Description:
One of the great concerns of the modern internet age stems from suspicion and doubt over just how much of our online activity is being monitored and what that information is being used for.
We are somewhat taken aback when ads appear on our social media accounts that cater specifically to us, seeking instead to achieve some level of anonymity and privacy when navigating the web. It is no wonder, then, that many users seek out an online experience that exists outside of conventional, surface means of navigation, such as
Google, and prefer instead to find alternative means to remain anonymous on the web.
One such alternative method of surfing comes through use of the deep web, a sordid pocket of the internet that can’t be easily monitored by introduces problems of its own
. If the World Wide Web offers a global online community, the deep web is the seedy, dangerous neighborhood rife with unlawful activity that you probably don’t want to find yourself in. This secretive network of hidden websites also known as the darknet isn’t indexed by standard search engines and requires an anonymous web browser, most notably Tor. Essentially, while the commonly used ‘surface web’ serves as the tip of the iceberg and consists of popular, widely visited websites, the deep web represents the misleadingly large, unseen rest of the iceberg lurking underneath the surface.
This freedom and anonymity often carries troublesome consequences. The lack of regulation tied to the deep web enables users to traffic in some nefarious and dirty underground business. The illegal trade of drugs and weaponry has grown commonplace, as has various forms of porn, sending authorities scrambling for a way to crack down on this black market and assert a level of control that is precisely what deep web users have been trying to avoid.
Unfortunately, the emphasis placed upon privacy and free reign has enabled a group of users with darker intentions to thrive, bringing a sinister and creepy dimension to a part of the internet that, by some estimates, accounts for as much as 80% of all online traffic.
These darker purposes can even transcend drugs or guns, opening the door for people to pursue any interest of theirs regardless of how lurid or illicit those interests may be. While buying weed may be a victimless crime that government shouldn’t have a hand in, the deep web is littered with disturbing, criminal platforms
that cater to violence-minded users who practice animal cruelty, aggressive misogyny and seem to derive pleasure and fascination from the misery of others.
The deep web has been reported to have even served as a communications base for the terrorists responsible for coordinating last year’s
Paris attacks.
To many of us, this secret internet underworld remains an intriguing and disconcerting mystery. How can something so unseemly operate directly under our noses while connecting so many? For better or, more accurately, for worse, these creepy compartments of the deep web can help offer a glimpse into just what is going on below the surface.
