Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (sometimes just called “Bowie 1973”) follows David Bowie and his backing group The Spiders from Mars through their performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973. On that day, Bowie made the sudden surprise announcement that he was abandoning his Ziggy Stardust persona, and the show would be "the last show we'll ever do.” Considered by many to be the greatest music documentary of all time, D.A. Pennebaker’s film is a fitting tribute to the man and the legend, whose life and death affected millions of adoring fans.

UNLOCKING THE CAGE is a documentary that follows animal rights lawyer Steven Wise in his battle against an ineffective animal welfare system in an attempt to transform animal rights into legal protections. Legendary filmmakers D.A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus discuss Steven Wise, the rights of Chimpanzees and the three main subjects of their films. Pennebaker and Hegedus also discuss the impact Robert Redford, documentary films and Sundance have had on the film industry in this Sundance edition of BYOD hosted by Ondi Timoner.

Renowned filmmakers D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus follow determined animal rights activist Steven Wise into the courtroom for an unprecedented battle that seeks to utilize the writ of habeas corpus to expand legal “personhood” to include certain animals. Wise’s unusual plaintiffs—chimpanzees Tommy and Kiko, once famed showbiz stars—are now living in filth, struggling to survive. Wise and his impassioned legal team take us into the field, revealing gripping evidence of such abuse and plunging us into the intricacies of their case as they probe preconceived notions of what it means to be a non-human animal.
D A Pennebaker is regarded as one of the pioneers of cinéma vérité filmmaking. In 1959 he joined Drew Associated, where he produced the revolutionary Living Camera series and develop one of the first fully portable 16mm synchronized camera/soundrigs. His classics, Don't Look Back and Monterey Pop, defined the rock-film genre. Pennebaker is the recipient of an Academy Honorary Award.
Chris Hegedus has been directing, shooting, and editing films for four decades. In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious DGA Award for Startup.com. Along with D A Pennebaker, she directed the 1992 Academy Award–nominated film The War Room. Her other films include two-time Emmy Award–winning film Elaine Stritch at Liberty, The Energy War, Town Bloody Hall, Moon Over Broadway, Depeche Mode 101, and Kings of Pastry.

We had fun making the main menu for our new release of D. A. Pennebaker's groundbreaking documentary DONT LOOK BACK. This video, a two-minute loop composed of rare footage from the film, is structured around an outtake of Bob Dylan performing his song “She Belongs to Me,” with cutaways to some extraordinary material captured by Pennebaker’s camera—which at one point even lands in the hands of Dylan, whose footage of Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky’s swinging dance moves is priceless.

Donn Alan Pennebaker (born July 15, 1925) is an American documentary filmmaker and one of the pioneers of Direct Cinema/Cinéma vérité. Performing arts and politics are his primary subjects.
Pennebaker (known as "Penny" to his friends) was born in Evanston, Illinois, the son of Lucille Levick (née Deemer) and John Paul Pennebaker, who was a commercial photographer. Pennebaker served in the Navy and later worked as an engineer, founding Electronics Engineering (the makers of the first computerized airline reservation system) before beginning his film career.
After falling under the influence of experimental filmmaker Francis Thompson, Pennebaker directed his first film, Daybreak Express, in 1953. Set to a classic Duke Ellington recording of the same name, the five-minute short of the soon-to-be-demolished Third Avenue elevated subway station in New York City is the earliest known example of Pennebaker's penchant for blending together documentary and experimental filmmaking techniques.

We had fun making the main menu for our new release of D. A. Pennebaker's groundbreaking documentary DONT LOOK BACK. This video, a two-minute loop composed of rare footage from the film, is structured around an outtake of Bob Dylan performing his song “She Belongs to Me,” with cutaways to some extraordinary material captured by Pennebaker’s camera—which at one point even lands in the hands of Dylan, whose footage of Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky’s swinging dance moves is priceless. -

Renowned filmmakers D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus follow determined animal rights activist Steven Wise into the courtroom for an unprecedented battle that seeks to utilize the writ of habeas corpus to expand legal “personhood” to include certain animals. Wise’s unusual plaintiffs—chimpanzees Tommy and Kiko, once famed showbiz stars—are now living in filth, struggling to survive. Wise and his impassioned legal team take us into the field, revealing gripping evidence of such abuse and plunging us into the intricacies of their case as they probe preconceived notions of what it means to be a non-human animal.
D A Pennebaker is regarded as one of the pioneers of cinéma vérité filmmaking. In 1959 he joined Drew Associated, where he produced the revolutionary Living Camera series and develop one of the first fully portable 16mm synchronized camera/soundrigs. His classics, Don't Look Back and Monterey Pop, defined the rock-film genre. Pennebaker is the recipient of an Academy Honorary Award.
Chris Hegedus has been directing, shooting, and editing films for four decades. In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious DGA Award for Startup.com. Along with D A Pennebaker, she directed the 1992 Academy Award–nominated film The War Room. Her other films include two-time Emmy Award–winning film Elaine Stritch at Liberty, The Energy War, Town Bloody Hall, Moon Over Broadway, Depeche Mode 101, and Kings of Pastry.
