Trekkies alert! Save the date. Mark your calendars. Count the days. You will be able to join Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise and boldly go where you/they have never gone before when "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" arrives for the first time ever on Blu-ray. The date to remember: June 7. The people to thank: Paramount Home Media Distribution. Fans often consider the flick as one of the greatest films (if not the greatest) the franchise ever turned out.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the "Star Trek" franchise, this classic film has been digitally remastered in high definition with brilliant picture quality and will be presented in both Nicholas Meyer’s Director’s Edition and the original theatrical version. The Blu-ray also includes a brand-new, nearly 30-minute documentary entitled “The Genesis Effect: Engineering The Wrath of Khan,” which details the development and production of this fan-favorite film through archival footage, photos and new interviews.
In addition to the new documentary, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" Director's Edition Blu-ray is bursting with more than two hours of previously released special features including multiple commentaries, original interviews with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Ricardo Montalban and DeForest Kelley, explorations of the visual effects and musical score, a tribute to Ricardo Montalban, storyboards and much more.
Trekkies can visual every scene and recite the dialogue, but in a nutshell: Captain Kirk’s Starfleet career enters a new chapter as a result of his most vengeful nemesis: Khan Noonien Singh, the genetically enhanced conqueror from late 20th century Earth. Escaping his forgotten prison, Khan sets his sights on both capturing Project Genesis, a device of god-like power, and the utter destruction of Kirk.
We'll leave you with a good question and a better answer. Robert Sallin, the producer of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", recalls casting Ricardo Montalban as Khan. "It was a major stroke of good luck. He was a consummate gentleman, consummate professional, and one of the nicest people I've ever run into. Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are top-of-the-line professional actors, they are so talented. But they had been playing their roles for so long, there was a bit of nonchalance as they approached shooting. They knew what they were doing, but there was kind of a casual atmosphere, which is fine. Then, Ricardo arrives on the set and the first thing he does is a 10-minute master shot without a break. And it was perfect! Boy, the next day, suddenly Bill and Leonard are there promptly, and they've got their lines learned. It's not that Ricardo was a better actor, it's that his whole attitude was so professional, so suddenly the boys had to ratchet it up. He was in amazing shape. His pectoral muscles and his whole upper body were very strong and they emphasized that with the costume. That was real Ricardo."
