Runners asked to turn off tunes for NYC Marathon
USA Track and Field says wearing a portable audio player, like an iPod, in a race like the New York City Marathon, could get you disqualified. (Nov. 2) 2007

Sometimes you need a little push from Kanye West or the Rolling Stones to get you from Mile 23 to the finish line.
But USA Track and Field says no more. Wear a portable audio player, like an iPod, in a race like the New York City Marathon, and you could be disqualified.
The rule, described as a safety measure, caught some runners by surprise as they showed up in New York to pick up their numbers for this weekend's marathon.
SOT SOLOMON BAE, marathoner, 11:05 ``I came here without knowing the fact that you cannot wear the headphones for the race. I didn't know until someone just asked me about it. Q: So are you going to wear them? A: I think I will.''
Most runners tell us they train with music, but leave it home on race day. But it's hard to find someone who thinks this is a good idea.
SOT JARED GRUST, marathoner, 2:10 ``I think they say it's for safety reasons, but I've never understood what those safety reasons actually meant.''
SOT BETTY DEGRAFF, marathoner, 1:30 ``Some people need the music...The rule is ridiculous.''
And there will be rulebreakers -- or potential rulebreakers -- in Sunday's marathon field.
SOT BECKY BURNS, marathoner, 4:20 ``I'll have 'em on on Sunday. I don't want to get stuck at mile 20 and freak out and not be able to turn my music on, so I'll be brinign it with me.''
Rest assured, Becky. With 38-thousand runners on the course, the race director says enforcing the rule would be a logistical nightmare.
STANDUP WARREN LEVINSON, The Associated Press 15:20 ``Oh. Are we on? Sorry. (removes earphone) The people who run the marathon say they won't be taking buds away headsets from runners. But their advice to people who want to listen to music sounds very Zen: Be here now.
SOT MARY WITTENBERG, RACE DIRECTOR, NEW YORK CITY MARATHON 2:45 ``It's part of the experience to get out there and feel what's going on, to listen to other runners. Hey! We've had people meet their future wives and husbands in the race. What happens if your headphones are on? You're going to miss that opportunity.''
The elite runners don't use music. But for the rest of us, who need a blast of Justin Timberlake or Fergie to get over the hump, race directors are still looking the other way. For now.

Paelata Helu: USA track and field's next superstar
12-year-old Paelata Helu of Tucson, Arizona has captured numerous state championships, regional championships and even a couple national titles on the USA Track...
12-year-old Paelata Helu of Tucson, Arizona has captured numerous state championships, regional championships and even a couple national titles on the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics tour. As she continues to improve, her sights are set on the Olympic Games.
“We’re kind of known in the community as the Helu Tribe,” said Soma Helu, the father of the tribe. "There isn’t a weekend we get out to just enjoy ourselves. We’re either training, at a track meet or some sporting event.”
Soma Helu and his family are always on the run. This weekend the journey continues with a trip to Texas for yet another track and field meet, this one for 12-year-old Paelata, who fell in love with the sport by idolizing its stars.
“When I would watch the Olympic games on television I used to watch Allyson Felix and Sonya Richards-Ross,” she said. “They never quit. Whether they got first or not they just kept going.”
Nearly four years ago, the Helus signed Paelata on to POPS Track Club, headed by former Olympian Latanya Sheffield. With her guidance and Paelata’s natural ability, it didn’t take long to see the potential.
“It was her first track meet and right out of the gate her first 100m she won it and placed first out of over 100 girls,” said Soma.
“It was my first meet and my first event was the 100m,” said Paelata, “that’s when I first got first place. It was amazing. It was a good feeling.”
The top of the podium has become routine for Lata. An Arizona state champion and record holder, a national champion and record holder, she works tirelessly to improve her craft.
“Working out of the blocks, the corners and also the long jump,” said Soma. “She does that maybe two to three times per week.”
“I come out here with a mindset that I have a workout that’s probably going to push her. Then midway through the workout, she’s dominating it,” he said. “I’ll have to modify it just to give her that extra push.”
It’s that vigorous approach to training that paves the way for success in competition, even when surrounded by hundreds of the state, region or even nation’s top athletes.
“At first it’s really frightening but I get used to it,” Lata said.
“She will tell us, she has the maturity to tell us what she wants to do and improve on,” said Soma. “Looking at it, she actually has better marks in different events but she wants to work on her weaknesses. That’s something that’s very mature at an early age.”
Which brings us back to this weekend. Lata is competing on the campus of UTEP in El Paso, raising the bar once again.
“I want to try and get my own personal records or some national records for the long jump or 4x400m relay,” she said.
It’s worth noting Lata and her long relay teammates, who hail from Mesa, rarely practice the event. The talent pool is so strong they can show up at a meet and dominate. And not just the girls.
“We have fun all the way through it and try to stick with the boys. Eventually we pass them up,” she laughed.
What started with an 8-year-old watching her heroes on television has turned into a personal pilgrimage to reach track and field’s highest levels.
“I hope to get through and try to make it to the junior Olympics and then someday off to the Olympics,” Lata said.
“She came to me in December of 2011 and said, ‘dad I want to run track.’ That’s what she said she wanted for Christmas,” recalled Soma. “The rest was history. Obviously you want your kids to succeed but she’s making it easy because she wants to do it. Sometimes we have to pull back and just let her be a kid."

Bruce Jenner: Track and Field Sports Documentary
Sports Documentary on legendary decathlete Bruce Jenner.
William Bruce Jenner (born October 28, 1949) is a former U.S. track and field athlete, motivational speaker, socialite, television personality and businessman. He won the gold medal for decathlon in the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics.
Following his Olympic win and the related recognition, he married Kris Kardashian, and his professional career evolved into being a television celebrity. By 1981, he had starred in several made-for-TV movies and was Erik Estrada's replacement on the top rated TV series CHiPs. He has six children: Burt, Casey, Brandon, Brody, Kendall and Kylie. Since his 1991 marriage to Kris Jenner, he is the stepfather to Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Rob Kardashian. Since 2007, he has appeared with his blended family on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Jenner was born in Mount Kisco, New York, the son of Esther R. and William Hugh Jenner. He attended Newtown High School in Newtown, Connecticut, after spending a year at Sleepy Hollow High School in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Jenner earned a football scholarship and attended Graceland College (now Graceland University) in Iowa, but a knee injury forced him to stop playing football and he switched to the decathlon. He was mentored by Graceland's track coach L. D. Weldon, who was the first to recognize Jenner's potential and encouraged him to pursue the decathlon. Jenner debuted in the decathlon at the Drake Relays in 1970, placing fifth.
Jenner placed third in the decathlon at the 1972 U.S. Olympic trials and finished in tenth place at the 1972 Munich games. His success prompted him to devote himself to an intense training regimen, while also selling insurance outside training hours. He acknowledged that he was supported and subsidized by his then wife, Chrystie Crownover, who worked as an airline stewardess. In the era before professionalism was allowed in athletics this kind of training was unheard of. During that period he spent eight hours a day at the San Jose City College track. Centered around Bert Bonanno, the coach at SJCC, San Jose at the time was a hotbed for training aspiring Olympic athletes, including Jenner, along with Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips, John Powell, Mac Wilkins, Al Feuerbach and others. In 1974 and 1976, Jenner was the American champion in the event.
At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, he won the gold medal in the Decathlon, setting the world record of 8,616 points. The world record was broken by just 4 points by Daley Thompson in 1980. In 1985, the IAAF Decathlon scoring table was changed, so Jenner's winning score has been reevaluated against that table and reported as 8634 for comparative purposes. As of 2011, Jenner is #25 on the world all-time list and the #9 American.
As a result of winning the Olympic decathlon, Jenner was a national hero. He was the 1976 recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. Jenner was also the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year in 1976. He was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1980. He was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
San Jose City College hosted the "Bruce Jenner Invitational" (frequently shortened to "Jenner") as a televised, annual stop on the United States Track and Field Circuit (a meet equivalent in stature to the Prefontaine Classic) for the better part of two decades. Records were set at the meet, with Jenner frequently hosting the telecasts.

Mr. John Carlos is a medaled USA Track and Field Hall of Fame athlete and Olympian. Competing in the 200 meters, Carlos earned the Gold in the 1967 Pan American Games, and the Bronze in the 1968 Olympics. A record setter, Dr. Carlos led San Jose State to its first NCAA championship in 1969 with victories in the 100 and 220, and as a member of the 4×110-yard relay. He also set indoor world bests in the 60-yard dash and 220-yard dash at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Mr. Carlos made world history during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico, when he took to the international stage during the medal ceremony and made a speechless statement, heard and seen worldwide. Winning the 200 meter, John Carlos accepted the Bronze medal at the Olympic podium wearing black socks and no shoes to represent impoverished people who had no shoes of their own, and raised a black-gloved fist crowning a bowed head to humbly reflect the strength of the human spirit. Carlos was joined in his statement by teammate and gold medalist Tommie Smith, and both were supported by silver medalist, Australian, Peter Norman who wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. Headlines were made around the globe and the photograph of the three medalists standing peaceably in protest at the ceremonial podium instantaneously became a historical symbol of the fight for human rights. International Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage immediately ordered Smith and Carlos suspended from the U.S. team and banned them from the Olympic Village. No penalties or repercussions were enforced on the Australian, Peter Norman by the IOC.
Following the controversial 1968 Olympic medal ceremony, all three athletes suffered lingering effects of their gesture, the most serious of which were death threats against Carlos, Smith, and their families. Contrary to reports, Carlos and Smith were not stripped of their medals. Carlos drew upon the founding principle of all athletes, perseverance and personal strength, as he strode forward through his career and in his pursuit to make a difference for the future of all people. Carlos went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League, the Canadian Football League, worked with Puma, the United States Olympic Committee, the Organizing Committee of the 1984 Summer Olympics, and the City of Los Angeles. Since 1985, Dr. Carlos has been a counselor, in-school suspension supervisor, and the track and field coach at Palm Springs High School in California.
Continuing his life-long mission to improve human rights conditions and to increase chances for the successes of our youth, Mr. Carlos is actively involved with global and community movements. In April of 2008, he once again took to the international stage and was a torch-bearer for the Human Rights Torch, which ran in parallel to the 2008 Summer Olympics torch relay, and focused attention on China’s human rights record. In July of the same year, Dr. Carlos accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage for his salute at the 2008 Espy Awards.
