Jay Black (born David Blatt; 2 November 1938) is an American singer, also known as "The Voice," whose height of fame came in the 1960s when he was the lead singer of the band Jay and the Americans. The band had numerous hits including "Cara Mia", "Come a Little Bit Closer", and "This Magic Moment".
Black was born in New York and grew up in Brooklyn in the neighborhood of Boro Park. In his later career, he has become known for touring New York State and Florida singing, mainly solo, and preceding his singing with a stand-up comedy routine. Jay and his brother speak Yiddish fluently.[citation needed]In 1966 he recorded a Yiddish song "Where Is My Village" about the holocaust
In 2006, Black completed bankruptcy proceedings in Manhattan, after he accrued a $500,000 debt in back taxes to the IRS as a result of his gambling addiction. The IRS initially sought to force him to sell the rights to perform as "Jay Black" as well as the trademark for "Jay and the Americans" in order to satisfy his debt to the IRS. Black did however win a partial victory in the case, which granted him the right to continue to use the name "Jay Black", but he was required to sell the rights to perform as "Jay and the Americans". The trademark to "Jay and the Americans" was purchased by former members of "Jay and the Americans". He can no longer perform as "Jay Black and the Americans" and now performs as "Jay Black and the Alley Cats".
Kenny Vance (born December 9, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY as Kenneth Rosenberg) is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer who was an original member of Jay and the Americans. His career spans from the 50s to today, with projects ranging from starting doo wop groups to music supervising to creating solo albums.
Vance grew up hanging around the famous Brill Building, the Tin Pan Alley song machine, and started his first vocal group, the Harbor Lites, at 15. The group recorded two singles for Ivy Records in 1959. He then formed another group and auditioned for Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller, who signed them to United Artists Records, and named the group Jay and the Americans.
Jay and the Americans released fifteen albums, and their first hit was “She Cried,” which was released in 1962. The group was the opening act for not only The Beatles' first US performance, but also for The Rolling Stones' first US performance. They also appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. They had many other hit singles in the 60s, and started their own publishing and production company, JATA Enterprises.
Jay and the Americans was a pop music group popular in the 1960s. Their initial lineup consisted of John "Jay" Traynor, Howard Kane (né Kirschenbaum), Kenny Vance (né Rosenberg) and Sandy Deanne (né Yaguda), though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black.
They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. In the manner of the time, Leiber and Stoller wanted to extend this to "Binky Jones and the Americans," but Traynor declined to be known as Binky Jones his whole career. He instead offered up "Jay," a family nickname, and it suited everyone.
With Jay Traynor singing lead, they first hit the Billboard charts in 1962 with the tune "She Cried," which reached #5 (later covered by The Shangri-Las, Aerosmith, and others). The next two singles didn't fare nearly as well, and Traynor left the group. Jay's solo singles made little impression, but one, "Up And Over" issued on ABC in 1966 since became Northern Soul classic. Empires' guitarist Marty Sanders (né Kupersmith)joined the group. He brought David Black (né Blatt) of "The Empires" in to take Traynor's place (after David first agreed to adopt the name Jay Black), and Black sang lead for the rest of the group's major hits.
Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969), better known by his stage name Jay-Z, is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and occasional actor. He is one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrepreneurs in America, having a net worth of over $450 million as of 2011.He has sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide, while receiving fourteen Grammy Awards for his musical work, and numerous additional nominations. Blender included the former on their 500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die.
Jay-Z co-owns the 40/40 Club, is part-owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets and is also the creator of the line Rocawear. He is the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings, one of the three founders of Roc-A-Fella Records, and the founder of Roc Nation. This magic moment
So different and so new
Was like any other
Until I met you
And then it happened
It took me by suprise
I knew that you felt it too
I could see it by the look in your eyes
Sweeter than wine
Softer than a summer's night
Everything I want, I have
Whenever I hold you tight
This magic moment,
While your lips are close to mine,
Will last forever,
Forever, 'til the end of time
So why won't you dance with me?
Why won't you dance with me?
This magic moment
So different and so new
Was like any other
Until I met you
And then it happened
It took me by suprise
I knew that you felt it too
I could see it by the look in your eyes
Sweeter than wine
Softer than a summer's night
Everything I want, I have
Loneliness is a cloak you wear
A deep shade of blue is always there
Emptiness is a place you're in
With nothing to lose but no more to win
The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without love....(baby)
Lonely
Without you, baby
Girl, I need you,
In a little café just the other side of the border
She was just sitting there givin' me looks that made my
mouth water
So I started walking her way
She belonged to that man, José
And I knew, yes I knew I should leave
When I heard her say, yeah
Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long
So we started to dance
In my arms, she felt so inviting
That I just couldn't resist
Just one little kiss so exciting
Then I heard the guitar player say
"Vamoose, José's on his way"
Then I knew, yes I knew I should run
But then I heard her say, yeah
Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long
------ instrumental break ------
Then the music stopped
When I looked the café was empty
Then I heard José say
"Man you know you're in trouble plenty"
So I dropped my drink from my hand
And through the window I ran
And as I rode away
I could hear her say to José, yeah
Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong
Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long
La la-la-la la-la
La la-la-la la-la
Ho ho la-la
Cara Mia why must we say goodbye?

You're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes off of you
you'd be like heaven to touch
oh, I want to hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
and I thank God I'm alive
you're just too good to be true
I can't take my eyes off of you
Oh, in the way that I stare
There's nothin' else to compare
the thought of you leaves me weak
there're no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel
oh, did let me know that it's real
you're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes off of you
I love you baby
and if it's quite all right
I need you baby
to warm a lonely night
I love you baby
trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
don't bring me down, I pray
oh, pretty baby
Now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby
let me love you
You're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes off of you
you'd be like heaven to touch
oh, I want to hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
and I thank God I'm alive
you're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes off of you
I love you baby
and if it's quite all right
I need you baby
to warm a lonely night
I love you baby
trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
don't bring me down, I pray
oh, pretty baby
Now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby
let me love you
I love you baby
and if it's quite all right
I need you baby
to warm a lonely night
I love you baby
trust in me when I say
Oh, pretty baby
don't bring me down, I pray
oh, pretty baby
Now that I found you, stay
Oh, pretty baby
trust in me when I say
I love you baby
