudi State (1818–91), and the modern nation of Saudi Arabia (1916–present). The First Saudi State marked the expansion of Wahhabism. The Second Saudi State was marked with continuous infighting. Modern Saudi Arabia wields considerable influence in the Middle East. The family has had conflicts with the Ottoman Empire, the Sharif of Mecca, the Al Rashid family of Ha'il, and numerous Islamist groups both inside and outside Saudi Arabia.
The First Saudi State was founded in 1744. This period was marked by conquest of neighboring areas and by religious zeal. At its height, the First Saudi State included most of the territory of modern-day Saudi Arabia, and raids by Al Saud's allies and followers reached into Yemen, Oman, Syria, and Iraq. Islamic Scholars, particularly Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab and his descendants, are believed to have played a significant role in Saudi rule during this period. The Saudis and their allies referred to themselves during this period as the Muwahhidun or Ahl al-Tawhid ("the monotheists"). Later they were referred to as the Wahhabis, a group of particularly strict Sunni, named for its founder.
Leadership of the Al Saud during the time of their first state passed from father to son without incident. The first imam, Muhammad ibn Saud, was succeeded by his eldest son Abdulaziz in 1765. In 1802, Abdulaziz led ten thousand Wahhabi soldiers into an attack on the Shi'ite holy city of Karbala, in what is now southern Iraq and where Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad is buried. Led by Abdulaziz, the Wahhabi soldiers killed more than two thousand people, including women and children. The soldiers plundered the city, demolishing the massive golden dome above Hussein's tomb and loaded hundreds of camels with weapons, jewelry, coins and other valuable goods.
The attack on Karbala convinced the Ottomans and the Egyptians that the Saudis were a threat to regional peace. Abdulaziz was killed in 1803 by an assassin, believed by some to have been a Shi'ite seeking revenge over the sacking of Karbala the year before. Abdul-Aziz was in turn succeeded by his son, Saud, under whose rule the Saudi state reached its greatest extent. By the time Saud died in 1814, his son and successor Abdullah had to contend with an Ottoman-Egyptian invasion seeking to retake lost Ottoman territory. The mainly Egyptian force succeeded in defeating Abdullah's forces, taking over the Saudi capital of Diriyyah in 1818. Abdullah was taken prisoner and was soon beheaded by the Ottomans in Istanbul, putting an end to the First Saudi State. The Egyptians sent many members of the Al Saud clan and other members of the local nobility as prisoners to Egypt and Istanbul, and razed the Saudi capital Diriyyah.

Have we no morals? We know that the Saudis created the monster that is Islamic terrorism, allegedly spending some $100 billion on exporting fanatical Wahhabism to other Muslim nations around the world. We know about the public beheadings and floggings, and the treatment of women that amounts to gender apartheid. Yet Western governments persist in cosying up to the Saudi royal family, making an ally of one of the most reactionary regimes in the world, so that we can buy their oil and sell them our expensive weaponry. Enough: we should stop turning a blind eye and start treating Saudi Arabia with the condemnation it deserves.
That’s the liberal, reformist position. But others would maintain that even if we find many of its practices abhorrent, it is of vital interest to the West to stay in bed with the Saudi kingdom. After all, it is one of our most important allies amongst the Arab states, helping curb Iran’s ambitions for supremacy within the Middle East. It has also joined the coalition against the horrifyingly brutal Islamic State, sending warplanes to strike targets in Syria and training moderate Syrian rebels to fight the extremists. The Saudis have also donated $500 million to UN humanitarian efforts in Iraq. These are policies we should support. Hold your nose if you must, but the West should keep in with the House of Saud.

The House of Saud (Arabic: آل سعود Āl Saʻūd) is the ruling royal family of Saudi Arabia.
The head of the House of Saud is the King of Saudi Arabia who serves as Head of State and monarch of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The King holds almost absolute political power. The King appoints ministers to his cabinet who supervise their respective ministries in his name. The key ministries of Defence, the Interior, and Foreign Affairs are reserved for the Al Saud, as are most of the thirteen regional governorships. Most portfolios, however, such as Finance, Labor, Information, Planning, Petroleum Affairs and Industry, have traditionally been given to commoners, often with junior Al Saud members serving as their deputies. House of Saud family members also hold many of the Kingdom's critical military and governmental departmental posts. Ultimate power in the Kingdom has always rested upon the Al Saud, though support from the Ulema, the merchant community, and the population at large has been key to the maintenance of the royal family's political status quo.
Long term political and government appointments, such as those of King Abdullah, who was Commander of the National Guard from 1963 to 2010, former Crown Prince Sultan, who was Minister of Defence and Aviation from 1962 until his death in 2011, Prince Mutaib Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs from 1975 to 2009, former Crown Prince Nayef who was the Minister of Interior from 1975 to 2012, and the current King Salman, who was governor of the Riyadh Region from 1963 to 2011, have perpetuated the creation of fiefdoms where senior princes have, often, though not exclusively, co-mingled their personal wealth with that of their respective domains. They have often appointed their own sons to senior positions within their own fiefdom. Examples of these include Prince Mutaib bin Abdullah as assistant commander in the National Guard until 2010; Prince Khalid bin Sultan as assistant minister of defence until 2013; Prince Mansour bin Mutaib as assistant minister for Municipal and Rural Affairs until he replaced his father in 2009; and Prince Mohammed bin Nayef as assistant minister in the Interior Ministry. In cases, where portfolios have notably substantial budgets, appointments of younger, often full, brothers have been necessary, as deputies or vice ministers, ostensibly to share the wealth and the burdens of responsibility, of each fiefdom. Examples of these include Prince Abdul Rahman who was vice minister of defence and aviation under Prince Sultan; Prince Badr, deputy to King Abdullah in the National Guard; Prince Sattam, who was Deputy Riyadh Governor during King Salman's term; and Prince Ahmed, who held the deputy minister's portfolio under Prince Nayef's interior ministry.

Saudi Arabia is said to be the world's largest source of funds and promoter of Salafist jihadism, which forms the ideological basis of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS and others. Donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide, according to Hillary Clinton. According to a secret December 2009 paper signed by the US secretary of state, "Saudi Arabia remains a critical financial support base for al-Qaida, the Taliban, LeT and other terrorist groups."
Reports have surfaced that the Saudi government supported the Iraqi insurgency in the 2000s.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Saudi embassy in Tehran, Sunday, as protests over the execution of top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr continue.
The demonstrators shouted slogans such as "Death to Al-Saud," carried signs with the picture of al-Nimr on them and attached a street sign with the scholar's name on it to the building. Security measures around the embassy have been heightened, after crowds of protesters had set the building ablaze following the execution.
Sheikh Nimr, a leading Shia cleric, was amongst 47 people executed on Saturday at the hands of the Saudi government after being convicted for "terrorism" offenses. He was a vocal critic of Saudi Arabia, and was one of seven people accused of orchestrating anti-government protests that erupted in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province in 2011.

Is there an alliance forming between Israel and Saudi Arabia?
An emerging relationship was on display in June when Anwar Eshki, a retired Saudi major general, appeared on a panel with Dore Gold, now the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The pair addressed their common opposition to Iran, and Eshki, a close adviser to the Saudi royal family, outlined his plan for the Middle East, which includes peace with Israel.
While the two countries have never had official diplomatic relations, do Eshki’s secret overtures represent the start of a new anti-Iran alliance? And are Palestinians being thrown under the bus in the process?

Hassan Nasrallah: The war in Yemen announces the end of the Saudi dynasty
Interview with Hezbollah Secretary General, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah- Syrian information channel, Monday, April 6, 2015
In this excerpt, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah discusses the US-Saudi operation in Yemen, which to date has been a real military disaster. According to him, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a foolish enterprise, and now its very territorial integrity is threatened. He confidently predicts a resounding victory for the Houthis, and major repercussions for the Saudi ruling dynasty and the entire region, which will be in the best interests of the peoples.

President Obama arrived in Saudi Arabia meets new king Salman (Michelle Obama looks unimpressed refuses to wear hijab) and said in an interview that the U.S. needs to balance its concerns about Saudi human rights with "immediate concerns" such as counterterrorism and regional stability.
"Sometimes we have to balance our need to speak to them about human rights issues with immediate concerns that we have in terms of countering terrorism or dealing with regional stability," Obama told in an interview before his stopover in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
Obama cut short his visit to India to travel to Saudi Arabia after Salman's ascent last week to the throne, following the death of his half-brother King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. The visit underscores the importance of Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the region.
Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, described the visit as "an opportunity to both pay respects to the legacy of King Abdullah and also to touch base on some of the issues where we're working together with the Saudis to include the efforts against ISIL, the situation in the region, including Yemen, Iran nuclear negotiations and the broader U.S.-Saudi relationship."

Chinese President Xi Jinping and King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud attended a ceremony on Wednesday afternoonat the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center to remotely inaugurate the operation of the Yasref oil refinery, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and China's Sinopec.
It is China's largest investment project in Saudi Arabia.
A full-conversion refinery covering 5.2 million square meters in the industrial city of Yanbu on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, Yasref plays a fundamental role in the future of Yanbu industries, the companies said.
It is the first overseas refinery Sinopec has built. The two companies signed the agreement in early 2012 with a total investment of nearly 10 billion U.S. dollars. Aramco holds 62.5 percent of the stock while Sinopec holds 37.5 percent.
Xi said that the energy cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia has brought tangible benefits to both peoples.
The launch of the refinery, he said, conforms to not only the Saudi national development strategy, but also China's strategy of carrying out cooperation with countries in the regions outlined in the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, a vision Xi put forward in 2013 to boost interconnectivity and common development along the ancient land and maritime Silk Roads.
The two sides still have many more joint projects, which will boost business and energy cooperation and promote comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, Xi added.
After the opening ceremony, President Xi concluded his two-day state visit to Saudi Arabia. He then traveled to Egypt to continue his three-nation Middle East tour, which will also bring him to Iran.

Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a welcome ceremony held by Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh on Tuesday.
Xi is in Riyadh for a two-day state visit to Saudi Arabia. This is the first leg of his three-nation tour of the Middle East, which will also take him to Egypt and Iran.
Xi is scheduled to discuss with King Salman about lifting bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
This is the first state visit by a Chinese head of state to Saudi Arabia in seven years.
He will also meet chiefs of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Saudi Arabia is China's biggest global supplier of crude oil and its biggest trading partner in West Asia and Africa. In 2013, China became the biggest trading partner of Saudi Arabia for the first time.
Two-way trade reached 69.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, growing 230 times over that of 1990 when the two countries established diplomatic ties.
Saudi Arabia is the first Arab country Xi visits as the Chinese president, and this Middle East tour comes as China and Arab countries mark 60 years in diplomatic relations in 2016.

The history of Saudi Arabia, as a state, began with its foundation in 1933 by Abdulaziz Al Saud, although the human history of the region that is now Saudi Arabia extends as far as 20,000 years ago. The region has twice in world history had a global impact. The first was in the 7th century when it became the cradle of Islam. The second was from the mid-20th century when the discovery of vast oil deposits propelled it into a key economic and geo-political role. At other times, the region existed in relative obscurity and isolation, although from the 7th century the cities of Mecca and Medina had the highest spiritual significance for the Muslim world, Mecca being the destination for the Hajj annual pilgrimage.
For much of its history most of the region has been controlled by a patchwork of tribal rulers. The Al Saud (the Saudi royal family) were originally minor tribal rulers in Najd in central Arabia. From the mid-18th century, imbued with the religious zeal of the Wahabbi Islamic movement, they became aggressively expansionist. Over the following 150 years, the extent of the Al Saud territory fluctuated. However, between 1902 and 1927, the Al Saud leader, Abdulaziz, carried out a series of wars of conquest which resulted in his creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

The invasion of Iraq has fuelled anti-western sentiment in Saudi Arabia, strengthening grassroots’ support for terrorist organisations.
Allan Gerson has sued Saudi charities, banks and members of the royal family for two trillion dollars. He accuses them of financing the September 11 attacks and Bali bombing: “We have seen evidence of money that went from Saudi sources through various entities in Europe to support terrorist cells.” These allegations are strenuously denied by Crown Prince Abdullah, ruler of Saudi Arabia. However, there is a growing gulf between the governing elite and their subjects and many Saudis are angered by America’s unwavering support for Israel. “The more the Palestinians are oppressed and the more the Americans support Israel, the more popular bin Laden and his like becomes,” explains Saudi writer Sulayman Al-Hattlan. “Osama stood up for people who were quiet ... He told the States I'm not afraid of you,” admires one student. Her friend agrees: “If Bush makes us choose between our religion or hurting our people, we're going to choose our religion.” Images of the bombing of Baghdad can only galvanise support for Islamic fundamentalists prepared to bank-roll Al-Qaeda.

Princess Reema Bint Bandar Al-Saud, CEO of Saudi Arabian luxury retailer Alfa Intl, says "you cannot have half of your population not working," Over the past two years, Princess Reema has been making bold moves toward women's empowerment in Saudi Arabia.
Born in Riyadh, Princess Reema grew up in Washington, D.C., where her father, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, served as Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States. She returned home in 2008 to a country where women's public participation is limited. In response she founded Alf Khair, a corporate social responsibility initiative providing training and support to women in the workforce.
Through investments in training and corporate infrastructure Princess Reema is creating opportunities unimaginable just a few years ago. Whether it’s hiring women, providing day care, offering free employee transportation or letting employees make their own decision about whether to wear a veil, she is embarking on a paradigm shift for a population hungry for change.

Abstract
As part of our research devoted to the utilization of agro and food industrial wastes as a source of medicines and phytopharmaceuticals, recoveryand bioactivity evaluation of aphenolic-rich hydro-acetone extract from red onion (Allium cepa L.) peels (ACPE) will be reported. The NMR analyses of the isolated compounds identifiedknown flavonoids and phenolic acids in ACPE. Total phenol content and antioxidant capacity, estimatedby Folin-Ciocalteu and DPPH radical assays, were found to be 72.33±5.30 mg gallic acid equivalent (mg GAE)/g andIC50 13.8 g/mL (ref. rutin: 5.2 g/mL), respectively. On the basis of high phenolic and antioxidant capacity of ACPE, the evaluation of hepatorenal protective activity was thus carried out using CCl4–induced toxicity model in rats. Results of measurements of various serum and hepatorenal biochemical markers demonstrated that ACPEpossessa considerable protective potential against CCl4-induced liver and kidney injury at 100 mg/kg/rat. In another study, ACPE showed a concentration-dependent relaxation in isolated rabbit jejunum preparations of spontaneous and high K+-induced contractions equipotentially, nearly similar to that caused by papaverine; and suppressed the carbachol-induced bronchoconstriction in normotensive anesthetized rats similar to the effect observed with aminophylline. Theresults indicated that the spasmolytic and bronchodilatory effects ofACPEare partially mediated through inhibition of calcium channel andphosphodiesterase enzyme like-mechanisms. The above findings represented an evidence-based medicinal value to red onion peel, as a cheap dietary supplement where it may enhance the recovery from xenobiotics-induced toxicity initiated by free radicals and gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders, e.g. diarrhea and asthma.
