Around the time Savannah Fulkerson turned 4, she became unable to spend any length of time outdoors. “We’d be outside about 20 minutes or so … she’d say, ‘I burn!’” recalled Savannah’s mother Andrea Fulkerson. Fulkerson remembers Savannah in so much pain she had “uncontrollable screaming like she got hit by a car.”

In which John Green teaches you about the massive immigration to the United States during the late 19th and early 20th century. Immigrants flocked to the US from all over the world in this time period. Millions of Europeans moved to the US where they drove the growth of cities and manned the rapid industrialization that was taking place. In the western US many, many Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the railroad and in mines. As is often the case in the United States, the people who already lived in the US reacted kind of badly to this flood of immigrants. Some legislators tried to stem the flow of new arrivals, with mixed success. Grover Cleveland vetoed a general ban on immigration, but the leadership at the time did manage to get together to pass and anti-Chinese immigration law. Immigrants did win some important Supreme Court decisions upholding their rights, but in many ways, immigrants were treated as second class citizens. At the same time, the country was rapidly urbanizing. Cities were growing rapidly and industrial technology was developing new wonders all the time. John will cover all this upheaval and change, and hearken back to a time when racial profiling did in fact boil down to analyzing the side of someone's face.

Langston Hughes was a poet and playwright in the first half of the 20th century, and he was involved in the Harlem Renaissance, which was a cultural movement among African Americans of the time that produced all kinds of great works in literature, poetry, painting, sculpture, music, and other areas. The Harlem Renaissance mainly happened in Harlem, the traditionally black neighborhood in upper Manhattan in New York City. Langston Hughes was primarily known as a poet, but he was involved deeply in the movement itself as well. John will teach you a bit about Hughes's background, and he'll examine a few of his best known poems.

The film mainly follows the famous 1597 Battle of Myeongryang during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598), where the iconic Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin managed to destroy a total of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 ships remaining in his command. The battle, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, is considered one of the greatest victories of Yi.

In celebration of International Tourist Guide Day, the members of the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC, www.ganyc.org) sponsored a FREE event on Sun Feb 21st, 12-5pm at The New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West at W 77th St, 2nd Floor Library.
Started in 1990, International Tourist Guide Day is an annual event that introduces Tourist Guides to the local population, as well as media and tourism industry partners, with the goal of raising awareness about what Tourist Guides do as a profession, and their benefit to the local economy.
Tourism is one of NYC’s biggest industries, with nearly 60 million people (international and domestic) visiting in the past year, spending up to $41 billion dollars. The economic benefit of tourism helps to support the myriad of thriving local independent businesses and manufacturers.
As global peace ambassadors, GANYC members created this fun-filled event to engage both New Yorkers and visitors alike, with a series of presentations and talks, and provided the opportunity to meet and mingle with professional NYC tour guides! There was fun, NYC Trivia, a Raffle for chances to win various walking tours offered by GANYC guides, and a few surprises!
GANYC Multilingual Guides Chair, Ibrahima Diallo, presented a talk on “International Tourism.” Ibrahima is a Senegalese native, who has seen the city as a Tourist, Immigrant, New Yorker, Licensed Guide and Photographer. Founder of All New York Fun Tours and NYC Passion, Ibrahima has been working nearly a decade as a licensed guide.
NYC Tour Guides, Art & Susan Zuckerman offered an hour-long slideshow presentation, “Women of New York,” highlighting some NYC’s greatest women and the historic locations associated with them -- along with a few of Art’s anecdotal quips! Art & Susan Zuckerman are Radio Talk Show Hosts on the “Z” Travel & Leisure hour on WVOX 1460 AM.
An informational presentation from The New-York Historical Society and The Guides Association of New York City will round out the day, culminating with a 4:00 PM Highlights Tour of the New‐York Historical Society's collections.
Founded in 1974, The Guides Association of New York City is one of the oldest and most active tour‐guide associations in America. GANYC is a comprised of hundreds of professional licensed NYC tour guides, who represent a diverse cross section of ethnicities and tour specialties. York (
i/ˈjɔːrk/) is a historic walled city at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England, and is the traditional county town of Yorkshire to which it gives its name. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events in England throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural and sporting activities making it a popular tourist destination for millions.
The city was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD. It became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and later of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jórvík. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained.
In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.

Immigrants flocked to the US from all over the world in this time period. Millions of Europeans moved to the US where they drove the growth of cities and manned the rapid industrialization that was taking place. In the western US many, many Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the railroad and in mines. As is often the case in the United States, the people who already lived in the US reacted kind of badly to this flood of immigrants. Some legislators tried to stem the flow of new arrivals, with mixed success. Grover Cleveland vetoed a general ban on immigration, but the leadership at the time did manage to get together to pass and anti-Chinese immigration law. Immigrants did win some important Supreme Court decisions upholding their rights, but in many ways, immigrants were treated as second class citizens. At the same time, the country was rapidly urbanizing. Cities were growing rapidly and industrial technology was developing new wonders all the time. John will cover all this upheaval and change, and hearken back to a time when racial profiling did in fact boil down to analyzing the side of someone's face. Started in 1990, International Tourist Guide Day is an annual event that introduces Tourist Guides to the local population, as well as media and tourism industry partners, with the goal of raising awareness about what Tourist Guides do as a profession, and their benefit to the local economy. Tourism is one of NYC’s biggest industries, with nearly 60 million people (international and domestic) visiting in the past year, spending up to $41 billion dollars. The economic benefit of tourism helps to support the myriad of thriving local independent businesses and manufacturers. As global peace ambassadors, GANYC members created this fun-filled event to engage both New Yorkers and visitors alike, with a series of presentations and talks, and provided the opportunity to meet and mingle with professional NYC tour guides! Millions of Europeans moved to the US where they drove the growth of cities and manned the rapid industrialization that was taking place. In the western US many, many Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the railroad and in mines. Millions of Europeans moved to the US where they drove the growth of cities and manned the rapid industrialization that was taking place. In the western US many, many Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the railroad and in mines. As is often the case in the United States, the people who already lived in the US reacted kind of badly to this flood of immigrants. Some legislators tried to stem the flow of new arrivals, with mixed success. Grover Cleveland vetoed a general ban on immigration, but the leadership at the time did manage to get together to pass and anti-Chinese immigration law. Immigrants did win some important Supreme Court decisions upholding their rights, but in many ways, immigrants were treated as second class citizens. At the same time, the country was rapidly urbanizing. Cities were growing rapidly and industrial technology was developing new wonders all the time. John will cover all this upheaval and change, and hearken back to a time when racial profiling did in fact boil down to analyzing the side of someone's face.

Started in 1990, International Tourist Guide Day is an annual event that introduces Tourist Guides to the local population, as well as media and tourism industry partners, with the goal of raising awareness about what Tourist Guides do as a profession, and their benefit to the local economy.
Tourism is one of NYC’s biggest industries, with nearly 60 million people (international and domestic) visiting in the past year, spending up to $41 billion dollars. The economic benefit of tourism helps to support the myriad of thriving local independent businesses and manufacturers.
As global peace ambassadors, GANYC members created this fun-filled event to engage both New Yorkers and visitors alike, with a series of presentations and talks, and provided the opportunity to meet and mingle with professional NYC tour guides! There was fun, NYC Trivia, a Raffle for chances to win various walking tours offered by GANYC guides, and a few surprises!
GANYC Multilingual Guides Chair, Ibrahima Diallo, presented a talk on “International Tourism.” Ibrahima is a Senegalese native, who has seen the city as a Tourist, Immigrant, New Yorker, Licensed Guide and Photographer. Founder of All New York Fun Tours and NYC Passion, Ibrahima has been working nearly a decade as a licensed guide.
NYC Tour Guides, Art & Susan Zuckerman offered an hour-long slideshow presentation, “Women of New York,” highlighting some NYC’s greatest women and the historic locations associated with them -- along with a few of Art’s anecdotal quips! Art & Susan Zuckerman are Radio Talk Show Hosts on the “Z” Travel & Leisure hour on WVOX 1460 AM.
An informational presentation from The New-York Historical Society and The Guides Association of New York City will round out the day, culminating with a 4:00 PM Highlights Tour of the New‐York Historical Society's collections.
Founded in 1974, The Guides Association of New York City is one of the oldest and most active tour‐guide associations in America. GANYC is a comprised of hundreds of professional licensed NYC tour guides, who represent a diverse cross section of ethnicities and tour specialties. New York City Travel Guide
Here are some Things to do in NYC :) This 1st of a "Things to do in NYC" is the BASICS. I will do more in depth videos on neighborhoods like Harlem, Brooklyn, Lower East Side which will include shopping, entertainment, eating, all that :) But for now I hope you find this helpful and excited about exploring NYC. Need to get around? Rent a bike! I have yet to try this but it seems fabulous! Save your feet and cover more ground. These bikes and bike spots are all over the city. A perfect way to burn calories and see more of the city faster.

Summer in NYC isn't really summer until you get your butt on a rooftop. My pick was Jimmy Rooftop. Sunday's after 3pm are bomb! Amazing music courtesy of DJ Cato. I believe it is doorman discretion, which means, dress your best and don't travel with a bunch of dudes. You get an amazing view of the sun setting over the Hudson River and you get to splash around in the pool if you so choose. I chose this spot because I used to work here and loved it!

Yes! Go to Church! After you party it up Saturday night or Sunday afternoon bring your sinful behind to this awesome church! You don't have to be religious to attend. This is a non-denominal church and people from all over the world come here for the amazing sermons and not to mention the interior. This Church is a converted theatre and a must see. Now go and pray!

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Manhattan Island is the city’s most well known district and the Rockefeller Center in Midtown is often referred to as the heart of the New York. Nearby the Roman Catholic Saint Patrick´s Cathedral is the largest and most magnificent church in the United States. The Grand Central Terminal divides Park Avenue and is a huge station with which the railroad kings, the Venderbilts, left an indelible mark. The huge hall, with its magnificent vaulted ceiling in Beaux Arts style, has been the city’s central railway station for twelve lines since 1913. The confines of Chinatown are inhabited by a hundred and fifty thousand Chinese from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, most of whom are unable to speak a word of English. Chinese characters wherever one looks and restaurants and Asian stores on every street corner. The famous Wall Street was named after a wall which in the early days protected the growing city against attack by Native American Indians. However, the roots of its subsequent claim to fame were laid in 1792. The young state desperately needed investment and therefore the powers that be decided to issue bonds. Close by, on a small island, is New York’s most famous landmark, the Statue Of Liberty. The head of Lady Liberty leads to the crown from which there are stunning views from several windows. New York City is most certainly unique. A city that’s very much alive and kicking, self-confident and always a surprise!

New York City in the Late 70's Reeling from a decade of social turmoil, New York in the 1970s fell into a deep tailspin provoked by the flight of the middle class to the suburbs and a nationwide economic recession that hit New York’s industrial sector especially hard. Michael Larson, a New Jersey Transit employee who was at the station at the time of the crash, crawled on all fours to pull people out of a train car.
Another witness who was on the train, Amy Krulewitz, said that as soon as the accident occurred, people in her car were immediately checking on one another.
Facebook quickly instituted a safety check to help those involved let their friends and family members know they were O.K.

On a recent rainy morning I walked out of a Dunkin’ Donuts on Eighth Avenue and realized that with my coffee in one hand, I couldn’t quite manage to open the umbrella I was holding in the other.
I looked around for a ledge on which I could place my coffee, to no avail. Then I noticed a woman leaving the same Dunkin’ Donuts, with the same dilemma and the same puzzled look on her face.
I approached her, smiled and, without saying anything, reached out for her coffee. I held it while she opened her umbrella, then she did the same for me. “Teamwork!” she exclaimed. “Have a great day!”

David Mindich (born 1963 in New York City) is a press critic, media historian, and professor at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont where he served as the chair of the journalism and mass communication department from 2000 to 2006. In the mid-1980s, he worked as an assignment editor for CNN. In 1996, Mindich earned a doctorate in American Studies from New York University where he worked under Mitchell Stephens, Carl Prince, and Jay Rosen.
The author of two widely reviewed books, Just the Facts and Tuned Out, Mindich has also written articles that have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, the Wilson Quarterly, the Baltimore Sun and academic journals. Mindich is particularly interested in the history, construction and present health of journalism. In 2006 Mindich wrote a resolution for the AEJMC) that censured the Bush administration for its "anti-press" policies. The resolution passed at the association's national convention in San Francisco with little opposition.
In Just the Facts, Mindich argued that journalist objectivity evolved in stages over a broad period, from the 1830s to the 1890s. Looking at five separate "elements" of objectivity—detachment, nonpartisanship, inverted pyramid writing, facticity, and balance—Mindich pinpointed specific historical moments when newswriting advanced toward its present form. One notable chapter is chapter three, which revealed that it was the government, and not journalists, who were using the inverted pyramid during the American Civil War. Another is chapter five, which is about the practice of lynching. Here Mindich argues that despite its claim of balance, the New York Times couldn't get the lynching story right because of the cultural (and racist) baggage its reporters and sources were bringing to the table.
In Tuned Out, Mindich argues that America is facing a grave threat to its democracy because the public has increasingly "tuned out" from politics and civic discouse. Mindich suggests a number of solutions to rectify the problem, including changing expectations for college-bound high school seniors.
Since the publication of Tuned Out, Mindich has given lectures at universities, high schools, media organizations and civics groups about media and democracy.
Mindich founded Jhistory, an Internet group for journalism historians, in 1994. He is currently an editor of the list.

David Mindich (born 1963 in New York City) is a press critic, media historian, and professor at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont where he served as the chair of the journalism and mass communication department from 2000 to 2006. He was named Vermont Professor of the year in 2006 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
He currently teaches Editing and Design for online media, and is the faculty adviser for St. Michael's online student publication, the Echo.
In the mid-1980s, he worked as an assignment editor for CNN. In 1996, Mindich earned a doctorate in American Studies from New York University where he worked under Mitchell Stephens, Carl Prince, and Jay Rosen.
The author of two widely reviewed books, Just the Facts and Tuned Out, Mindich has also written articles that have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, the Wilson Quarterly, the Baltimore Sun and academic journals. Mindich is particularly interested in the history, construction and present health of journalism. In 2006 Mindich wrote a resolution for the AEJMC) that censured the Bush administration for its "anti-press" policies. The resolution passed at the association's national convention in San Francisco with little opposition.
In Just the Facts, Mindich argued that journalist objectivity evolved in stages over a broad period, from the 1830s to the 1890s. Looking at five separate "elements" of objectivity—detachment, nonpartisanship, inverted pyramid writing, facticity, and balance—Mindich pinpointed specific historical moments when newswriting advanced toward its present form. One notable chapter is chapter three, which revealed that it was the government, and not journalists, who were using the inverted pyramid during the American Civil War. Another is chapter five, which is about the practice of lynching. Here Mindich argues that despite its claim of balance, the New York Times couldn't get the lynching story right because of the cultural (and racist) baggage its reporters and sources were bringing to the table.
In Tuned Out, Mindich argues that America is facing a grave threat to its democracy because the public has increasingly "tuned out" from politics and civic discouse. Mindich suggests a number of solutions to rectify the problem, including changing expectations for college-bound high school seniors.
Since the publication of Tuned Out, Mindich has given lectures at universities, high schools, media organizations and civics groups about media and democracy.
Mindich founded Jhistory, an Internet group for journalism historians, in 1994. He is currently an editor of the list.

However, he became enamored with economics and decided to transfer from Rice to the University of Texas at Austin for its economics program, finishing with his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 1942. That same year he enlisted in the Air Force and later began teaching economics at both SMU and the University of Dallas. Barnett and his wife, Mira, were married by Rabbi Lefkowitz at Temple Emanu-El in 1947. In 1949, he started studying at the University of Wisconsin to obtain his Ph.D. in economics while simultaneously teaching. Barnett finished law school in 1957 and became a practicing lawyer shortly thereafter.
