Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli खड्ग प्रसाद शर्मा ओली; born
22 February 1952) commonly known as
K. P. Oli, is a
Nepali politician and the
Prime Minister of Nepal since
11 October 2015. He is the first Prime Minister under the newly adopted
Constitution of Nepal.
Oli was elected as the chairman of
Communist Party of Nepal (
Unified Marxist-Leninist) in July 2014. Oli was elected as leader of the
CPN-UML Parliamentary
Party in the 2nd
Constituent Assembly on
4 February 2014, defeating party chairman
Jhala Nath Khanal by a vote of
98 to 75. His hometown is
Jhapa,
Nepal. He won the Jhapa–7 seat in the
2013 Constituent Assembly election as a CPN-UML candidate.
He was the
Home Minister in the Adhikari cabinet in
1994–
1995. He became the
Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Foreign Affairs during the interim government in
2006. He was elected as Prime Minister in a parliamentary vote in
October 2015, receiving 338 votes out of 597. Oli's PM candidacy was supported by UCPN-Maoists,
Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, and Madhesi Rights
Forum Democratic along with 13 other small parties.
Brief Political
History
Mr Oli at the age of just 14 years, started involving in the political activities since 1966 with the influence of Marxism-Leninism political philosophy.He was granted the
Member of Communist Party of Nepal in Feb-1970 and became
the member of area committee in
1970. After receiving Party membership he promptly started and involved in underground politics against autocratic partyless
Panchayat System in 1970. At the time he worked jointly with other Jhapali revolutionary including Ramnath Dahal, Netra Ghimire, Biren Singh Rajbansi,
Krishna Kuikel and
Narayan Shrestha who had got martyrdom at Sukhani jungle of Jhapa in 2029 BS. He was arrested for the first time in 1970. He became district committee member of party in
1971 and
Chief of the Jhapa
Movement Organizing Committee in
1972.
Again he got arrested and imprisoned and put in the various jails and toxic cells for 14 consecutive years from
1973 to
1987. He released from jail in 1987 and get held the position of
Central Committee Member of the
CPN (ML) in 1987. He worked as Party In-charge for
Lumbini Zone till
April 1990. He held the position of
Standing committee member and chief of foreign department of
CPN (UML) since
1992. He is the Founder president of the
National Democratic Youth Federation of Nepal(DNYF), a sister organization of the party in
1990. He was elected as
Member of the parliament in the
House of Representatives (
HOR) from
Jhapa district constituency no. 6 since
1991 and from Jhapa constituency no. 2 in
1999 as well. he also held the responsibility of Chief of the
Investigation Commission constituted by CPN (UML) to investigate into the Dasdhunga
Jeep Accident (May 16,
1993) for the inquiry on death of CPN (UML) the then
General Secretary Madan Kumar Bhandari and party's
Organization Department Chief Jeeb Raj Ashrit in May 1993. Mr Oli was the
Presidium member of Afro-Asian
Peoples'
Solidarity Organization Nepal in 1994 and president of
AAPSO since
2000. He had taken the responsibility of
Cabinet Ministers at different periods: His tenure as Home Minister was highly remarked for success during the premiership of
First Communist prime
Minister Mr
Manmohan Adhikari from 1994- 1995.
Political career
KP began his political career in 1966 and was influenced by Marxism-Leninism. He became a member of the Communist Party of Nepal in February 1970. He became involved in subversive politics in contradiction of the tyrannical party-less Panchayat System in that time. For his activities, he was arrested for the first time in 1970. A year later he became the
District committee member of party and soon the Chief of the Jhapa Movement Organizing Committee in 1972. For his movement, Oli was arrested and imprisoned for 14 consecutive years from 1973 to 1987. After being released in 1987, he became a
Central committee member of
UML as an in-charge for Lumbini Zone until 1990. He then went on to hold the post of chief of foreign department of CPN (UML) in 1992. Oli became the Founder president of the National Democratic Youth Federation of Nepal(DNYF).
