The River Foss is an improved river in North Yorkshire, England, and a tributary of the River Ouse. It rises in the Foss Crooks woods near Oulston reservoir close to the village of Yearsley and runs south through the Vale of York to the Ouse. The name most likely comes from the Latin word Fossa, meaning ditch and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In 1069 William the Conqueror dammed the River Foss just south of York Castle, close to its confluence with the Ouse, to create a moat around the castle. This caused the river to flood further upstream in what is now the Hungate and Layerthorpe areas, forming a large lake that was known as the "King's Pool" or the "King's Fish Pond" and which provided fish for the markets. It was approximately 100 acres in size and fishing was only allowed by licence, except for the King's Men. The King's Pool was an integral part of the city's inner defences during the Middle Ages as the marsh was virtually impassable. This explains why there is no city wall between Layerthorpe Postern and the Red Tower.
In the 17th century, the King's Pool and the Foss were in a state of decline because silt from upriver collected in the Pool, and not enough water came down to move it on, despite the main channel of the River Foss having been deepened in 1608. Eventually the lake was too shallow to remain viable as a defence of the city. In 1644 the lake was shallow enough for Parliamentarian forces under Sir Thomas Fairfax to consider crossing it on foot as a way of breaking the Siege of York during the English Civil War.
In 1727 an order was placed upon Arthur Ingram, 6th Viscount of Irvine to scour the River Foss from the Castle Mills to Foss Bridge, making it eight yards wide at the top and four yards at the bottom, and, in 1731 the Little Foss, an extension to enclose the Castle, was also drained. In the 18th century, the water was so low that marshy islands were created (hence the area's modern name of Foss Islands). Citizens used the river as a rubbish tip which became a health hazard. Acts of Parliament in 1793 and 1801 were enacted to make the Foss navigable and they effectively saw the end of the King's Pool. The Foss Navigation Company canalised the river from 1778, to make it navigable as far as Sheriff Hutton.
Remains of Roman jetties, wharves and warehouses have been found by excavations and building works on the banks of the Foss, suggesting that water-borne transport and trade was important from early in the history of the city

Welcome to Best of the Northwest.
Well-traveled trails on the West Fork of the Foss River to Big Heart Lake and the East fork of the Foss River to Opal Lake can be connected via the High Alpine Route over or around Iron Cap Mountain.
Start from the Necklace Valley Trailhead heading towards the West fork of the Foss River Trailhead to Trout Lake. Climb up the valley past old growth trees and dramatic waterfalls to Copper Lake. Wrap around Copper Lake to Little Heart Lake before winding and climbing up then back down to Big Heart Lake. The trail continues on the East Ridge between Big Heart and Angeline Lake climbing and dropping to a scenic series of platforms that connect in-between Little Chetwoot and Chetwoot Lake. Ascend talus fields to the southern ridge of Iron Cap Mountain. Navigate the steep ridge on granite blocks until able to cross the face of the peak to the high northern ridge. Follow down and north to a lesser grade bushwhack then cut back on ledges avoiding cliffs along the flanks of the peak. A series of rises connects to the Tank Lakes where the trail and Cairns assist in routefinding. Follow the high ridge down to forested Opal Lake to connect to the Necklace Valley for a series of lakes before a long gradual decent down and along the East fork of the Foss River back to the Necklace Valley Trailhead.

The River Foss is an improved river in North Yorkshire, England, and a tributary of the River Ouse. It rises in the Foss Crooks woods near Oulston reservoir close to the village of Yearsley and runs south through the Vale of York to the Ouse. The name most likely comes from the Roman word Fossa, meaning ditch and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
The responsibility for the management of the river's drainage area lies with the Foss Internal Drainage Board (IDB). It has responsibility for the area from Crayke to the pre-1991 city boundary of York covering 9,085 hectares and 162.54 km of waterways. The Foss IDB is itself part of the York Consortium of Drainage Boards that oversees 10 IDB's in the Yorkshire region.
The typical river level range at the Foss Barrier is between 5.05m and 7.90m. The highest river level recorded at this location was 10.20 metres and the river level reached 9.34 metres on 23 January 2008.
The source of this river is a spring situated in the Howardian Hills adjacent to, and flowing into, Oulston Reservoir near Newburgh Priory, 4 miles (6.5 km) north of Easingwold. From there to the Blue Bridge in York, where it joins the River Ouse, it is 19.5 miles (31 km) in length. For part of its way it runs close to the B1363 between Brandsby and Stillington. The river flows in a series of wide meanders in southerly direction for most of its course towards York. As of 2010 the river is only navigable for some 1.5 miles (2 km) upstream of Castle Mills Lock. The bridges by Peasholme Green and Foss Bank restrict the headroom to an air space of 2.4 metres.

Six bodies found in two cars pulled from Lake Foss, Oklahoma
Six bodies were discovered in two cars found on the bottom of Lake Foss in Oklahoma on Tuesday. The cars, both at least 40 years old, were discovered when the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Marine Enforcement division were conducting training sessions involving new sonar technology. Police pulled up a blue 1969 Camaro white top which matched the description of the car owned by Jimmy Williams, a 16-year-old last seen on November 20, 1970. Reports said he was heading to a football game with two friends, Thomas Rios and Leah Johnson, both 18, but their plans may have changed and they went for a hunting trip instead. It rises in the Foss Crooks woods near Oulston reservoir close to the village of Yearsley and runs south through the Vale of York to the Ouse. The name most likely comes from the Latin word Fossa, meaning ditch and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In 1069 William the Conqueror dammed the River Foss just south of York Castle, close to its confluence with the Ouse, to create a moat around the castle. This caused the river to flood further upstream in what is now the Hungate and Layerthorpe areas, forming a large lake that was known as the "King's Pool" or the "King's Fish Pond" and which provided fish for the markets. It was approximately 100 acres in size and fishing was only allowed by licence, except for the King's Men. The King's Pool was an integral part of the city's inner defences during the Middle Ages as the marsh was virtually impassable. This explains why there is no city wall between Layerthorpe Postern and the Red Tower.
In the 17th century, the King's Pool and the Foss were in a state of decline because silt from upriver collected in the Pool, and not enough water came down to move it on, despite the main channel of the River Foss having been deepened in 1608. Eventually the lake was too shallow to remain viable as a defence of the city. In 1644 the lake was shallow enough for Parliamentarian forces under Sir Thomas Fairfax to consider crossing it on foot as a way of breaking the Siege of York during the English Civil War.
In 1727 an order was placed upon Arthur Ingram, 6th Viscount of Irvine to scour the River Foss from the Castle Mills to Foss Bridge, making it eight yards wide at the top and four yards at the bottom, and, in 1731 the Little Foss, an extension to enclose the Castle, was also drained. In the 18th century, the water was so low that marshy islands were created (hence the area's modern name of Foss Islands). Citizens used the river as a rubbish tip which became a health hazard. Acts of Parliament in 1793 and 1801 were enacted to make the Foss navigable and they effectively saw the end of the King's Pool. The Foss Navigation Company canalised the river from 1778, to make it navigable as far as Sheriff Hutton.
Remains of Roman jetties, wharves and warehouses have been found by excavations and building works on the banks of the Foss, suggesting that water-borne transport and trade was important from early in the history of the city

Well-traveled trails on the West Fork of the Foss River to Big Heart Lake and the East fork of the Foss River to Opal Lake can be connected via the High Alpine Route over or around Iron Cap Mountain.
Start from the Necklace Valley Trailhead heading towards the West fork of the Foss River Trailhead to Trout Lake. Climb up the valley past old growth trees and dramatic waterfalls to Copper Lake. Wrap around Copper Lake to Little Heart Lake before winding and climbing up then back down to Big Heart Lake. The trail continues on the East Ridge between Big Heart and Angeline Lake climbing and dropping to a scenic series of platforms that connect in-between Little Chetwoot and Chetwoot Lake. Ascend talus fields to the southern ridge of Iron Cap Mountain. Navigate the steep ridge on granite blocks until able to cross the face of the peak to the high northern ridge. Follow down and north to a lesser grade bushwhack then cut back on ledges avoiding cliffs along the flanks of the peak. A series of rises connects to the Tank Lakes where the trail and Cairns assist in routefinding. Follow the high ridge down to forested Opal Lake to connect to the Necklace Valley for a series of lakes before a long gradual decent down and along the East fork of the Foss River back to the Necklace Valley Trailhead.

Six bodies were discovered in two cars found on the bottom of Lake Foss in Oklahoma on Tuesday. The cars, both at least 40 years old, were discovered when the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Marine Enforcement division were conducting training sessions involving new sonar technology.
Police pulled up a blue 1969 Camaro white top which matched the description of the car owned by Jimmy Williams, a 16-year-old last seen on November 20, 1970. Reports said he was heading to a football game with two friends, Thomas Rios and Leah Johnson, both 18, but their plans may have changed and they went for a hunting trip instead. No trace of the car, or any of their bodies, was found after that autumn evening. The three bodies in the Camaro are suspected to belong to the missing teenagers.
The second car recovered was a 1957 Chevy and it also contained the remains of three people. Police first suspected that the car belonged to a couple last seen in Canute, a town about 10 miles south of the lake, some time in the 1960s. It was later believed, however, that the Chevy was owned by Alvi Porter, a 69-year-old man that went missing in 1969. His granddaughter, Debbie McManamman, said in a television interview that she believed the car to be her grandfather's green Chevy. It is not known who was in the car with him.
The highway patrol discovered the vehicles on September 10, then went back on a diving mission to investigate. The cars, which were found next to each other, were pulled out on Tuesday.
Internet users from the area have left comments on news sites speculating that the cars may have ended up in that part of the lake due to a particularly dangerous stretch of road near it.

It is equally famous for its enormous cathedral, York Minster and other places of interest such as Clifford’s Tower and The Shambles. York is extremely easy to get to, only being a short distance away from Leeds (roughly 25 minutes by train, 30-45 minutes by car). Yorkshire Coastliner also run buses between Leeds to York and Scarborough. York is the heart of Yorkshire that also hosts the Roman name Eboracum and the Viking name Jorvik. In the middle ages, it was known for its wool trading. In the 19th Century however, it became well known for its Railway Industry and Chocolate Industry which have recently become less prominent. So what is there to do in York?
Your evenings are not going to be dull either, there are plenty of restaurants, cafe’s and bars, among street entertainment and theatres. Whatever your tastes are, there’s plenty to do in York to suit both young and old alike. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained. In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The railway promoter George Hudson was responsible for bringing the railway to York in 1839. Although Hudson's career as a railway entrepreneur eventually ended in disgrace and bankruptcy, his promotion of his own railway company, the York and North Midland Railway and of York over Leeds, helped establish York as a major railway centre by the late 1800s. The introduction of the railways also established engineering in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, the railway accommodated the headquarters and works of the North Eastern Railway, which employed over 5,500 people in York. The railway was also instrumental in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who was joined in 1869 by his brother the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. Another chocolate manufacturer, Terry's of York was also a major employer. By 1900 the railways and confectionery had become the two major industries of the city. York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence. The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, under the name of Eboracum. It became in turn the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained. In the 19th century, York became a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy. From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2001 the urban area had a population of 137,505, while in 2010 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 202,400. The railway promoter George Hudson was responsible for bringing the railway to York in 1839. Although Hudson's career as a railway entrepreneur eventually ended in disgrace and bankruptcy, his promotion of his own railway company, the York and North Midland Railway and of York over Leeds, helped establish York as a major railway centre by the late 1800s. The introduction of the railways also established engineering in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, the railway accommodated the headquarters and works of the North Eastern Railway, which employed over 5,500 people in York. The railway was also instrumental in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who was joined in 1869 by his brother the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. The new chemists' shop on Kirkgate
It is best known for its recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, which has been made bigger during 2012 with new backstreets to explore, more goods on display and real stories of York people and businesses to discover.
The street was named after the museum's founder, Dr John L. Kirk, a North Yorkshire country doctor who collected everyday objects and wanted to keep them safe for future generations.

Conditions in the overcrowded prison were harsh and brutal and the real stories of the prisoners and staff are told in sometimes gruesome detail.
Turpin spent his last six months in the Debtors' Prison, which was built in 1701-5, and today houses half of the museum's displays. The other half of the museum was originally the Female Prison, built in 1780-83.
The museum, which opened in 1938, was named after the former York Castle, which stood on the site.
Raindale Mill and the riverside area
Remains of the former Castle walls can be seen outside the museum next to the River Foss and our Victorian watermill, Raindale Mill.
Work has taken place in Spring 2012 to restore the mill and the nearby riverside area and the waterwheel can be seen in action again on many weekends, between 11am and 1pm - but please check before visiting to avoid disappointment.

The museum, which opened in 1938, was named after the former York Castle, which stood on the site.
Raindale Mill and the riverside area
Remains of the former Castle walls can be seen outside the museum next to the River Foss and our Victorian watermill, Raindale Mill.
Work has taken place in Spring 2012 to restore the mill and the nearby riverside area and the waterwheel can be seen in action again on many weekends, between 11am and 1pm - but please check before visiting to avoid disappointment.
York Castle Museum is a museum located in York, North Yorkshire, England, on the site of York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068. The museum itself was founded by Dr John L Kirk in 1938, and is housed in prison buildings which were built on the site of the castle in the 18th century, the Debtors Prison (built in 1701-05 using stone from the ruins of the castle) and the Female Prison (built 1780-1785).

The Westfjords region has sometimes been dubbed "the most famous unknown place in Iceland". Well, throw in the prestigious "European Destination of Excellence" awards and add to that the fact that the Lonely Planet travel guide put the area on its top 10 list of regions in the world to visit in 2011, and you will see that the Westfjords are becoming increasingly famous -- or perhaps less unknown.
Lonely Planet, the respected travel guide publisher, placed the Westfjords in its top 10 regions of the world to visit in 2011, saying that the "oddly shaped" peninsula is "as isolated as it is spectacular". Luckily, "isolated" does not mean inaccessible. With only 7000 inhabitants in the area, each person has over 1,2 km2 of personal space, so there is ample room for any visitors as well.
Although the locals are great, it is, by and large, the nature that attracts visitors. For understandable reasons as well: it is untouched and almost uninhabited. The cliffs and valleys are packed with birds, the uninhabited fjords offer a moment of silence and tranquillity, and the Arctic fox proudly roams the mountains and inlets. The waterfalls are high and the streams pure. The distances are long and the fjords are deep. And then there are places where there are no roads at all.
The Westfjords are a great place to watch the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) during the winter and equally fantastic to experience the midnight sun during the summer.
Visiting the Westfjords is surely a different experience. It is Iceland, but yet a different Iceland altogether.

A pitbull was raped and murdered in Thuston County, Washington last week. The animal was found hanging from a tree, with its feet just out of reach of the ground, on Department of Natural Resources land. A mountain biker came across the macabre scene while cycling through the property. The pitbull had clearly died of asphyxiation from whatever contraption its killer had constructed, reported Seattle Times ... This is horrific.”....
