Marsh Rabbit: Sylvilagus palustris. The Florida Marsh Rabbit only found in the swamps and marshes of the coastal southeast United States and Florida. Rare to see these rabbits grazing with giant Wood Storks (which might well eat young rabbits) these adult Marsh Rabbits are smaller and darker than their cottontail cousins with a small brownish tail and shorter hair and ears. They are excellent swimmers but are often eaten by alligators. Marsh Rabbit: Sylvilagus palustris Appearance: The marsh rabbit is a slightly smaller, darker version of the more familiar eastern cottontail rabbit, which is best known for its conspicuous cotton puff tail. In contrast, the marsh rabbit has a small gray-brown tail. Habitat: The marsh rabbit is found throughout Florida. It is distinguished from its cottontail cousin in another important way — it is a strong swimmer and is usually found close to water. In Florida, this habitat includes everything from fresh and brackish marshes to wet prairies and flooded agricultural fields. Behavior: Marsh rabbits eat a variety of plants found in and around wetlands. They are most active at night, dusk and dawn, the same time many of the marsh rabbit's predators — owls, foxes, bobcats and alligators — are active as well. Breeding occurs year-round but peaks December through June. On average, a female marsh rabbit produces six or seven litters of two to four young per litter each year. The nests are lined with grass and breast fur and are located on the ground in thickets, stumps or logs. By four weeks of age, the young rabbits are weaned and are foraging for themselves. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the City of Arcata's innovative wastewater treatment facility. By integrating its conventional wastewater treatment with the natural treatment processes of constructed wetlands Arcata has succeeded in turning its treated wastewater into a resource. The sanctuary includes 307 acres of freshwater marshes, salt marsh with tidal slough, grassy uplands, tidal mudflats, brackish marsh, 5.4 miles of walking and biking paths and an Interpretive Center that serve over 150.000 visitors every year. Located at the north end of Humboldt Bay, the sanctuary is situated along the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory route for thousands of birds that breed in the far north and winter in California, Mexico, and Central and South America. These wetlands provide homes and migratory resting places for over 270 species of birds. Although birding is good year round, it's best from mid-July to early May. Songbirds are abundant from spring through fall. A variety of raptors reside or visit here seasonally. From October through April, look for waterfowl, shorebirds and wading birds. Numerous species of plants, mammals, insects, and amphibians inhabit the marsh, including Raccoons, River Otters, Gray Foxes, Bobcats, Pacific Tree Frogs, Red-legged Frogs, Rough-skinned Newts & Dragonflies. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary has received international recognition and numerous awards as a municipal planning design, a cost-effective public utility operation, an urban redevelopment plan, and a natural resource project.

The area is of international importance for migratory, overwintering and breeding wetland birds. Suitable habitat is achieved through manipulation of water levels and livestock grazing. The reserve supports an exciting and diverse range of birds. Among breeding species found here are avocet, redshank, snipe, lapwing, water rail, bearded reedling, common tern and garganey. Red fiddler crabs burrows on the mudflat to protect and defend themself from aquatic predators. Red fiddler crabs are mainly found along sea beaches, brackish inter-tidal mud flat, in mangroves, in salt marshes, and on sandy or muddy beaches. A fiddler crab, sometimes known as a calling crab, may be any of approximately 100 species of semi-terrestrial marine crabs which make up the genus Uca. As members of the family Ocypodidae, fiddler crabs are most closely related to the ghost crabs of the genus Ocypode. This entire group is composed of small crabs -- the largest being slightly over two inches across. Fiddler crabs are found along sea beaches and brackish inter-tidal mud flats, lagoons and swamps. Fiddler crabs are most well known for their sexually dimorphic claws; the males' major claw is much larger than the minor claw while the females' claws are both the same size. Like all crabs, fiddler crabs shed their shells as they grow. If they have lost legs or claws during their present growth cycle, a new one will be present when they molt. If the large fiddle claw is lost, males will develop one on the opposite side after their next molt. Newly molted crabs are very vulnerable because of their soft shells. They are reclusive and hide until the new shell hardens. Henry Island is an island near Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas, India. It is approximately 130 km (81 mi) from Kolkata. Henry Island is named after a European adventurer who surveyed land in the area in the late 19th Century. The area was covered in dense mangrove forest parted by numerous canals. Nobody other to pry other than the red fiddler crabs dotting the shore. October 2013. It was a very grey day. I spoke with some friends at Pack & Paddle in Lafayette,LA that morning. They all suggested that I skip fresh water fishing the Atchafalaya Basin for a brackish marsh adventure in Cypremort Point, LA. I had a little luck that afternoon. Atleast I caught enough fish to feed myself a couple of days straight. I fish from a 14ft pirogue. Most people look at me funny from their huge bass boats. But, truth is I have just as much success in my little wooden pirogue. It's much easier to silently creep up on the fish. I hope yawl enjoy the pictures!
