John (Jack) Alexander Brymer OBE (27 January 1915 – 15 September 2003) was an English clarinettist. The Times called him "the leading clarinettist of his generation, perhaps of the century". He was largely self-taught as a player, and he performed as an amateur before being invited by Sir Thomas Beecham to join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1947. He remained with the orchestra until 1963, two years after Beecham's death.
Brymer later played in the BBC Symphony and London Symphony Orchestras. He was also associated with several chamber music ensembles, and maintained a lifelong pleasure in playing jazz. He held professorships during most of the period from 1950 to 1993, first at the Royal Academy of Music, then at the Royal Military School of Music, and finally at the Guildhall School of Music. He was a frequent broadcaster, both as a player and a presenter, and made recordings of solo works and with orchestras and smaller ensembles. He published two volumes of memoirs and a book about the clarinet.
Description This is a BBC Masterclass from about 1977. The original idea was to have one Jazz and one Classical clarinet, plus one each for Double Bass with Gary Karr. I think the money ran out, or after watching the first one they decided not to continue. The sound and video quality are poor, as this has been transferred through many formats over the years, but Jack does play the last movement of the Brahms Eb towards the end. There seems to be little actual footage of Jack playing other than in the orchestra. The very observant might spot Jacks wife, Joan, in the audience along with Mike Pearce, ( BBC Concert Orchestra, Philharmonia, etc.). I hope Maureen spots this and doesn't mind me posting it.

Johannes Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op. 115 (1891) Allegro 00:00 Adagio 12:29 Andantino – Presto non assai, ma con sentimento 23:43 Con moto 28:26 Jack Brymer, clarinet The Allegri String Quartet Painting: Auguste Renoir, Eugène Murer, 1877, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art First movement Like the quintet by Mozart, the strings begin the piece. Only several bars after the clarinet's entry is it finally made clear that the key of the music is B minor rather than D major (the latter being the key in which the exposition ends, leading smoothly into the repeat of the clarinet's opening). This movement sets an autumnal mood for the rest of the composition. One phrase, towards the middle played by the clarinet, sounds closely related to one in the first movement of Carl Maria ...
