Maine (
i/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in New England, in the United States. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 42nd most populous of the 50 U.S. states. It is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the east and north, respectively. Maine is the northernmost state in the contiguous United States east of the Great Lakes. It is known for its jagged, rocky coastline; low, rolling mountains; heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways; and also its seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clams. In spite of its maritime position, it has a continental climate even in coastal areas such as its largest city, Portland. The state capital is Augusta with a population of 19,136 (2010), making it the third least-populous state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont and Pierre, South Dakota) in the nation.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

Basketball
Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.048 m) high mounted to a backboard at each end.
A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the shooting team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line, and two points if shot from in front of the line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, after the other team was assessed with certain fouls. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) is issued when the score is tied at the end of regulation. The ball can be advanced on the court by throwing it to a teammate, or by bouncing it while walking or running (dribbling). It is a violation to lift, or drag, one's pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling.

Dr. Alban
Alban Uzoma Nwapa (born 26 August 1957), known by his stage name Dr. Alban, is a Nigerian-born Swedish musician and producer with his own record label dr-records. His music can best be described as a Eurodance/hip-hop reggae with a dancehall style. He sold an estimated 16 million records worldwide and is most famous for his worldwide 1992 hit "It's My Life" which was one of the songs from the album titled "One Love".
Biography
Dr. Alban was born as Alban Uzoma Nwapa into a middle-class family of 10 children in Oguta, Imo state, Nigeria. He had his secondary education at Christ The King College, Aba, Nigeria and spent most of his youth in his hometown Oguta. At age of 23, he travelled to Sweden to study dentistry. To be able to finance his studies, Dr. Alban became a DJ. He worked as a DJ at the Stockholm club Alphabet Street. Very quickly his name became widely known, especially since Dr. Alban often sang to the records he put on the turntable. DJ René Hedemyr discovered him. Alban finished his studies and even opened his own dentistry practice, keeping his disk jockeying as a lucrative sideline.

As the name Indian Summer suggests, New England’s most well known season dates back to the golden years of the Native American Indian. The warm days at the beginning of autumn were once the most important time of the year for hunting because it was then that the region’s animals grazed prior to the onset of winter. According to legend the strong dark red colour of the leaves symbolized the blood of slaughtered bears. The ‘autumn summer’ was thus closely associated with the Native Indian hunters of old. Even today the Acadia National Park combines all the natural beauty of Maine in a unique way that captivates all those who experience its irresistible charm.

The Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park’s irresistible attractions.During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this ‘fifth season’ of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the ‘Bubbles’ from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called ‘leaf reports’ are announced in the newspapers and on television, there’s an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the ‘Leaf Peepers.’ Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia’s beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

Much of Maine is forested, but between the thousands of lakes and rivers, and the extensive Atlantic Ocean coastline, residents of Maine spend plenty of time on the water. On March 15th, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine became the 23rd, and easternmost, state of the Union.

Maine is known as the "Pine Tree State." Much of Maine is forested, but between the thousands of lakes and rivers, and the extensive Atlantic Ocean coastline, residents of Maine spend plenty of time on the water. On March 15th, 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise, Maine became the 23rd, and easternmost, state of the Union.
Our series of US geography videos "Visit the 50 States," gives you a little history and interesting facts about each state. For every state, you'll learn when it entered the Union, what's its motto, how did it get its nickname, and see what the flag, seal, and state capitol building all look like. I highly recommend Bar Harbor to anyone visiting Maine there's so much to do and although we did not see a whale the boat ride was a lot of fun and very informative. If you are going to Bar Harbor another MUST is Cadillac Mountain (the video after next).

Acadia National Park in Maine is the East Coast Version of Yosemite. A destination for millions of people annually it is also a great destination to take your RV or pack the tent and spend some days communing with nature. Tip 1 - Ditch the car or RV and take the free park shuttle. Driving throughout Acadia the shuttle provides access to all the popular spots without stress or worry.
Tip 2 - Hike the "bar" in Bar Harbor. At low tide a sand bar allows foot and vehicle traffic to cross to the island across the harbor. Even if you do not make it there is sea life right there. Hike the trails of Acadia! Seems simple enough but so many don't do it. plan on hiking at least one hill top route during your stay.
Tip 3 - Bring a bike. Acadia National Park is one of the most bike friendly parks in teh world. With 45 miles of carriage roads open to cycling the dirt paths allow you to discover the interior of the park by bike.
Tip 4 - Go in early September. Only one time during the year does the US Coast Guard allow you access to their lighthouses.

The Rivals - B&M; vs B&A; vs CV
"The Rivals" is a look at the waning days of the Boston & Maine Railroad and its competition with the east-west former Boston & Albany route vs it Fitchburg mainline and also the battle between it's north-south Connecticut River Route vs the (now former) Central Vermont Railway. Nearly all of the footage differs from that previously used in the B&M; Fitchburg and Conn River videos that were released earlier. This original VHS tape version of "The Rivals" is being presented here as a preview to the now in production remake version which will appear sometime on DVD. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (commonly New Haven), (reporting mark NH) was a railroad that operated in the northeast United States from 1872 to 1968 which served the states of Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. Its primary connections included Boston and New York.
Expansion and Acquisition
The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad was formed 24 July 1872 through the consolidation of the New York and New Haven Railroad and Hartford and New Haven Railroad. It owned a main line from New York City to Springfield, Massachusetts via New Haven and Hartford, Connecticut, and leased other lines, including the Shore Line Railway to New London. The company went on to lease more lines and systems, eventually forming a virtual monopoly in New England south of the Boston and Albany Railroad.
The first line of the original system to open was the Hartford and New Haven Railroad, opened from Hartford to New Haven, with steamship connections to New York in 1839, and to Springfield, with rail connections to Worcester and Boston, in 1844. The New York and New Haven came later, as it ran parallel to the Long Island Sound coast and required many bridges over rivers. It opened in 1848, using trackage rights over the New York and Harlem Railroad (later part of the New York Central Railroad system) from Woodlawn south to New York. From 1912 Grand Central Terminal served as the New Haven's New York City terminal.
Into the Twentieth Century
Around the turn of the century, New York investors led by J. P. Morgan gained control, and in 1903 installed Charles S. Mellen as President.[1] Morgan and Mellen achieved a complete monopoly of transportation in southern New England, purchasing other railroads and steamship and trolley lines. More than 100 independent railroads eventually became part of the system before and during these years, reaching 2,131 miles at its 1929 peak. Substantial improvements to the system were made during the Mellen years, including electrification between New York and New Haven. Morgan and Mellen went further and attempted to acquire or neutralize competition from other railroads in New England, including the New York Central's Boston and Albany Railroad, the Rutland Railroad, the Maine Central Railroad, and the Boston and Maine Railroad. But the Morgan-Mellen expansion left the company overextended and financially weak.
In 1914, 21 directors and ex-directors of the railroad were indicted for "conspiracy to monopolize interstate commerce by acquiring the control of practically all the transportation facilities of New England."
Financial difficulties
Under the stress of the Great Depression the company slipped into bankruptcy in 1935, remaining in trusteeship until 1947. Common stock was voided and creditors assumed control...
In 1959, the New Haven discontinued passenger service on the Old Colony Railroad network in southeastern Massachusetts. Despite this and other cutbacks, the New Haven once again went into bankruptcy on July 2, 1961...
Merger with Penn Central (1969-1976)
At the insistence of the Interstate Commerce Commission, the New Haven was merged into Penn Central on December 31, 1968, ending rail operations by the corporation. Penn Central was bankrupt by 1970 and the New Haven corporate entity remained in existence throughout the 1970s as the Trustee of the Estate pursued just payment from Penn Central for the New Haven's assets...
The Conrail Era and Beyond (1976-Present)
Freight operations on former New Haven lines passed to Conrail with its government-overseen creation on April 1, 1976. During the subsequent 23 years, Conrail withdrew from much of that territory, abandoning some track and handing other lines over to the Providence & Worcester, Bay Colony, Boston & Maine, Connecticut Central, Pioneer Valley, Housatonic, and Connecticut Southern railroads. Those lines still operated by Conrail in 1999 became part of CSX Transportation as the result of yet another merger...
