Your doctor has recommended that you undergo surgery to repair a hiatal hernia. But what does that actually mean?
Your diaphragm is a muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen and helps you to breathe.
Normally, the diaphragm has an opening for the esophagus to pass through where it connects with the stomach.
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes upward through this small opening.

Your hiatal hernia may be causing considerable discomfort, with symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain and belching. The reasons why hiatal hernias form are not known, but they are quite common.
A hernia is dangerous only if it becomes strangulated. That means that the portion of the stomach that is pushed up into the chest may become pinched - preventing blood from reaching it.
Medical Malpractice
If this happens, you may require emergency surgery to restore blood flow and to repair the hernia.
Luckily, the vast majority of hernias are not considered to be emergencies. However, if you should ever feel a sudden onset of severe pain in your chest or stomach, you should seek medical attention immediately.

In general terms, we can say that a hernia occurs when the layers that make up the abdominal wall weaken. In other words, the fabric of muscle and other tissues which protect the gut, develops a defect, or weakness. Through that defect the peritoneum (PER-IT-TA-NEE-UM) - and perhaps other organs - push their way outward, forming a lump which can be felt - and sometimes seen - protruding from the abdomen.
In men, the inguinal canal contains blood vessels that supply the testes, as well as the vessel that carries sperm to the penis. Hernias that occur due to a weakness in the abdominal wall at the inguinal canal, are called inguinal hernias. And not surprisingly, men are 25 times more likely than women to experience a hernia in this area.

On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to the operating table.
In the operating room, a nurse will begin preparation by clipping or shaving your groin.
The surgeon will then apply antiseptic solution to the skin over the hernia, place a sterile drape around the operative site and
will inject a local anesthetic. Usually, the surgeon will inject more than one spot - to make sure that the entire area is thoroughly numb.
Or in the case of a spinal, the anesthetic will be injected into the small of your back. After allowing a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect,

Hernias and inguinal hernia specifically, are one of the most common injuries men suffer from working out. What causes them and what can you do about them? In this video, I show you not only the exercise that caused both of my hernias but also what you can do to make sure you perform it correctly and prevent it from happening to you.
Inguinal hernias are the most popular type of hernia. They are not tears in muscle but rather in fascia. Some people are genetically born with weaker fascia than others. This leaves them more susceptible to not only hernia injuries but also lower back strains as well. The important point to consider however is that while muscles may not be torn in this injury, the muscles above and below the inguinal canal can influence your chance of injury.
The inguinal canal is bordered by the rectus abdominus at the top and the adductors and groin muscles from below. The tension created by these two muscle groups across the fascia can lead to torsion and strain that causes a tear, when the force they generate becomes nonlinear. As demonstrated in the video, when you pull on a piece of paper from both sides with equal force, you do not tear the paper. When you change the direction of the force so that one is set at an angle that isn’t parallel to the other, you can create torque and tears.
I apply this to the one armed row exercise. This back exercise is one of my absolute favorites for building a bigger back. That said, the position of the movement can set you up for failure if you don’t remain conscientious about your core. If you keep your core and back leg lined up you will perform this correctly. That said, if in an attempt to lift more weight you cheat the dumbbell up by twisting your torso, you now apply torque to your fascia by rotating the abs in relation to the adductors.
This is just one example. There are many others of course. The key is that you need to maintain proper alignment as much as possible in your workouts and be sure to use good form. What are hernias?
The hernias we talk about in this http://DoctorsExpressWestHartford.com Medical Minute are the most common hernia- groin, or inguinal hernias. More commonly found in men, hernias form as a bulge accompanied by pain, in their groin. Men have about a 27% lifetime risk of having hernia at some point in their life, and women, a much lower incidence- only 3% or so of women get hernias at some point in their life. Other types of hernias, such as abdominal hiatal hernias are also common, but groin hernias tend to outnumber abdominal hernias by about 3 to 1.
What causes a hernia?
Hernias often form in people with weakened abdominal muscles or in those who do a lot of heavy lifting or straining. This is the main reason that young men form them more often than others. With men, without getting into too much physiology, men of course have testicles and scrotum and those structures descend through the inguinal canal. This canal is much larger in men than in women and that's part of the reason men tend to be more susceptible to hernias than women.
Screening and diagnosis of hernias
If you are having abdominal pain or pelvic bulge and pain, you want to see physician, and he or she will do an exam. They will use their finger, and they will see if you have a bulge in your scrotum or on your groin and they'll see if its reducible or not. If the exam doesn't give them the answer, they can perform an ultrasound, a very, inexpensive test that can tell you the same day whether a hernia is present.
What to do if you think you have a hernia
Most of the time hernias don't cause problems. People can have them their entire life. When they do cause pain though that's a problem, and a concern that complications may have arisen. Most common hernias are what we call reducible; you can take your finger or you can lie down in bed and due to the effects of gravity, the bulge in the groin will actually disappear, which means the intestinal contents actually go back into the abdominal cavity or to the correct location. If it's not reducible by lying down or using a finger or having a physician trying to reduce it, then there are concerns about things like strangulation, or incarceration occurring. Without getting into details of what those are, if those concerns are there, then you need to see a surgeon, and there may be a need for surgery.
Treating a hernia
As I stated before, hernias are actually something that you can watch for years without being treated. If however, it is causing pain, we generally refer folks to a surgeon who can do a very simple laparoscopic surgery.

A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or the fascia of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. There are different kinds of hernia, each requiring a specific management or treatment.
By far the most common hernias develop in the abdomen, when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a localized hole, or "defect", through which adipose tissue, or abdominal organs covered with peritoneum, may protrude. Another common hernia involves the spinal discs and causes sciatica. A hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach protrudes into the mediastinum through the esophageal opening in the diaphragm.
Hernias may or may not present with either pain at the site, a visible or palpable lump, or in some cases more vague symptoms resulting from pressure on an organ which has become "stuck" in the hernia, sometimes leading to organ dysfunction. Fatty tissue usually enters a hernia first, but it may be followed or accompanied by an organ.
Symptoms may not be present in some inguinal hernias while in some other hernias, including inguinal, they are. Symptoms and signs vary depending on the type of hernia. In the case of reducible hernias, a bulge in the groin or in another abdominal area can often be seen and felt. When standing, such bulge becomes more obvious. Besides the bulge, other symptoms include pain in the groin that may also include a heavy or dragging sensation, and in men, there is sometimes pain and swelling in the scrotum around the testicular area.

Luckily, the vast majority of hernias are not considered to be emergencies. However, if you should ever feel a sudden onset of severe pain in your chest or stomach, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Through that defect the peritoneum (PER-IT-TA-NEE-UM) - and perhaps other organs - push their way outward, forming a lump which can be felt - and sometimes seen - protruding from the abdomen.
In men, the inguinal canal contains blood vessels that supply the testes, as well as the vessel that carries sperm to the penis. Hernias that occur due to a weakness in the abdominal wall at the inguinal canal, are called inguinal hernias. And not surprisingly, men are 25 times more likely than women to experience a hernia in this area.

On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to the operating table.
In the operating room, a nurse will begin preparation by clipping or shaving your groin.
The surgeon will then apply antiseptic solution to the skin over the hernia, place a sterile drape around the operative site and
will inject a local anesthetic. Usually, the surgeon will inject more than one spot - to make sure that the entire area is thoroughly numb.

Hernias and inguinal hernia specifically, are one of the most common injuries men suffer from working out. What causes them and what can you do about them? In this video, I show you not only the exercise that caused both of my hernias but also what you can do to make sure you perform it correctly and prevent it from happening to you.
Inguinal hernias are the most popular type of hernia. They are not tears in muscle but rather in fascia. Some people are genetically born with weaker fascia than others. This leaves them more susceptible to not only hernia injuries but also lower back strains as well. The important point to consider however is that while muscles may not be torn in this injury, the muscles above and below the inguinal canal can influence your chance of injury.
The inguinal canal is bordered by the rectus abdominus at the top and the adductors and groin muscles from below. The tension created by these two muscle groups across the fascia can lead to torsion and strain that causes a tear, when the force they generate becomes nonlinear. As demonstrated in the video, when you pull on a piece of paper from both sides with equal force, you do not tear the paper. When you change the direction of the force so that one is set at an angle that isn’t parallel to the other, you can create torque and tears.
I apply this to the one armed row exercise. This back exercise is one of my absolute favorites for building a bigger back. That said, the position of the movement can set you up for failure if you don’t remain conscientious about your core. If you keep your core and back leg lined up you will perform this correctly. That said, if in an attempt to lift more weight you cheat the dumbbell up by twisting your torso, you now apply torque to your fascia by rotating the abs in relation to the adductors.

Hernias and inguinal hernia specifically, are one of the most common injuries men suffer from working out. What causes them and what can you do about them? In this video, I show you not only the exercise that caused both of my hernias but also what you can do to make sure you perform it correctly and prevent it from happening to you.
Inguinal hernias are the most popular type of hernia. They are not tears in muscle but rather in fascia. Some people are genetically born with weaker fascia than others. This leaves them more susceptible to not only hernia injuries but also lower back strains as well. The important point to consider however is that while muscles may not be torn in this injury, the muscles above and below the inguinal canal can influence your chance of injury.
The inguinal canal is bordered by the rectus abdominus at the top and the adductors and groin muscles from below. The tension created by these two muscle groups across the fascia can lead to torsion and strain that causes a tear, when the force they generate becomes nonlinear. As demonstrated in the video, when you pull on a piece of paper from both sides with equal force, you do not tear the paper. When you change the direction of the force so that one is set at an angle that isn’t parallel to the other, you can create torque and tears.
I apply this to the one armed row exercise. This back exercise is one of my absolute favorites for building a bigger back. That said, the position of the movement can set you up for failure if you don’t remain conscientious about your core. If you keep your core and back leg lined up you will perform this correctly. That said, if in an attempt to lift more weight you cheat the dumbbell up by twisting your torso, you now apply torque to your fascia by rotating the abs in relation to the adductors.

More commonly found in men, hernias form as a bulge accompanied by pain, in their groin. Men have about a 27% lifetime risk of having hernia at some point in their life, and women, a much lower incidence- only 3% or so of women get hernias at some point in their life. Other types of hernias, such as abdominal hiatal hernias are also common, but groin hernias tend to outnumber abdominal hernias by about 3 to 1.
What causes a hernia?
Hernias often form in people with weakened abdominal muscles or in those who do a lot of heavy lifting or straining. This is the main reason that young men form them more often than others. With men, without getting into too much physiology, men of course have testicles and scrotum and those structures descend through the inguinal canal. This canal is much larger in men than in women and that's part of the reason men tend to be more susceptible to hernias than women.
Screening and diagnosis of hernias
If you are having abdominal pain or pelvic bulge and pain, you want to see physician, and he or she will do an exam. They will use their finger, and they will see if you have a bulge in your scrotum or on your groin and they'll see if its reducible or not. If the exam doesn't give them the answer, they can perform an ultrasound, a very, inexpensive test that can tell you the same day whether a hernia is present.
What to do if you think you have a hernia
Most of the time hernias don't cause problems. People can have them their entire life. When they do cause pain though that's a problem, and a concern that complications may have arisen. Most common hernias are what we call reducible; you can take your finger or you can lie down in bed and due to the effects of gravity, the bulge in the groin will actually disappear, which means the intestinal contents actually go back into the abdominal cavity or to the correct location. If it's not reducible by lying down or using a finger or having a physician trying to reduce it, then there are concerns about things like strangulation, or incarceration occurring. Without getting into details of what those are, if those concerns are there, then you need to see a surgeon, and there may be a need for surgery.

However, the intestine may become trapped or incarcerated inside the tissue sack. After about six hours, the intestine inside the incarcerated intestine hernia may lose its blood supply, this is called strangulated hernia and is an emergency that requires an immediate surgical procedure to correct. First, the woman I was doing this to was my fiancé and became my wife. She has already posted comments on this video indicating how much this helped her asthma and improved her health.
Second, I am not a doctor, so when I've done this with people I have not charged them for doing it. I've done it for FREE, which means I get no financial gain from helping people with these techniques. The fact is, that these techniques work and if you read through the comments you'll find many people indicating how much this has helped them.
I learned this from a naturopath who did it to me and it did more to improve my health than anything I've ever had done for me. He did this with hundreds of people and has taught it to dozens of others who have also helped hundreds of people. This procedure is harmless and non-invasive. If it doesn't work or help, then go to a doctor and have surgery. It doesn't hurt to try things like this first.
I'm not opposed to doctors or medicine, I just think that harmless, non-invasive techniques should be tried first when there are non-life-threatening health problems like this.
Also, for all of you who want to make rude comments about Elena (the lady in the video) , she and I were married shortly after this, and although we still aren't together, she is a very sweet and wonderful person and we are still good friends.
I don't allow rude comments to be posted about her. I suffered from asthma attack and could not breath normally and after applying this technique once a day hiatal hernia stopped bothering me."
