Lindy Morrison (The Go-Betweens): 'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs'
Lindy Morrison, formerly of The Go-Betweens, speaking with Australian journalist and author Andrew McMillen for his book 'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs', which was published in July 2014 by University of Queensland Press.
This clip was filmed at Lindy's home in Sydney, Australia in February 2013, immediately after our hour-long interview on the topic of drug use of all sorts – illicit, legal and prescription – which was then published as one of fourteen chapters in 'Talking Smack'.
Lindy Morrison: "I think it's important that there's an honest conversation about drugs, because there are so many layers of issues associated with that sort of conversation, and we only really began to unravel a few of them. It's important to keep on having all the discussions around the is...

Rob Snarski + Lindy Morrison - Sydney - January 20 2024
I’d been meaning to see Rob and Lindy again for quite some time. When this show with friends was announced, I knew it was what I’d been waiting for. For much of the show Rob Snarski and Linda Morrison were joined on stage by Ken Gormley and Barry Turnbull. Amanda Brown and Peter Milton Walsh also popped on for select numbers. Combinations varied throughout the two sets (19 songs) from Rob performing a solo to all six appearing for the encore. It certainly made for an interesting mix with plenty of variety. I recorded seven songs:
All God’s Creatures (00:23)
Shane O'Mara Wore Mascara (04:19)
Poor Florence Broadhurst (09:31)
Standing Next to David (13:48)
Sweet Edie (19:33)
Always, Always (24:07)
Dive For Your Memory (30:16)
Unfortunately, the wide shots are a little dark but that was inev...

'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs' by Andrew McMillen (UQP, 2014)
Of all the creative industries, the most distinct link between drug use and creativity lies within music. The two elements seem to be intertwined, inseparable; that mythical phrase “sex, drugs and rock and roll” has been bandied about with a wink and a grin for decades. But is it all smoke and mirrors, or does that cliché ring true for some of our best-known performers?
In this fascinating book, journalist Andrew McMillen talks with Australian musicians about their thoughts on – and experiences with – illicit, prescription and legal drugs. Through a series of in-depth and intimate interviews, he tells the stories of those who have bitten into the forbidden fruit and avoided choking.
This isn’t to say that stories of ruin and redemption are avoided – they’re not. These celebrated performers have walked the straight-and-narrow path of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and prescription medication, as well as the supposedly dark-and-crooked road of cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and methamphetamine.
By having conversations about something that’s rarely discussed in public, and much less often dealt with honestly, McMillen explores the truths and realities of a contentious topic that isn’t going away.
'Talking Smack' is a timely, thought-provoking must-read that takes you inside the highs and lows of some of our most successful and creative musicians, including Paul Kelly, Tina Arena, Gotye, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and Holly Throsby.

Unfortunately, the wide shots are a little dark but that was inevitable with Lindy wearing white under a bright spot. Thankfully, the close ups are brighter. With so much talent on stage it was always going to be a terrific night. Very pleased that I was there.
