Start your morning right with Megan's brown rice breakfast pudding!

INGREDIENTS
2 cups almond milk, unsweetened
1 vanilla bean, halved and seeds scraped out
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cinnamon stick
¼ tsp. fine sea salt
¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
3 cups cooked short grain brown rice, day old rice is best
1 pint blueberries, organic
1 pint raspberries, organic
1 pint blackberries, organic
Toasted flaked coconut, for garnish
RECIPE
In a large sauce pot combine the almond milk, vanilla bean pod and seeds, vanilla extract, cinnamon stick, salt and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes or until it reduces slightly.
Next remove the cinnamon stick and vanilla bean and add in the cooked brown rice. Stir together and cook for another 10-15 minutes or until it’s thickened to your desired consistency. If you like it slightly looser cook it for less time, if you like a thicker pudding cook it longer.
Scoop some into a shallow bowl, sprinkle with extra brown sugar and top with the berries and a sprinkling of coconut flakes.

The city of Cleveland reached a settlement in the lawsuit over the killing of Tamir Rice on Monday, agreeing to pay the family $6 million. The city is expected to pay $3 million in 2016 and the remaining $3 million next year, according to ABC News. "The resolution is nothing to celebrate because a 12-year-old child needlessly lost his life," attorney Subodh Chandra said of the latest development in the wrongful death suit.

Cleveland, Ohio has granted the Tamir Rice family a six million dollar settlement in a civil lawsuit filed against the city and its law enforcement. Unrepentant officials decided to twist the knife into Rice’s parents one more time by saying they hope they spend the settlement money on a campaign warning of the dangers of toy guns. "THE CITY OF CLEVELAND announced on Monday that it will pay $6 million to settle a lawsuit by the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was tragically killed by police officers in 2014 while holding a toy gun.
The Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association released a statement responding to the settlement. Rather than acknowledging any error on the police’s part, the association suggested that the Rice family use the funds to “educate the youth of Cleveland in the dangers associated with the mishandling of both real and facsimile firearms.””*

Rice is the seed of the monocot plants Oryza sativa (Asian rice) or Oryza glaberrima (African rice). As a cereal grain, it is the most important staple food for a large part of the world's human population, especially in Asia and the West Indies. It is the grain with the second-highest worldwide production, after maize (corn), according to data for 2010.
Since a large portion of maize crops are grown for purposes other than human consumption, rice is the most important grain with regard to human nutrition and caloric intake, providing more than one fifth of the calories consumed worldwide by the human species.
There are many varieties of rice and culinary preferences tend to vary regionally. For example in India, there is a saying that "grains of rice should be like two brothers, close but not stuck together"[citation needed], while in the Far East there is a preference for softer, stickier varieties. Because of its importance as a staple food, rice has considerable cultural importance. For example, rice is first mentioned in the Yajur Veda and then is frequently referred to in Sanskrit texts.[citation needed] Rice is often directly associated with prosperity and fertility, therefore there is the custom of throwing rice at weddings.

Kimberly Denise Jones (born July 11, 1975), better known by her stage name Lil' Kim, is an American rapper and actress who was a member of the group Junior M.A.F.I.A..
Jones was born and raised in Brooklyn, living much of her adolescent life on the streets after being expelled from home. As a teenager, Kim would rap for fun, being heavily influenced by other female MCs like MC Lyte and Lady of Rage. When word got to The Notorious B.I.G. that she could rhyme, he made Jones perform a freestyle for him on the spot. Impressed with her, he took her in and she began her music career in 1995 with the group Junior M.A.F.I.A., whose debut album Conspiracy generated three hit singles. In late 1996, her solo debut album Hard Core was released. Hard Core was certified double platinum and spawned three consecutive #1 rap hits that included: "No Time" "Not Tonight (Ladies Night remix)" and "Crush on You", a record for a female rapper. Her following albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), both were certified platinum by the RIAA, making Kim the only female rapper besides Missy Elliott to have at least 3 platinum albums so far. Kim solidified her star power in 2001, when "Lady Marmalade", a song Kim was featured on, went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That made her the second female rapper to earn a #1 on that chart.

Cleveland, Ohio has granted the Tamir Rice family a six million dollar settlement in a civil lawsuit filed against the city and its law enforcement. Unrepentant officials decided to twist the knife into Rice’s parents one more time by saying they hope they spend the settlement money on a campaign warning of the dangers of toy guns. Plot: In rural Comfort, Texas, the strict protestant Horizon Bible church community holds its annual, pretty strictly supervised summer camp, with mandatory prayer sessions, for fraternizing teens from all over the States. The day before their departure, storm weather is announced, the busses even ride early to keep ahead, but the wind makes a river rise too fast: the busses are caught, everybody must run on foot. As TV reporters see from their helicopter, the rising water is too fast for one bus after choosing the wrong way, children and staff must climb in trees but can't cling on very long. Some kids break down in understandable panic, others prove true and unselfish courage, including Brad, the natural leader, every girl's dream and the most boisterous of the pack, occasionally braving the rather totalitarian system. Worried parents fly in to the rescue center in a public school, where survivors and corpses are brought in, including that of Tonya Smith; her overprotective father heartlessly does like always: rebuke poor older brother Michael, an obedient, fat kid who never gets a break or treat and still is never good enough for pa's praise, now even gets blamed for 'failing' to watch over his kid sisters, obviously brother Koons's adult team's job, actually just beyond human strength. A brave reporter can't stand by idly as too many victims are still in desperate need for the military rescue crew to handle, but his own helicopter gets in trouble. The growing victims list and guilt feelings, even just for surviving when others didn't, cause a flood of tears too...

The city of Cleveland reached a settlement in the lawsuit over the killing of Tamir Rice on Monday, agreeing to pay the family $6 million. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not: ⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain free and therefore that rice is not healthy ⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and on the preparation of the rice. INGREDIENTS
2 cups almond milk, unsweetened
1 vanilla bean, halved and seeds scraped out
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cinnamon stick
¼ tsp. fine sea salt
¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
3 cups cooked short grain brown rice, day old rice is best
1 pint blueberries, organic
1 pint raspberries, organic
1 pint blackberries, organic
Toasted flaked coconut, for garnish
RECIPE
In a large sauce pot combine the almond milk, vanilla bean pod and seeds, vanilla extract, cinnamon stick, salt and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes or until it reduces slightly.
Next remove the cinnamon stick and vanilla bean and add in the cooked brown rice. Stir together and cook for another 10-15 minutes or until it’s thickened to your desired consistency. If you like it slightly looser cook it for less time, if you like a thicker pudding cook it longer.
Scoop some into a shallow bowl, sprinkle with extra brown sugar and top with the berries and a sprinkling of coconut flakes.

Cleveland, Ohio has granted the Tamir Rice family a six million dollar settlement in a civil lawsuit filed against the city and its law enforcement. Dr. Axe here and today I am answering the question, “Is rice healthy” and explaining the difference between white rice and brown rice.
My answer is that it really depends on you. I will show you the pros and cons of rice and go over what I believe is the healthiest rice today. There is a debate today about if you should consume rice or not:
⁃ The paleo diet community says to stay grain free and therefore that rice is not healthy
⁃ Chinese medicine followers and vegans think rice can be an incredible superfood
I believe there is validity to both but it depends on the person and on the preparation of the rice.
Rice to stay away from: Refined White Rice- (this is not jasmine or basmati rice but the sticky white rice from fast food or Chinese restaurants.)
Rice Cons:
• Fiber, minerals and vitamins have been removed.
• Study shows that people are twice as likely to develop diabetes as opposed to those eating whole grain brown rice.
• Contains phytic acid (enzyme inhibitor) which keeps you from absorbing and digesting vitamins and minerals.
• Contains proteins that are difficult to digest
Rice Pros:
• Whole grain brown rice is high in B3 which is good for heart health.
• Whole grain brown rice is high in selenium which supports the thyroid and kidneys.
• Certain types of rice contain GABA, a neurotransmitter, that can support the brain and helps reduce anxiety as well as support metabolism.
So….is rice healthy? Is brown rice healthy? It depends on how it is prepared. I believe that
if rice is soaked and sprouted then it unlocks the vitamins and minerals versus most rices that aren’t sprouted.
I personally consume an organic rice from the company, True Roots. It is a germinated brown rice (soaked and sprouted) which kills off phytic acid and is easier to digest.
In Chinese medicine, look up “qi” or “chi.” They believe that short grain brown rice increase your body’s “qi” which is your body’s life source and energy. It is considered to be one of the #1 healing foods and I suggest to my patients to make a “congee” with chicken bone broth, brown rice and vegetables such as carrots, and celery. This chicken vegetable rice soup is healing and nourishing to the body.
In conclusion, is rice healthy? Yes, it can be if you are doing sprouted rice that is traditionally prepared.
Simply, stay away from white refined rice that is void of vitamins and minerals and can cause a spike in your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Personnel: Norman Blake (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Tony Rice (vocals, guitar).Like consummate musicians, for their first album together Norman Blake and Tony Rice largely ignored flash and speed in favor of songs and mood. There is some exceptional flatpicking here, but even the more manic passages are tempered by a softness that is striking, and perhaps even a little disappointing, in its modesty. Once the listener gets past the desire to hear hardcore chops, though, the album reveals its full beauty, especially in Blake's gorgeous "Last Train From Poor Valley" and Rice's cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'." Perky fiddle tune medleys and bluegrass standards provide some balance, but this is gentle listening throughout. ~ Jim Smith

That craving drove the evolution of the rice cooker into a high-tech appliance with a host of functions. Rice cookers can do more than just cook rice. Homemakers have begun using them to put together amazing dishes. The latest rice cookers are even being used to bake cakes.

For many, a bowl of rice is a simple trip to the supermarket. Rarely do we think about the production of our food. The documentary shows a typical day in the life of a rice farmer and the laborious process of rice farming. You can see how well-connected the whole system is and the number of parties involved in farming rice. The way in which the farmer gently treats his animals illustrates the importance of every single life and how it is part of a greater system.From cultivation to sale the visuals give you a sense of the strenuous, manual and monotonous work in the rice paddies. Every action has an intention -- the self-grown rice is used to feed the fishes, which will be caught and cooked for dinner. Every step and actor in the process is part of an efficient, self-sustaining system.
The simplicity of the video appeals to your senses and gives the viewer a real understanding of these conditions. You are transported into another world by listening to the original sounds.
